The same orange belt and orange bag as last week, but this week as accessories to a pair of light blue checked trousers with a yellow striped shirt. How about that? Pattern mixing! Something I am not very good at and therefore hardly ever do.

The start of this outfit were the trousers. They are a bit at the back of my wardrobe as I often do not know what to wear with them. Plus, they need a higher heeled shoe or boot which is not as comfortable as flat shoes. Then I remembered the trousers with my perforated suede EIJK boots. And these EIJK boots are very comfortable.

If you like to see more outfits with these trousers, click through to this post with the EIJK boots, this post with red high heels, or to this original post with a zig-zag jumper which was the best outfit but tricky because the jumper is warmer than the trousers.

The yellow striped shirt (from kpa.haarlem) was hanging in my wardrobe to be worn once again before washing. It clicked in my brain. The orange accessories are a sort of a given these days. The belt is by Weekend Max Mara and I also have this one in red; craving for another one in cream. Alas, I have spent my budget for the next 6 weeks.

Below: When I initially styled this outfit, I went for a small yellow belt. I like that too but got stuck on choosing a bag to wear with this. Yellow or blue was too obvious, so I decided for orange and swapped the belt.

Below: Sylvia of 40PlusStyle who took the photos for this post. She lives in Portugal now and pops over to the Netherlands once in a while. Out of the blue she called me to see whether I was free to have a cup of coffee with her. And I was.

Below: I tried to find out why this poster was hanging at the beginning of one of the small streets but couldn’t find anything about it. Was it a passage for cows to go to the slaughter? Honestly, I am so close to becoming a vegetarian. The things we do to animals is horrific.

Note: a reader found out what the poster represented.
On the outer wall of a corner property on Smedestraat and Morinnesteeg, the writing on the wall stated that this cow is on its way to the Toneelschuur theatre where he acts in a play called “Het Begeren Onder de Olmen / The Desire Under the Elms” by E. O’Neill. This building previously housed the Haarlem Theatre. The photo panel was dated 1992.” (Credits to the blog “I becoming Dutch“.

As I have said before, the bag isn’t this bright orange, it is far more subdued but I cannot get the colour right.

I was getting decent again in this photo. Good shot of my back. I like the shirt collar up.

It was an unexpected and lovely afternoon with Sylvia.

What happened in my life this week

The week started with a get-together of the BVA girls (well, girls…😂). Four of the six members were present. Jilske went on holiday quite unexpectedly and Claudia was too busy with work and moving house. Nevertheless, we had a good time with the four of us.

Our neighbours came for dinner and Ron decided to make it a Spanish tapas evening. We went to Amsterdam to get the food and Ron offered to do a photo shoot for the blog while we were there. Yay. You will see the result in due course.

I had also gotten a new photo assignment: ‘Colour my world’. Anything to do with colour. The market in Amsterdam was a terrific place to start. I got so many good photos (I think).

Below: A selection of my assignment photos. So hard to choose; I had 19 photos that first day… The tulips are plastic, by the way. Tulip season is over.

I returned to my Atlas Zone Therapist on Wednesday for a check-up. Due to my fall, he gave me a small after-treatment. I am fine now. And because the therapist lives very near a friend of mine, I visited her. Below: Jeanne and me. We know each other since secondary school.

Like most weeks, we saw our granddaughters. Little Evy is doing well and is crawling now.
Zoë (below) is adorable and very sweet (like all children she also tests her parent’s patience from time-to-time haha). Being a bonus mother, I never thought I would experience this kind of happiness.

My arm is improving every day but I had to go to the hairdresser again as I can still not lift my arm that high and certainly not with a heavy hairdryer in my hand. Given the fact that budget is low, this is not helping. My face is nearly normal again, only a little bit of black/blue at the bottom of my cheek and it doesn’t really hurt.

Saw Marcella (below) who was helping a friend in a gift shop.

And that is it for this week.

PS My English editor is on holiday, so, if you see mistakes in the English language, that’s the reason.

  1. Lovely pictures! Your own, I mean! You have a talent, Greetje! The soft green tunic is a rather “meh” colour, doesn’t suit you as well as the bright colours.

    1. I agree with you on the colour of the shirt, but I bought it, I like the shape so I will wear it. I tried to liven it up by wearing the striped earrings with a red button.
Thank you for your compliments on my photography. I am really still an amateur but I enjoy it immensely.

  2. Love those trousers

    1. Most things from Essentiel Antwerp are soooo good.

  3. Thanks for the always interesting blog. I thought your colour assignment for the photos was lovely. So bright and so much fun! Your outfits are always great. As everyone says, being tall helps, but being slim and well put together helps too, and that is a personal choice. You seem to have a lovely time in retirement in the Netherlands and that I think, encourages us to try to do the same. By the way, I was only thinking how good your English is, so no need to apologise. You blog in a foreign language, which is amazing. Hope the shoulder improves soon. Trish S.

    1. Thanks for the compliments Trish. I know that I am pretty good in the English language, but Selina picks up the little things like “on, with, at” that I sometimes get wrong. Nevertheless, it is great to read your compliment.
I knew I didn’t want to do volunteer work (for several reasons) and my only hobby was blogging. But I also knew that being with friends gives me so much pleasure, so that’s what I do in retirement: see friends. And now I have a new hobby: photography. Gets me out of the house walking so it serves a health purpose too.

  4. Love the outfit…orange is a favorite color of mine and I’ve got more than my share of handbags etc in every shade of orange (I blame being in Amsterdam over many Aprils and unintentionally Queens Days…sort of “dates” me). I’m 5′ 2″ so short. Its getting more and more difficult to find shops that carry nice pants that don’t have to be massively hemmed up. I could deal with this before “bell bottoms” came back in style. You are sooo lucky to be tall!!!

    1. Ahhh…Queens day in Amsterdam, those were the days. I have a couple of blog posts about that event. If you haven’t seen them, type Kings Day (without the apostrophe) in the search box and you’ll find a couple of them. The one of 2014 is the best in my opinion.
Orange handbags are versatile, you can use them with so many outfits.
As for shorter trousers, I don’t know where you live but my friend Susan of the blog Une Femme d’un certain age (https://unefemme.net/), is American and she buys trousers in “Petite”.

  5. As usual I adore your blogs, really like your outfit, you are tall so can get away with most things. I am retiring at Xmas and I hope to fill my days like yours, you are a fabulous woman. Love the photos of all your friends too.

    1. Isn’t this a lovely comment? Really, it is because I always show my sunny side on the blog that you all like me so much LOL. The nasty side remains hidden haha.
Seriously, I very much appreciate your comment and I hope you will have a great retirement.

  6. Agree with the others that the orange belt makes the outfit. But I think it’s not just orange. It’s also the fact that the belt is wide— it gives it just a little bit more pizzazz.

    1. And that is what every outfit needs…a bit pizzazz. I love that word.

You always look wonderful, but you are radiant in this week’s photos! Hair is perfect. We visited Haarlem for a day about ten years ago and loved it. Your photos bring it all back. And are much better than the few I snapped. ;-). Thanks you for all the effort you put into your blog. I look forward to it every week.

    1. That is so good to hear Joanne. It is nice for someone who creates to have a little appreciation. And blogging is not a team effort, although my friends who take the photos are of course helping to create posts in a big way.

  8. Well done with the pattern mix. I think the orange accessories look great in this combo!

Sylvia looks fabulous as always. Wish I could wear hats that well!

    1. I might learn how to style after all Susan LOL. And I know what you mean with hats. I have tried a few a couple of years back. They are now in the wardrobe, taking up space. I have to give them away.

  9. Greetje,

I always enjoy your blog, clothes and your beautiful city pictures.
I also have a granddaughter named Evy, she is 23. She prefers Evelyn now she is grown up. She will always be Evy to me ❤️

    1. Glad I can keep you entertained Nancy. My granddaughter cannot change her name when she is older. She is called Evy, it is not an abbreviation. She could choose her second name but that would be far more difficult.

  10. I so enjoy your posts Greetje! And I’m so pleased to hear that you are recovering well.

It was lovely to see a the photos of Sylvia too. Her course was the one which helped me best to sort out my retirement wardrobe.

    Keep well.

    xx

    1. Yes, Sylvia does a great job of getting women over 40 getting back on the styling track. She taught me a thing or two as well.
My arm is getting better every day. I can now lift it straight into the air, only bringing it down still hurts and I cannot do a lot with it. As it is healing, I am sure it will all be fine in a couple of weeks.

  11. Great outfit! Both the colors and the silhouette are flattering to you. The orange accessories are the cherry on top. I always love a bright colored bag!

    1. It might sound funny, but I love black and off-white or black and cream. But it is not such a good combination for my skin. It is so chic though. Anyway, I have embraced colour and like that too. A bright coloured bag helps me pulling accessories together like earrings or a necklace, which are a better colour for my skin.

  12. Again you brighten my Saturday! Loved all the outfits. I wish I could find a lovely pumpkin-colored bag like yours here in the States. I always enjoy all of your photos and conversations. Keep it coming. XO

    1. Finding a good orange bag is not easy, I grant you that. It took me several years too. And when I found it, I was short of money. But I wasn’t going to let that chance pass me by. I bought it anyway.
I am very pleased you like my blog so much. Makes my blogger’s heart sing.

  13. I agree! sometimes a photo shows you at your best , and the one of you sitting on the stool is one of those, Greetje. You’re looking happy and radiant. Life is obviously good! Friends, family, good health, and a passion for your blog.
The outfit works so well, and the orange is the perfect unexpected pop of colour. You know I love architecture, so was especially enjoying those shots of Haarlem. Thanks for this post.

    1. You are not the only one who likes the photos of Haarlem or any city in the Netherlands. So, when I do a photo shoot, I make sure I photograph more than just my outfit.

  14. Long time reader here. The cow caught my interest, and I found this article about public art in Haarlem, which says the cow is on its way to the theater to perform. Isn’t that a great answer? https://ibecomingdutch.wordpress.com/2020/06/08/writings-on-the-walls-of-haarlem/

I profoundly hope I will get to Haarlem someday; your wonderful blog has brought it to vivid life.

    1. Roberta, you are a star. Thank you very much for this information. That is a lot better than the slaughter. I have updated my blog post with credits to the blog I becoming Dutch.
I hope you will make it to Haarlem one day.

Marianne and Marianna both have great shoes! from where I wonder? As always I’m envying shops in Holland..

    1. I am sorry Amanda, I have no idea where they shop their shoes. As I am not a commercial blogger AND live in the Netherlands, I can only give inspiration, no shopping addresses. If I can because I bought something current and they have a website, I will put in a link. Just for my readers, not for money.

  16. I love the delicacy, sweetness, and elegance of this look. Both pieces are very pretty and work together, even though they seem difficult to match due to the clash of stripes and checks. Your pose sitting on the stool is incredibly fashionable. I love the close-up, the earrings are cute, and you look beautiful. Thanks again for the urban photos; they help me get to know your beloved country a little better.

    1. My pose sitting on the stool is fashionable? Oh wow, that’s nice to hear, didn’t know that.
Glad you liked this post too.
