Last week I learned how not to wear this jacket. Therefore, this week, I wore the jacket unbuttoned with my new green balloon skirt. Much more flattering.

Marjolein suggested we’d do the art deco and art nouveau route through The Hague, knowing how much you love old buildings. Personally, I adore art nouveau and even more art deco.

You are about to see a building and my outfit alternately. I can only give you information on some of the buildings as we didn’t follow the list with art deco and art nouveau buildings too closely.

Below: Number one. This one I know, it is an art nouveau building.

Beautiful building in The Hague

Below: There was a lot of backlight but I still like this photo. A bit blurry.

Green balloon skirt with a white jacket

Below: Probably a totally different architecture style. Honestly guys, I am not exactly an expert on this.

Beautiful building in The Hague

Below: We found this lady sitting outside of her shop and I joined her for a chat.

Below: Across the road we saw this building from 1916 with a stone pelican on each side. Not art deco or art nouveau but in the style of the “Um-1800 Bewegung” (never heard of).
It needs a clean to shine. Always the problem with sandstone as Glasgow knows so well. And I hate that they put electricity cables across the front of the building. Not something you see much in the Netherlands.

Beautiful building in The Hague

Below: I would have guessed art deco, but no, our guide list said it is art nouveau, from 1901.

Beautiful building in The Hague

Below: Another bench. I tried a couple of poses which I picked up from Instagram. Horrible execution by me, haha. I definitely need to practice them in front of a mirror.

Green balloon skirt with a white jacket

Below: I doubt whether this is art deco. I just liked the building.

Beautiful building in The Hague

Below: Trying out a new pose. Hmm…not that good, at least not with this skirt and a belt.

Below: Building with stunning stained-glass window at the top of the shop window. The style is Amsterdam School from around 1925.

Beautiful building in The Hague

Below: Neither art nouveau nor art deco, but a stunning door, nevertheless. Internet told me that this building is an “expressionistically tinted variety of the Um 1800-bewegung”. I was lost at the first word; I am a culture barbarian.

Beautiful old door in The Hague

Below: A fine door to shoot Marjolein’s outfit. Very colour coordinated, in trendy brown with a dash of her favourite colour purple.

Marjolein

Below: Close-up of her fun shirt and beautiful earrings (purple with gold). Also love the whimsical jacket.

Marjolein

Below: The ground floor of this art nouveau building from 1903, used to be a fancy pastry shop (by the name of Krul). Both Marjolein and I adore curved windows. So did my mum. Must cost a fortune to replace when one breaks.

Beautiful building in The Hague

Below: Little square with a water pump.

Below: We were now away from the art deco and art nouveau area, but in a street with pretty buildings and stunning doors.

Beautiful building in The Hague

Below: And another one. Grand.

Beautiful building in The Hague

Below: If you didn’t know better, you’d think you are in France with that table and those chairs on the narrow pavement. It was a little French delicacies shop.

What happened in my life this week

More IT problems, especially with the blog. My terrific IT-man is helping me so well. Without him there wouldn’t have been a post last week, nor this week.

I got terrible news; my friend Rolf suddenly died at the age of 65. His wife Hanka called to inform me personally and I was flabbergasted. The day before he died, he and I had contact through WhatsApp. He wasn’t in good health but knew how to hide that from nearly everybody. Devastating news. Below: A photo of him and me a few years ago.

Rolf and me

We might not have seen each other every week, not even every month but we knew each other about 40 years. That makes a friendship special and easy. I hope I can be of some support to his wife Hanka.

Over to happier subjects as I don’t want to bring you down.

Marjolein came to Haarlem and we had a jolly good day without a photo shoot. We both spent money on clothes (she is just as bad as I am).

Below: Marjolein bought this jumper (sweater) in her favourite colour. Look at that!

Marjolein portrait

Below: The shop owner suggested I’d take a photo of Marjolein while she leant over the half shop door. Made for a pretty picture.

Marjolein at the shop door window

Below: I wore this while shopping with her.

Green and yellow silk blouse with jeans

My SIL celebrated her birthday in the east of the country and I love these birthday parties. I get to see my whole family and their offspring, which happens only once or twice a year.
Below: Two photos of the celebration in the garden.

Below: I wore a black shirt with a black and white skirt to the party. I had the skirt made from a second-hand dress I saw in a charity shop. The idea was nice but unfortunately, I get a great, big, fat tummy in it, which my darling husband pointed out to me when I got home. I am wearing the shoes that made me fall a couple of weeks ago. Thought they wouldn’t do much harm with a skirt, but the toe of the shoe got stuck in the rug and I nearly went down again. I will ask my cobbler whether it is possible to shorten the toe.

Family

Below: This was the outfit, styled with a more fitted shirt and trainers (sneakers). I really like it but I have to say, I didn’t look in the mirror from the side…

Black and white skirt

We were supposed to go to Paris by train, leaving on Wednesday and returning on Thursday. Then on Monday the prime minister of France had to step down and the people were very angry about the government cut-back plans, like cutting down holiday days and raising the retirement age. And those people show their anger by blocking traffic (“Bloquons tout”) and what not. We thought it would be safer and nicer not to go. Some other time.

Photo assignment ‘In Touch’

Here are a few new photos for my assignment ‘In Touch’.

Below: When I asked my tutor Katrien whether I could submit these sparrows for this assignment, she said: “Anything you feel connected with, goes.” I adore sparrows, so this one counts.

Photo assignment In Touch

Below: Beautiful dog, mesmerized by the treat his owner was holding in her hand. We had a fun little conversation.

Photo assignment In Touch

Below: I got permission from this father to photograph him and his baby daughter. That look of love on the father’s face!

Photo assignment In Touch

Below: I laughed when I saw this doggie. His or her sibling was on another bike.

Photo assignment In Touch

Below: How gorgeous is this young woman? I asked her whether she was a model. She wasn’t. (Her sister joined later and was also beautiful.) I think I have done her justice. Of course we chatted.

Photo assignment In Touch

Below: Me and my shadow. The owner tried to make her look at my phone. He succeeded once but I missed part of his/her tail. No chance of doing this shot again. No biggie, the shadow shows the tail.

Photo assignment In Touch

Below: Neighbours, not from my street but one around the corner. They had their street party a week after ours and it was their first. They were thrilled. Our street party was the 19th one and we got a bit ‘simple is enough’, but they went full blast.
I was taking the plastic to the container when I bumped into them. We talked for an hour. That is connecting, isn’t it?

Photo assignment In Touch

Below: I struck gold with this one. When I turned the corner to city hall, I thought to myself “Wouldn’t it be awesome if there was a wedding going on?” Bingo.
Is this In Touch/Connected or what?

Photo assignment In Touch

In between rain showers, Ron was kind enough to do a photo shoot for next week’s blog post. That sets my mind at ease. I get nervous when I haven’t got photos in stock.

  1. I’m so sorry for the loss of your friend. It’s never easy, but especially tough when it’s sudden.

I do like the outfit, and especially enjoyed the architecture tour! Next time I visit, you’ll have to show me around The Hague. You were probably wise to postpone your Paris visit…no fun trying to get around with transportation strikes!

And I’m glad you’ve resolved the tech issues. Those are never fun and always nerve-wracking!

    1. Thanks for your sympathy words. As you grow older, the more you have to deal with death as you know so well.
As for the tech issues, they are still not resolved. Having caching problems now. Agghh.

  2. I am sorry for the loss of your friend. I am sure his wife will enjoy your continued friendship ❤.
Those white boots sure elevate an outfit. Those shoes on the other hand will certainly need a rethink. We can’t have you go down again!!
Learning so much through your lense when you do your assignments.
    Cheers

    1. Thank you for your sympathy.
Those white boots are a revelation to me. The shoes will go to the cobbler on Thursday, but summer has gone here in the Netherlands, so it is for next year.
Funny that you learn from my photo assignments too. I certainly learn a lot.

I really like the touches of orange with the bubble skirt and white jacket. And such luck to find the wedding! Your other touch pictures are very good as well.

I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of your friend. We go through so much together as the years go along. Thank goodness for memories and the opportunity to reminisce (after the acute grief has passed) with those who knew him too.

    1. The wedding…yes, sometimes the universe hears your plea. Thanks for the photo compliments. Love the assignments.
You are so right about the loss of a friend. So many good memories.

  4. I like all the fashion you and Marjolein wore on your architecture tour. Those photos of the buildings were fabulous. The shoes that are problematic sure are attractive. Hope you find a solution. And about losing a long-time friend, I am sorry and I understand how you feel. I have lost too many old friends this year. Your in touch photos were so good!

    1. I will take the long pointed shoes to the cobbler next Thursday. Fingers crossed.
Thank you for your compliments on my In Touch photos. It is such fun. And thank you for your sympathy. The older we get, the more friends we lose. Such a rotten aspect of getting older.

  6. I like the balloon skirt because I like clothes with volume and movement. The combination with the white jacket is perfect. I love the suit jacket the lady at the store wore. I’m sorry about your friend, stay strong. I missed your close-up today.

    1. Whenever I wear a skirt or a dress, I think of you. After too many trousers and jeans I feel the need for a skirt or a dress. This skirt is very comfortable.
The suit the lady at the store wore…you mean the black and white striped suit?
Yes, we forgot the close-up. A pity as the earrings are cute.

  7. So sad to hear that you lost Rolf, your dear friend of 40 years. I’m sure his wife will be glad to have you to share memories with.
You look amazing in the bubble skirt and short jacket – so pretty! I love the white boots and orange bag with it – so chic.
Great architecture photos, Greetje. And that photo of the father and daughter is so sweet.

    1. Rolf got a beautiful send-off with many people attending. I hope I can be of support to his wife.
Thanks for that compliments on my outfit. As it is a comfortable outfit, I think I will wear it more than other skirts.
My next photo assignment is titled Series. Let’s see what I make of that.

  8. What a great looking outfit! Your height allows for the balloon skirt , which I guess is hemmed with a soft puff …to make it lie that way.
Seeing the beautiful buildings had me doing a bit of research about those two architectural periods. I was very fortunate to stay in the Hotel Regina in Paris in 1993, across from the Louvre. It is a lovely example of Art Nouveau and the lobby there has been used in films . Prices are rather different now!
I had a chuckle when you mentioned Ron told you his thoughts regarding your black & white skirt once home…men! My much anticipated solo trip to Paris is coming up, so I do hope the French protesters sort things out before I arrive. Have a lot of strolling to do during my short stay.

    1. You are right about the skirt hemming.
Although Ron’s remark on the skirt isn’t what I wanted to hear, I am glad he gives me honest comments.
Have a wonderful time in Paris. I am sure the protests will stop within a week or so. Mind you, it wasn’t everywhere in Paris, but we didn’t like to chance it and still had the opportunity to cancel.

  9. Love the bubble skirt…not what I expected at all…just beautiful.
Also a very lovely day. I’m usually in Amsterdam in early November, occasionally in April so my rarely used in California rain gear comes out.

    1. The bubble skirt is perfect for me (no hips and no bum). We have had really good weather over summer. In September it is rain, sunshine, rain, sunshine. Very fickle. You are wise to bring your rain gear when you come to Amsterdam. Especially in November and April. June, July and August are better months but there still is no guarantee.

Very sorry to hear about the loss of your friend!

    1. Rolf got a beautiful send-off and many people attended. He was clearly much loved. Because of all the photos that were shown, it was as if he was there with us. The sadest thing of getting older is losing friends.

  11. Love your balloon skirt! Your photos of architecture are lovely along with your “connected” shots. So enjoyable always! Best thoughts for your friend who passed and his wife. Kathleen

    1. Thanks for your lovely comment Kathleen. Glad you could comment. Last week it was impossible at times.

  12. Wow! What an outfit Greetje — the gray/green bubble skirt and white jacket are smashing with those cowboy boots! I’d been on the fence about the boots in other outfits but they are spectacular here! The orange belt pulls it all together.

I’m so sorry for the loss of your friend Rolf, you can tell he was a lovely person.

The purple sweater is elegant on Marjolean.

Such touching photos this week and last of dads and their kids. And the sparrows are sweet.

    1. Those cowboy boots are a complete surprise to me. Never knew I needed them so much.
Did you spot the earrings I am wearing with the skirt outfit?
Rolf got a beautiful send-off and loads of people attended. He was very much loved.
The photo assignment for this week is one that puzzles me again: Series. Oh well, it shouldn’t be easy if you want to learn.

  13. Love the opening outfit with this post. That skirt is the bomb! Sad about the shoes with the pointed toes. I love them but falling is a nightmare. Your assignment photos are all terrific my favorite being the neighbors around the block. So sorry about the loss of your friend. I lost my best friend unexpectedly 2 weeks ago. Still learning how to cope with it. I too love purple but on men! Isn’t that strange!

    1. Because I have no hips and no bum, such a balloon skirt is perfect. Although I did see photos with it which made me think “You can overdo it; now it looks as if you have wide hips” haha.
I hope my cobbler can save my shoes. He is skilled, he can make shoes from scratch, so who knows.
It is so sad to lose a friend to death. Sorry for you loss too. I lost my best friend in 2022 and I still miss her. Rolf is the second close friend who is gone.

  14. I loved all the pictures today. Nice style ups too!!

    1. Thanks Patti. Styling isn’t easy for me, contrary to what everybody thinks. I am always glad I succeed.

  15. Hello, You

What lovely outfits this week and what beautiful buildings!

How sad about your friend, Rolf. I’m sure you cherish your memories of times spent together and knowing you, I know you’ll be a good friend to his wife as well.

    Hugs,

    Gee x
PS This is my second attempt to post a comment this week and last week I gave up in the end! I’m glad your IT man is on the case and I’m sure he’ll sort it for you but thought you and he should know what’s happening from this end of your blog. Well, I assume it’s stemming from you, it couldn’t possibly be me, I’m perfect! (I’m pressing Submit and my message goes – far far away into the ether, presumably.)

  16. Hello, You

What a great post this week! Loved your outfits and all the beautiful buildings.

And yet, the pleasure fades a little when reading of your friend’s death. How very sad, for his wife and family and friends, especially you. How you must cherish all those years you knew him, and I just know that you will indeed be a similar good friend to his wife.

    Hugs

    Gee x

    1. I am as much friends with his wife as I was with Rolf so I will do my utmost.
Sorry you had to attempt to many times to comment and no, it wasn’t your fault. Indeed, you are perfect haha. It was a hard IT week. Been on the phone to my blog hosting company eight times and the problem is still not solved. But my IT-guy improved the working a lot.

  17. Love this post! You have outdone yourself. Fashion, buildings, friends, family, a catch up and your photo assignment. Such fun for my Saturday morning. XXX OOO

    1. Thanks a lot Molly. It is so rewarding to know I have entertained my readers. Especially because I wasn’t that sure with this post.
