This black skirt suit has been a difficult item to style. When I bought it in 2015 I was in awe because it reminded me of the New Look by Dior in the fifties. But…. (yes there is a but) … there is a whole lot of black going on. I did find out that some bare leg showing (pumps) looked better than boots. You can see the skirt with boots here and with red pumps here. Both outfits were sort of all right but not the kind of outfit you feel terrific in.
And I had bought the skirt together with a jacket in the same colour and material (at the Max Mara outlet ?). I love suits. They give me a rich feeling. As the jacket was nicely fitted, it also gave me a waist (bonus). How to style this suit?
My solution was colour blocking. A yellow jumper and some fuchsia accessories. To give it some pizzazz. Ron found a bright yellow gate, so off we went on a glorious sunny winter day.
Below: “Eeehhh, the wind makes this skirt look strange…..”
Below: better laugh about the wind, although not that funny.
Below: no really ….not that funny…
Below: oh yes, the hands… what to do with the hands. Well, I have a pocket, I can hang my finger in the pocket. OH MY GOODNESS, this is a bad pose.
Below: details my dears, details…. the bag by Picard. You have seen it once before here.
Below: the little belt… See how important it is to make sure the belt is UNDERNEATH the button? And not above, creating a belly?
Below: the earrings, bought in Paris at Cécile Jeanne, seen before here. If you would compare the earrings below with the ones in the Paris post (I know you won’t), you might notice that the gold piece on the earlobe is different. My earlobes are very thin and the little holes are located very low. The original earlobe piece had a pin positioned in such a way (low), it looked as if the earrings were hanging by a thread of earlobe. Eerie! So I broke off the top bits and replaced them with a gold stud earring. That’s better.
Below: I wasn’t so sure about the fuchsia belt anymore. Was it creating strange proportions? Short upper body, far too long lower body? We decided to try the suit without the belt at another location with less wind. Although the proportions are right, it is more boring.
Below:Â again with the belt….
Now it is up to you to give me advice. What is better? What are my options?
- Without the belt but with a big modern brooch? Â (I am thinking about that.)
- Or replace the buttons with some colourful ones, breaking up the black?
- Or have the skirt shortened to knee height?
- Something I haven’t thought about yet?
Give me your thoughts please.
Below: Â just in case you haven’t looked at the other ways I styled this skirt, here is a reminder. I only like the left one with the cropped top.
Greetje
When I openend your blog I thought wow what a great photo, and I adore the suit. It is so chique. Maxima eat your heart out. I like it with the belt , otherwise it is a lot of black from top to bottom. The material is very elegant and looks expensive. I like the touch of fuchsia too. The combination with the cropped top is nice and sportive , but I would wear another colour boots.
I wore the cream boots to bookend the colour of the top. If you would wear another colour boots, what would you wear then?
And I don’t think Maxima has anything to worry about, but it is sweet of you. Thanks.
Greetje I absolutely love the whole look with the belt… It gives it that certain something the outfit was missing, plus it creates the perfect thirds (making legs look longer is NEVER a bad thing in my book)!
However, it really doesn’t matter what I or anyone else thinks – only you can decide what you like the best. You’ll always get conflicting opinions so go with what your gut tells you when you see the pictures. Personally I love the skirt long, but that’s because I like long skirts. Someone else will like short skirts. Doesn’t mean either of us is right, it’s all subjective.
Do what YOU feel is right!!

I know Catherine, sometimes I get opinions and you can see nobody likes this or everybody likes that. But usually, as you say, opinions differ very much. All these opinions and advice do give me ideas though which is really nice. Thanks for dropping by and for the compliments. Much appreciated.
It’s not your most contemporary look, rather classic and a bit lady-like (as in:mevrouw-ig). But having said that: it looks good in it’s sort and it looks good and elegant on you.
*Don’t shorten it, as you indeed very well might ruin it. It’s a certain look as it is and it’s a good look.
*Wearing it with a bright-colored small belt as you did here works wonders.
*If you don’t wear it with a belt, then a colourful, big, funky brooch will be much needed.
*Smashing pumps are better than black ones.
*Not sure about ankle boots and highly doubt that wider ankle boots will work under this skirt.
*How about a hot pink top under it and a bright yellow belt?
*The styling you did for this post beats all the other stylings you did with this skirt.
Great exercise, to ask for feedback and start playing with the suggestions.
Guess you have to build a floor on top of your house after all. That would be your walk-in floor (not closet) and you would have easy access to all your clothes and be able to put them back equally easily;-).
I think you sum it up rather nicely. I am looking for a big brooch. Found one but that one is rather expensive. Nevertheless a piece of art will look at it again end of March. Switching the yellow top for bright punk and the pink belt for yellow is not going to make a difference I think. And I agree about the ankle boots (tried it). And I think it will be much cheaper to give away a lot of clothes and buy new ones than having another floor put on our house haha.
Looks like you’ve had lots of great suggestions, so I may be repeating something someone else said, but, here are my thoughts. I like the pop of colour the belt provides, but I think it breaks up the elegant line of the suit; perhaps a big modern brooch would be better, or alternatively, a wider belt? I agree that you need the expanse of bare leg with pumps is much better than boots, so what about a pair of bright coloured pumps? A coloured scarf, or a pair of hot pink, turquoise, red, etc. long gloves would add some punch as well.
It does look wonderful against the background of the yellow gate – Yay Ron!
I think you are right and I need to incorporate the pop of colour in a different way than adding this belt. The big modern brooch has been on my mind as well. Thanks for the input.
Lovely suit and lovely photo’s. You could wear it more often by dressing it down a bit with kinky boots etc.
Kinky boots hah? Hmmm don’t think I have any. I tried ankle boots but didn’t like it. High boots could be a possibility but then in silver for instance (haven’t got them, but I agree with your assessment). Red patent leather pumps is the best I have come up with so far.
I forgot…in my opinion you should not shorten the skirt, probably it is the perfect one for the shape …
Yes I thnk you are right. I would probably ruin it.
Keep the pink belt and maybe add funky shoes and a neckerchief? It’s a lovely formal suit and I like the textured fabric. Ron has excelled himself with the location!
Thanks for your advice Fiona. Funky shoes would indeed change the look completely. Alas.. I don’t have any. But.. there will always be a next year and I can be on the look out. Oh I just remembered I have those grey bulky shoes.. Hmmm not sure. A bright colour would be better right? I have red patent leather pumps. Not funky in form but in texture and colour?
And I am leaning towards a large modern brooch more than a scarf or neckerchief. As I still have 1970 memories of those things. We all have hangups.
Golly such a lot of replies with so many suggestions – you’ve got a whole lot of trying on to do here now! I’ll throw my little bit in too, just in case…
I’m not a fan of black, but do have quite a few black pieces waiting in my wardrobe for the perfect moment. That said, this is a beautiful suit, albeit quite formal. You’ve got such a playful streak, you somehow look too restrained in some of the shots. The colour blocking works perfectly with yellow and cerise popping against the black. I personally, feel that the boring black pumps are to blame for it being a tad unadventurous. Keep the pink belt (sorry Sylvia) too, but find some shoes that say fun – maybe in one of the other colours or black and white, a bit quirky in style perhaps. The length of the skirt is in keeping with the shape of the suit so, no don’t shorten it. Last of all, I would have added a statement necklace – my chunky pearl one would be perfect!
Despite all of the constructive criticism from the masses, this is a great photo shoot (well done Ron with the yellow gates) and you do look utterly elegant Greetje.

ps Have you seen my struggle with the black piece we had to style for this month’s Ping Pong Post – aaaarh!
Thank you for your input Anna, much appreciated. And yes I have to try a lot. Not looking forward to that but I am determined to improve this look.
Statement necklaces, I fear, will only draw the eye upwards and not do anything for the proportions. Pearls, although fun, will take away a colour and perhaps veer the outfit towards classic again? But the shoes definitely need adjusting. Lots of comments on that. And I will head over to your blog to see you struggling haha.
For some indefinable reason I find it difficult to find a comfortable combination for my long, black skirt too. I like how you matched yours to yellow and the thin belt. Keep on looking for many different combinations and … let me know, please! 🙂 I will try the skirt with my derby shoes…they seem to work well with long skirts…if I find something which is OK I will post It!!
Oh please do. Isn’t strange how this proves to be difficult? When I tried it on in the outlet I thought it was magnificent. Just needed a lime shirt, which I had just bought. I will let you know too if I have fond a better solution.
I wouldn’t shorten that skirt for the world. It really is very New Look, and it highlights your loooong legs. The shape, the drape — perfect. I especially like it with the (surprising) leather top, but with the yellow sweater it’s sheer elegance. Then it has a whole new life with the cropped top. Worn as a suit it needed that belt, and looks lovely. Have you tried it with a cropped (maybe Chanel-cut) jacket and wide belt with a big buckle?
Thanks for the advice. I have thought many times about a cropped jacket, but never found one. I have a red leather jacket I thought I could use for this purpose, but it is too long, not cropped.
We’ll see what I can come up with.
It’s very 50’s Greetje, and a great fit on your enviable figure.
If it was mine I wouldn’t shorten it (and you have even more of the height to make this midi length work).
A corset style belt would look very modern…plus chunky heeled shoes/boots.
Court shoes definitely add to the 50’s feel.
I am loving the pop of yellow underneath with you pink lippy!:o)
The suit looks like a great quality item that fits perfectly, have fun styling it.

Samantha
Thank you for all the tips and ideas. I am going to try everything or almost everything but having fun with that?? Hmm, not sure. Funnily enough I find that quite hard work haha.
You are funny Greetje! The “fun” part is the easy bit for me…the looking pulled together part is the hardest. :o)
It is putting all those clothes and shoes etc. back in the closet which I dread…
I love this look, I’m sure you can already imagine it. I like this slightly vintage style, which fits into the most classic and elegant trend of a fashion era that I admire. I like the pattern and cut of the two garments, and I like to see the look with shoes. And I have to recognize that your additions, in the form of color complements, give character to the outfit and improve it. You are a very elegant woman and with a lot of class and style, today you show it with more.
If you were my only follower, I would still continue this blog. Just to read your comments. Big hug.
Yes to black and pink, no to yellow with black.
Perhaps silver sneakers will give a 2017-look to the outfit?
Ah, I beg to differ with you. Nothing wrong in my book with yellow and black. Silver sneakersr silver pumps sound like a good idea. I also have silver/gold ankle boots.
yes, the length is current, but if you are uncomfortable then who cares what is hot? Get someone to pin it up the length you are comfortable with & take a couple of pictures to see if you like the proportions. I like the idea of brooches or a statement necklace. You could repeat the color of either with your shoes.
Thanks Mieke. I will most certainly do so. I might add a lot of brooches and not only on the jacket but going further down on the skirt.
I see that you have a ton of suggestions on this….so here’s my two cents.
Yes, yes and yes again on the belt. It’s absolutely fabulous! I think especially because the skirt is so voluminous, that the belt adds that waist line so well!
I am a crazy color girl (nothing new in that statement) so I do love this skirt with the red shoes. Or maybe even other colors? I know I go overboard at times, but sometimes the black skirt with black shoes seems so …..old? Especially since you said color blocking. To me color blocking is one of those great things where you can add in many colors and not look strange!!
jodie
http://www.jtouchofstyle.com
You don’t go overboard… never. An you are probably right in “black skirt, black shos”, I can do better. And I am going to try everything. The thing is, I haven’t got many high heeled winter shoes in a colour. I have lovely patent leather red ones but they are not high enough for this skirt.
But—-how about flats?? I know, I know—we always think heels with this length of skirt. But seriously—check out my post today. I wore sneakers with my midi skirt, and I really like how it turned out (I wasn’t too sure in the mirror, but I thought the photos weren’t bad!).
OK, OK because it looks so good on you, I will try flats. Do you know how much I do NOT like flats? ?
I like it with and without the belt. Ha! Lots of help I am, right? ; )
I do think a big brooch or a big fake flower on the lapel would liven it up if you choose to wear it without the belt. What about a grouping of 3 brooches? That is always unique.
Also switching out the shoes for another pop of colour could be fun as someone else suggested.
bisous
Suzanne
I agree that the black shoes might need re-thinking. If this were in my closet, I might try it with leopard shoes or black and white spectators (pumps or sling-backs, either one).
I am old fashioned, I would not wear slingbacks in winter. I have leopard shoes but the heel on them is rather low and you really need quite a heel with this skirt. Well to my taste. But I will rethink the black shoes.
I am going to try it all. Grouping of 3 brooches I did with a pencil skirt suit. Totally forgot that. Thanks. I am afraid that flowers, even though fake or big, will enhance the 1950 vibe and I want to take it into 2017. I have a couple of your flowers. I might try to group them, see how that is.
WOW!!! What a gorgeous backdrop for these photos! ! The hits just keep on coming for your man Ron!!
I also like the suit with and without the belt. It would be fun to shop for a fun brooch that has yellow, pink and maybe a few other fun colors too!! A family crest type pin could be cool…
I also think you should wear or bring the jacket and find a black skirt in the shorter length your toying with to try on with the rest of the outfit… Or perhaps just do some taping/ pinning and squint your eyes for the basic “feel” of that shorter length.
I also think a bright,( plaid ?) silky scarf, tied to your bag might be fun. You could tie it around a sexy black hat (brim) too, or choker style at the neck…
OK I’m stopping now. =-)
All suggestions are good and I will certainly try them. I am most drawn to pinning the skirt to a shorter length, alhough Yvonne says this length is the new hot length. Trust me to have something hot and new and then bringing it back to the style of 5 years ago. I am not a trend setter, that is for sure. And again I will pass the compliment on to Ron. I love how he scouts these backgrounds everywhere.
What if you wear the jacket open with a black and white blouse and a touch off pink in it. Or, more fashion 2017, with a longer blouse in any colour you like so the colour pops out under the jacket. By the way..love that bag!
I love the fact I can wear this suit with the jacket closed. It gives me a waist, which totally disappears when I wear the jacket open. It even becomes a big square black block. So that is no option. A longer blouse peeping from under the jacket.. hmm risky when I wear the jacket closed. But closed is not what you meant.
The bag is indeed an instant pop of colour.
With the belt, definitely! I’d love to see how it looks with a brooch. I’m also thinking maybe different shoes…with some color or pattern maybe? Leopard? 😉 The suit fits you beautifully.
Aahh leopard, that might work. I also have snake high heels. I chose the plain black ones because black ones with a tassle were already too much. But haven’t tried any other shoe wear. Thanks Susan.
I think it looks fabulous with the pink narrow belt you’re wearing. I agree that it is a big boring with nothing to perk it up. I love the idea of a huge colourful brooch. If I were wearing it, I’d fill up that space where you’re wearing a yellow top with a huge layered statement necklace, and wear a shoe or bag or belt to clash or match, as you feel like.
It is such a versatile suit, and I love all the other ways you’ve worn the skirt. I wouldn’t change the buttons because that can be a bit limiting, and would distract from a statement necklace 🙂
I didn’t choose a statement necklace because the V of the jacket is quite deep. And so are the wrinkles in my skin. For that reason I keep that bit covered up. Of course I could use a statement necklace so bold (like yours) that you don’t see any skin (or wrinkles), but I am afraid it will not help with the proportions (everything going on at the top and then a big black area with nothing at the bottom). What bugs me most about this suit are the proportions.
I didn’t change the buttons yet because of the same fear of limitations. On the other hand, I don’t wear this jacket often without the skirt. Difficult, difficult.
The suit is wonderful. However, it is a little long since you have such great legs you could shorten it a little. Have you tried it with a wider belt? Not too wide though and as someone suggested maybe with different shoes. If you match the shoes with the belt it will give it some more color.
Yes I did try it with several belts, but it is mainly the proportions I am worried about. So I will see (using pins) if the skirt is better when it is shorter. Thanks for the advice.
Wider Belt. Red? Or no belt. I’d also like to see your hair pulled back with bangs out. Black & White Zebra Print Shoes. The fit is flawless :). No Blouse. Optional either Gold or Silver toned large necklace.
I like that suggestion: black & white zebra print shoes. Haven’t got them, but that can be fixed haha.
You will never see me with my hair pulled back. I need all the volume I can get around my tiny head.
Definitely like it best with the belt!!! You could also try a wider black belt and gold buttons on the jacket???
The length of the skirt is perfect – don’t worry, it’s the new hot length! Yellow is also very cool – love the backdrop of these photos too.
Have a great Sunday!
xx Yvonne
http://www.funkyforty.com
Thanks for taking the time to advice Yvonne. It might take some time for me to get used to the new hot length (it often takes quite a bit of time before I am on board haha).
Oh you always look pretty on board to me 😉
Have a fabulous start to the week Greetje!
Love the suit and the styling with the pink belt. I think a great brooch would be a nice addition although I do like it as is. Regarding your earlier suit photos, my preference is for the one with the grey leather jacket. I agree with you about suits, they look so polished and elegant to my eye. Glad they are back. By the way, the photo scene with the bright yellow gate is perfect!
The bright yellow gate is Ron’s idea (again). I have a lot to thank that man. I am going to look for a great brooch. I have one yellow/red/black but I use that on every outfit that needs a bit of oomph.
It’s a lovely suit and looks very contemporary with the yellow and pink. It would look wonderful with gloves and a hat!
Ooohh I am afraid that with gloves and a hat it would look like 1950. And I want to style it 2017. The yellow and pink were good contemporary additions, I agree with that. But I am still hesitating about the length of the skirt etc.
In the very first picture, where you lean on the yellow railing, the outfit is absolutely perfect as is! In some of the other pictures, though, I might change the shoes. I might also try it with a white blouse + black/white spectators.
At first glance, I thought the skirt was a bit too long. After further looking, though, I think it’s the right length as is.
I like it with the belt. I would like it without the belt if you added a brooch or bigger earrings or a blouse with more presence.
I look forward to your posts each Sunday. They’re a most enjoyable part of my day.
Well thank you Riley!! Not only do you give sound advice but a lovely compliment too. That pleases me no end. I will certainly keep these posts coming every Sunday.
A white blouse with a black jacket is very dangerous for me. I sometimes do it, but this colour combination near my face is not very good with my complexion. But your suggestion to try the suit without the belt but with a big brooch might be a very good thought. I will try it. Now I have to find the brooch. Etsy… here I come.
I think the skirt shorter would be more interesting. And I would wear it with a blouse and a uh stropdas, sorry couldn’t come up with an English word for it.
The English word is tie. That is a twist. I have a very colourful men’s tie. I will give it a try. A blouse I think, is not a good idea with me. Those collars always droop and hide underneath the lapels of the jacket.
Perhaps a tee with a tie! I personally loved wearing ties. Havn t done it for a long time now!
First off, I absolutely adore the first photo! The bright yellow gate, the pop of yellow and pink accents are just so brilliant! LOVE!
And your bucket bag is just like my pattern…I wonder if I can find myself some bright leather to work with?
You look elegant and classic in both versions shown. Suits worn as suits {both pieces together} are classic and you don’t need to mess with it, LOL.
Now…your questions. I’m not that good at this but I’ll add my two cents. I think the length of the skirt is good for you…those lovely long gams and all. I don’t think I would change the buttons either. You could try a brooch or a scarf to draw the attention up towards your face.
I think the sleeves scrunched give the suit a contemporary flair. I know you are short waisted but I would really love to see a wider, boldly coloured belt at the waist. Have you tried that? Too uncomfortable? I’d also love to see shoes in a bright pop of colour. Have you thought of something super fun like a colourful men’s bow tie with a white shirt?
Looking forward to reading suggestions and seeing what you play with!
Heh heh, why do you think it because the top photo (big grin). When I saw it, I knew at once it was going to be the star of the post.
You are right about the bucket bag. And I did love your bags too.
Thank you for your suggestions. A couple of them I will try and some of them I know aren’t me, like a white shirt. Black and white near my face is bad for me (although sometimes I cannot resist it).
A wider boldly coloured belt.. I haven’t tried them all, but I did try quite a few.
Another reader suggested short ankle boots. I am going to try that with no belt and a big colourful modern brooch (still to find) or with a couple of flower brooches by Suzanne. A scarf seems a good idea, only I usually wrestle with them. They often look as if they are going to strangle me, or it is extremely cold and I need the scarf for that or it droops down as if it is really sad.
In your previous post…the white shirt looks so great, but maybe because the blazer is a lighter shade of blue? In re-visiting that post I think the open neck is a good look for you and I am no longer in favour of trying a bow tie…but the more traditional men’s tie as Nancy suggests; yes, I would give it a go!
I am the same with scarves…a love/hate relationship. I find them difficult to style in a way that makes them effortlessly chic looking, LOL.
You’ll be playing in your closet for some time! 🙂
Will you come over and clear the mess up again? Hang everything nicely back in the closets? Pretty please?
I’m crazy for this suit!! You bought it for its classic style so I would let it speak on its own – just the suit, no belt. BUT to modernize I would have a wild, bold necklace that hangs just above the jacket opening, some crazy tights and colourful shoes. It’s an idea but I don’t know how it would look for real or if it would appeal to your aesthetic.
As for hands, you can try look partially away from the camera into the distance and hold one ear with your hand. I know, sounds stupid, but sometimes it looks great. Poses where you’re checking your watch are interesting too. Use your hands to tuck your hair. I have problems too so lately I try to just move around more. Heh. But rest assured, your photos are always stellar.
Aha, I haven’t heard that one yet: crazy tights. And I am so into crazy tights these days. How about diamonds in all colours? Good idea.
And thank you for the posing tips…. checking my watch! I can do that. Hold one ear…hmm Oh you said WITH your hand, not IN your hand haha. I had a Van Gogh moment here. Better put on my glasses. Tucking my hair is something I have used indeed. And it is usually a good photo when I walk up to the camera. Just not always room for that.
LOLOLOLOL
Oh yes, I totally agree that diamonds in ALL colours would be very appropriate! – but you might have a hard time getting your credit card out of the deep freeze again. Hahaha – I guarantee that if you held your ear in your hand your photos would be a HUUUGE hit, although not necessarily the way you want them to be. Hahaha.
lol, I just bought a book with 1000 poses. (photographing women: 1000 poses). That would give you both some inspiration. I should try it for myself. Perhaps do a different pose each day… A long way to go since there are 1000 haha. We could start a project!
That sounds like an awesome book! Hahaha. I can’t even imagine 1,000. There must be some good ones, not quite as good as the ear, but some good ones. Yes, a project!
Perhaps I can start by holding something different each time? A leg, my back? My head, an arm, the cat?
Love the classic black suit as is! The belt and purse are a nice pop of colour ….. colourful shoes maybe a nice idea too! Would love to see what else you would like to try!
I will try and photograph all my try-outs and publish them in a post. Don’t know whether that is doable, but it seems nice to let you all see how all the advice turns out.
Hi. I think without the belt looks best, sorry! Also maybe a chunky necklace and big cuff. I would style that length of skirt with short high heeled ankle boots. Love the skirt with the silver/grey jacket. The jacket is so easy to style with pants too. A great buy!
Oohh I haven’t tried short high heeled ankle boots. I have silver/golden ones with a wide shaft. Actually I don’t like the skirt with the leather jacket (it is green by the way, not easy to see). Perhaps because of the boots? Too much black at the bottom?
Perhaps those ankle boots, no belt and a great big brooch?
Yes! Would love to see how it looks with the ankle boots. Either big brooch or chunky necklace would look great.
Thanks for the advice. I have thought many times about a cropped jacket, but never found one. I have a red leather jacket I thought I could use for this purpose, but it is too long, not cropped.
We’ll see what I can come up with.
Lovely suit and lovely photo’s. You could wear it more often by dressing it down a bit with kinky boots etc.

Big hug.
yes, the length is current, but if you are uncomfortable then who cares what is hot?

It’s very 50’s Greetje, and a great fit on your enviable figure.
If it was mine I wouldn’t shorten it (and you have even more of the height to make this midi length work).
A corset style belt would look very modern…plus chunky heeled shoes/boots.
Court shoes definitely add to the 50’s feel.
I am loving the pop of yellow underneath with you pink lippy!:o)
The suit looks like a great quality item that fits perfectly, have fun styling it.

MaxMara never seems to go out of fashion. Always good for investment pieces. I have a coat from 2005 and it still looks good. Like the touches of bright pink to lift the black.
I have to say that I am not sure whether it is a suit by Max Mara itself or by one of their subbrands as I bought it in the outlet and they cut the labels out. But really, any brand of that family is good. The material of this suit is very good quality.
Thanks.
I’m definitely in the No belt camp. For me it ruins the look. There is enough shape already and it breaks the flow of the outfit. I would love to see a statement necklace or bracelet added and I would prefer a black and white (and yellow) or other printed or textured bag instead of the pink to tie the colors together. Love the yellow top with it. I would also add texture and color to the shoes. I think this is tough to style because as you say there is a lot of black and the skirt is quite long, but it still looks really good in that picture without the belt. And if I would get my way with the tips above, I think it would be perfect 🙂
Thank you very much Sylvia. Of course I am taking your advice very serious. But I can hear in your comment that you doubt whether I will follow it hahaha. Well … I won’t in one aspect. I don’t have a black and white (and yellow) bag so I won’t use that. I have the yellow one though but it is not a print. As suggested by others I could add that with a little scarf.

Your styling looks fine and I like the length. It look purposeful and fashionable. If you choose belted perhaps a little wider belt? For myself,I’d find a shoe that is meaner & sexier(ala rockstuds),or more color(like these too spendy Fendi http://www.neimanmarcus.com/Fendi-Fantasia-Floral-Beaded-Velvet-Sandal-Gray-Multi-Shoes/prod189590539_cat15150735__/p.prod?icid=&searchType=EndecaDrivenCat&rte=%252Fcategory.jsp%253FitemId%253Dcat15150735%2526pageSize%253
or go classic like Chanel’s beige/black slingbacks. Of course,if you want super 2017 stylin’,then some sort of mule or sneakers.(just not for me) Maybe consider tying a scarf or two(like those Dior twillies, not too big) on the handle of the bag. Adding low pattern would further break the sea of black that bugs you. So many options because the basic quality and architecture (both yours and the clothing) is there.
You are very kind. Thanks for the compliments! That last sentence was really sweet. I am going to try all options and see what it brings.

A big YES to the belt from me! I think all this black really needs it to break it up and accentuate your waist, Greetje. I love the pops of pink against the yellow too (excellent backdrop, good job on the photos, Ron). Don’t shorten the skirt! I love this length, and it does hearken back to the Dior “new look” style. I had a skirt just like this, and loved it and wore it for many years – it always looks best with a nice ladylike pump to me. Lovely suit!
Thanks Sheila. I am going to try (nearly) all tips an see. The proportions are worrying me most. But perhaps my eyes just have to get used to this new length.
The ear jokes are killing me! You are such a kindred spirit.
Thank you. Anything to make you laugh. Hope I can make you laugh for many years to come.
I love the length of the skirt. I’m afraid that if you hem it, it will completely change the shape. I’m not a fan of belts over jackets. I would go for bold pointy shoes or patterned tights. That skirt with the yellow sweater and red shoes is my favourite, so classy.
The yellow sweater looks good in this photo but was rather wide and kept creeping out of the skirt. Perhaps that is why I don’t like that outfit. Thanks for your advice, I will try everything.
I like it with and without the belt. Ha! Lots of help I am, right? ; )
I do think a big brooch or a big fake flower on the lapel would liven it up if you choose to wear it without the belt. What about a grouping of 3 brooches? That is always unique.
Also switching out the shoes for another pop of colour could be fun as someone else suggested.
bisous
Suzanne
I am going to try it all. Grouping of 3 brooches I did with a pencil skirt suit. Totally forgot that. Thanks. I am afraid that flowers, even though fake or big, will enhance the 1950 vibe and I want to take it into 2017. I have a couple of your flowers. I might try to group them, see how that is.
Wider Belt. Red?
Definitely like it best with the belt!!! You could also try a wider black belt and gold buttons on the jacket???
The length of the skirt is perfect – don’t worry, it’s the new hot length! Yellow is also very cool – love the backdrop of these photos too.
Have a great Sunday!
xx Yvonne

Thanks for taking the time to advice Yvonne. It might take some time for me to get used to the new hot length (it often takes quite a bit of time before I am on board haha).
Oh you always look pretty on board to me 😉
Have a fabulous start to the week Greetje!
A big YES to the belt from me! I think all this black really needs it to break it up and accentuate your waist, Greetje.
