White cowboy boots…unexpectedly versatile

It was my husband who encouraged me (again) to buy these white cowboy boots. I wasn’t so sure. Firstly, I thought the boots would be too warm while wearing summer clothes. And secondly, I thought it wasn’t really my style. Too boho (bohemian).

Daphne, the shop owner of LAB, women’s Clothing, knows me when it comes to clothes and she’s pretty good in remembering what is in my wardrobe. She said “Take them home, you don’t have to pay now. Try them with the clothes in your wardrobe and if they don’t work out, bring them back in three days”. That’s the trust you build when you are a regular (and decent) client.

The boots were great with many of my clothes which you have read in the section What happened in my life this week in this post. I decided they would serve me really well.

This week’s outfit is a black linen dress which has been in my wardrobe for a couple of years. Later in this post you will see four more outfits with these white cowboy boots. All with clothes from my own wardrobe.

Below: Loes was my photographer and we went to an old area in Haarlem where I have been before for this blog. If you still know the outfit I shot there, then you have a magnificent memory. It is in the street where the Frans Hals Museum is.

Haarlem, near Frans Hals Museum

Below: You might think “What a pretty houses”. Alas, it is all fake. What you see, are the facades of the houses that used to be in this street.

Haarlem, near Frans Hals Museum

Here is what I found about it on the internet:

“The houses were built between 1608 and 1616 as rental properties for a hospital (Elisabeth hospital). Building rental properties was a common investment for hospitals in the 17th century. Originally, there were twenty identical houses, making the complex one of the earliest examples of large-scale serial construction. Eight houses were demolished in 1906. The remaining 12, together with the Frans Hals Museum (the former old men’s home and later orphanage), create a unique streetscape.
The historic layout of the houses was lost during a major renovation in 1931. The rear section disappeared to make way for the hospital’s expansion. The facades, however, were remarkably well preserved.”

Below: One of the residents put a table and a few chairs in front of their house with potted plants.

Below: At the risk of repeating the same house too many times…doesn’t this look adorable?

Below: As we are repeating anyway, here is a good photo of all the accessories. Two yellow bracelets to match the yellow in the earrings, a pink bracelet to match the bag, and the white in the earrings to match the boots with the black matching the dress. I think I did well.

Accessories with black linen dress

Below: Across the street from where we took the above photos, is the Frans Hals Museum. I knew they have a beautiful garden/courtyard, so we went in and straight through to the garden. First, I took this photo through a stained-glass window. I mean, I am into photography now.

Below: The necessary photos were taken and as we were leaving the Frans Hals Museum, I saw this carving. No idea what that man’s head is doing at the woman’s feet. Did she just behead him? Is she a sculptor and did she create that head? I think the latter, by the look of the instruments.

Below: Of course, I also took a photo of Loes in her summery outfit. Always cheerful.

The other styling with the white cowboy boots

Here we go. You will see how versatile they are.

What happened in my life this week

It started with babysitting Saturday afternoon. Not my granddaughters this time, but the son of my friend Neiske (see below, playing hide and seek).
Neiske wanted to join the fun of the Pride Canal Parade with friends and called in a favour. She is a full-time working single mum and I have so much respect for her. Her son Jacob is adorable but has such a lot of energy, you’d think they’ve put power batteries in him.
But he is soooo sweet, I did enjoy my afternoon with him.

Neiske with Jacob

I did three photo shoots this week. Well, actually one I did last Friday with Janna, a friend whom I got to know through Instagram (her account is timelessstyle.nl). We had a jolly lunch at restaurant Eeuwen of the Rosewood hotel in Amsterdam. I’ll tell you all about it next week.
Below: Janna.

When I strolled into town and had a chat with a saleswoman in one of my favourite shops, she was called on the phone. That gave me too much time to look around and I came away with a skirt and a boxy blouse. Paid with my credit card as the funds have run out this month. I really should stay clear from clothes and shoe shops. I am weak in this area.

I have been busy every day, taking photos for my photo ‘assignment’ by Katrien. The first two weeks the assignment was ‘circles’. This week and the next, the assignment is ‘reflections’. I was off to a great start but ‘reflections’ is more difficult than ‘circles’. I am grateful for rain and puddles. Here are five photos I took. Perhaps a bit much but so far I have taken over 200 photos, so count yourself lucky haha.

Below: This photo is what I call “fee work” haha. I saw this heron and even though he was quite a distance away, I was able to take a decent shot.

Below: Another unexpected pleasure was seeing these two swans with their 5 young ones. Apparently, it was bathing time.

I got a surprise phone call from Sylvia (of 40PlusStyle) who happened to be in town and whose appointment was cancelled. We had a lovely couple of hours and she took outfit photos of me (the second photo shoot) in between coffee, chatting and shopping. You will have to wait a couple of weeks to see the result, but here she is (below).

Sylvia of 40PlusStyle

Below: Ron remains the main person to put a smile on your face. He was cleaning the ditch behind his allotment when the plank he was standing on, broke. His neighbour took the photo. He didn’t harm himself but we put his phone is in a bowl with rice trying to dry. Which was totally wrong, we heard from Apple. Indeed, it didn’t work and he had to buy a new one, poor lad.

Below: I ran into Loes, being all colourful, so I had to take a photo.

The third photo shoot this week was with Marjolein in The Hague. We had beautiful weather and were trying to avoid the bright sunlight. It will take a couple of weeks before these photos appear on the blog. Having photos for 3 more blog posts in stock makes me happy. I know I can deliver.
Marjolein made me laugh by sending a WhatsApp message while I was on my way and nearly at the centre of The Hague. She wanted to tell me where she exactly was (the library) and wrote: “I am sitting by the window…didn’t get any customers yet😳”. Hahaha.

We saw the granddaughters again.

And I saw my friend Anja, who now lives in Spain, as she was in the Netherlands. They got two new granddaughters (twins) who were born this week.
That was a happy reunion. We keep in touch through FaceTime but nothing beats meeting each other in real life. Below: Anja looking ever so good. She cut her hair shorter. I like it like this and I like it longer; beautiful curls.

Friday afternoon with Anja

An hour before I were to see Anja, I bumped into Misja with whom I had a quick drink.

  1. I love visiting your blog every so often. Stumbled upon it a few years back when I was looking for ideas for a black dress I didn’t know how to accessorize. What great style you have! You’ll have to do a tutorial on how to do the casual tuck. I can never seem to get it right despite constant efforts and then just give up, leaving me to look like a sloppy mess.

    1. The casual tuck can be different to women depending on your body shape. I have a short torso and no hips or bum. So for me, it is best to wear mid-rise trousers to elongate the top part of my body. And then tuck the top in at the front, in the middle, often a large part of the middle. Then pull it a bit straight and let it hang on the sides. That way I have my hips and bum covered. It doesn’t work so well with high-rise trousers.

  2. Love the black dress on you, but my favorite was the green. Stunning! Love the reflection photos!

    1. I am with you 100%, the green one is my favourite combination with the boots. Thanks for appreciating the reflection photos.

  3. I know the central element of this post is the boots, but I’ll start by referring to the black linen dress. I think it’s fantastic and it looks great on you. The boots aren’t my favorite style; they seem to me to have an inappropriately boho feel, but the more I look at the entire outfit, the more I deny this assertion, and you’re starting to convince me that you’ve made the right choice and they look great here. I have my doubts about the other dresses, although the look with the yellow seems fantastic to me. With the black leather dress, they’re perfect, a very… tough, but charming style.

    1. Oh, I so hear what you are saying. Believe me, I was in serious doubt about these boots myself. At first I even thought they were common and very boho (which indeed I am not).
But when I tried them, they grew on my as well. And I decided to set aside my initial doubts and enjoy them. My favourite outfit is with the green dress.
I am always in doubt what footwear to wear with dresses and skirts. Unusally, I find (high heeled) pretty shoes make the outfit frumpy, old-fashioned. Well, with my old head above it. A young girl would probably not have this issue. And then these boots help, just like sneakers.

    2. I agree with Josep-María, the boots with the yellow dress is my favorite. After looking at the photos a number of times, I’ve come to see that the longer length of the yellow dress complements the boots perfectly.

      1. Ah, that’s what you all like about the combination yellow dress with cowboy boots. The dress is long enough to hide the boots…hahahaha.

  4. Loved it all, my fav bit this week was your reflection photos! Very nice balance and interest in all of them.

    1. I am so enjoying these photo exercises. When I “complained” to my “teacher” Katrien that reflections is so much harder than circles, she suggested to switch to something else. But I am old-school. If you have to learn something, you do not quit when it becomes more difficult. So, two weeks of reflections it will stay. Got some good ones on the beach this morning.

  5. I had cowboy boots when I was a child and remember them as being uncomfortable. I hope yours are OK. They look good with an astonishing number of outfits. Good on Ron for suggesting them!

    1. Oh I know, the leather ones, especially the Sendras can be so uncomfortable. They do say that when you persevere with Sendras they become really great, but I haven’t got the stamina.
These are suede and really comfortable. The boots being white suede was another thing which made me hesitate. How do I keep them clean? So far so good. I sprayed them 3 times.
As for the number of outfits…I have more LOL.

  6. Love the boots they add an element of interest to your outfits.
Love all your pictures. I am traveling in Holland this week from Canada and am so excited to see your town of Haarlem next week. I plan to visit some of your shops you have mentioned. Kind of a walk of ” stars” !!

    1. What fun! I hope Haarlem doesn’t disappoint you as I have always shown the best bits of course. Never the new build areas haha.
Hope you will have a wonderful holiday.

  7. Hi Greetje
I love the cowboy boots they go well with many outfits and they are very fancy. I’ve never seen white and black ones they look very dressy. I have a black pair that I haven’t worn for a long time. I guess I’ll have to start wearing them in the fall as it’s way to hot to wear them right now. I love all the places you visit so interesting. Keep posting them as I certainly enjoy looking at them. Cheers from Canada.

    1. You can reverse what I did, black cowboy boots with white trousers. Just take all your trousers out of the closet and try them. Perhaps pink or purple ones are good. I never saw black and white ones either. To tell you the truth, I thought they were a bit common when I first saw them. But when I combine them with something classy, that feeling disappears.

  8. Lots of cute outfits, but my favorite part was your photos of reflections! I particularly like the one of the canal. I can see where these exercises would make one more observant, having to always be on the lookout. Thanks for another day-brightening post.

    1. I am so enjoying these photo exercises. When I “complain” to my “teacher” Katrien that reflections is so much harder than circles, she suggests to switch to something else. But I am old-school. If you have to learn something, you do not quit when it becomes more difficult. So, two weeks of reflections it will stay. Got some good ones on the beach this morning.

  9. Oh, the boots are great! I especially love them with the yellow dress.

What a busy (and fun) week you’ve had. Poor Ron, but he seems to have kept his good spirits, even covered in mud!

    1. Most readers love the boots most with the yellow dress. I like that one too (obviously) but the green one is my favorite.
Ron can laugh at himself. It is a financial set-back but fortunately his old phone was about 4 to 5 years old. Which is a write-off in these modern days.
I am so pleased with my 16 Pro and with the retouche button you showed me. Having a field day with that.

  10. You look so classy. I don’t know how, but the boots work with every outfit, your black linen dress and the green one being my favourites.
And the fact that the boots are white and in my mind “shouldn’t” work but they do. Just goes to show, that anything is possible in fashion.
Poor Ron, it’s nice that he is not afraid to laugh at himself, but maybe some tears at having to buy a new phone.

    1. Actually, I thought the boots were a bit common when I first saw them. But they lose that when I combine them with something more classy. They would be dead common worn with a legging and a short T-shirt haha. Well, in my opinion. Each to their own of course.
Ron has a great sense of humour and can certainly laugh at himself. The new phone…oh well, a bit of a financial set-back but fortunately he didn’t own a fairly new phone. These things tend to be old in 4 to 5 years…crazy world.

  11. I love the white cowboy boots! So many beautiful fashion items in this blog. I like the boots with the yellow dress the best. But I also like the last photo with the necklace and matching bag. I have a similar necklace and am inspired to use it!

    1. We all have our preferred combination of dress and boots. Mine is the green one but of course, I like them all.
About the last photo with the grey trousers…I was hesitating with the necklace when I put it around my neck. Then I thought of putting it ON the shirt instead of IN the shirt. I could put the collar up (and it stayed up) et voila…a good outfit.

  12. I like the cowgirl (!) boots best with the green dress-something about that silhouette is very appealing. I learn so much about styling and color combinations from your posts!

    1. I agree with you, the boots with the green dress is my favourite too of these outfits. I have more outfits with the boots to show you. But the green dress outfit is the best.
Glad you get inspired by my styling and colour combinations. I am not a good stylist but I do have stamina and a passion for adorning myself haha.

  13. Love all the cheerful and colorful photos of friends. Not a fan of the cowboy boots — my daughter and fam live in Texas, where the boots are part of the daily ethos. Anywhere else, they look costume-y.
PS. I mean to create a compliment sandwich — praise, criticism, praise. So, I’m adding that the boots look great with the yellow dress, whether you’re in Europe or Texas, LOL.

    1. I get what you mean with costume-y, but that’s what you get when something is good, it gets copied. I was never a fan either, I thought it was too boho, but if they compliment 10 outfits (I have more to show you), then I am sold.
Funny that you do that to…compliment sandwich. I learned that at work.

  14. Love all the outfits, especially the last!
    You look great in pants
Not a fan of cowboy boots, I always want them to come up to the knees, I find they cut our legs at the widest point. But a lovely blog, as usual.

    1. I like cowboy boots halfway up my calf because they show more leg than when they come up to the knees. They may be cutting at the widest point but I don’t find that a problem. Each to their own of course.

Greetje, The white boots are fabulous, and so you! I loved them with all of your outfits! Your photos are lovely. I love the way you grasp your day and pull the goodness out! Your wonderful spirit is a boost for Saturday morning in Kansas City. Merci! Kathleen

    1. If I can lift your spirit by showing you mine, I am a content woman. Wishing you an extraordinary good week.

  16. Love the white cowboy boots, especially with the yellow dress. A great blog once again, always full of interesting facts about your locations. You have a good man in Ron, he always seems to be such fun!

    1. I love the boots but for me the photo of the boots with the green dress is the star of this post. Because it is a bit silly.
And yes, I do have a good man in Ron. I chose well, 37 years ago.

  17. Hi Greetje – those boots! So festive! They bring joy to every outfit. And it shows in your smile when you wear them. Great purchase!

    1. I love the photos which are a bit less posed, a bit quirky. But that is hard to come up with.

  18. Hi Greetje, these boots make every outfit look fresh. What a great purchase!

    1. And so unepected. I have more outfits to come with these boots.

      1. Hi Greetje…..Love the green necklace and bag….stunning!

        1. Thanks. Yes, I got the gear haha. That necklace I found in Rome when I was there with my BFF. I fell totally in love with it (and the brand).
The bag is a present from my husband.
