WARNING

I am having technical problems with my blog.
They are working on it, but things might not be working properly.

This was a spur of the moment outfit. Ron wanted to go to the Albert Cuyp market in Amsterdam and offered to take blog photos. I didn’t have any summer outfits left and I need time to come up with a really good outfit from my wardrobe. Time, I didn’t have.

Which means I am not too fond of the outfit. The white of the boxy jacket is clashing with the cream of the palazzo trousers; it makes the cream of the trousers look dirty. I should have worn my white flat shoes to bookend the jacket but didn’t think of that. Never mind, I have done worse.

Below: We started at Gerard Doustraat. Gerard Dou was a painter from the 17th century. Read more about him on Wikipedia.

Gerard Dou

It was the first day of my new photo assignment “Colour my world”. Didn’t do much better than that day.

Below: We lingered at a shop which sells recycled / upcycled clothes and other items. I could find something I like in such a colourful shop.

Nice outfit at Gerard Doustraat

Below: In that same shop this colourful necklace was a bingo for my photo assignment.

Colourful necklace

Below: And how about this outfit? I love the fabric and certainly the colour combination, but it is for a younger woman.

Green and purple outfit

Below: And here you see a flaw in this outfit. The trousers show a bit of a belly, not much, but just enough to annoy me. And the boxy jacket flows stiffly away from my body because of the ample bosom. A bad combination.

Below: OK, this is a nice photo. And colourful.

Below: It is a proper market, so they have clothes, fabric, knickknacks, vegetables and fruit. Colours again!

Fruit at the market

Below: Is this dragon fruit? I have never seen it before. Doesn’t matter really. It made for a good photo for my assignment.

Dragon fruit at the Albert Cuyp market

Below: Peppers are another good subject.

Peppers

Below: Ron loves to take photos of me through leaves. Usually, the leaves are sharp and I am blurry. Never mind.

Below: And fabric. What great colours. My favourites.

Below: As we walked on, I started to notice something. The fastening on my jacket sits wonky above my trouser zip.

Below: See what I mean? I hate that.

Below: Apparently it was a day for bright red, bright yellow and bright orange. I don’t care that this painting is really simple, I love it. So cheerful.

Colourful tulip painting

Below: It is clearly visible that my top and bottom do not align. I think my trousers should have been pulled a bit to my right and the bag strap is pulling my jacket. Learning moment. When I wore this jacket again, I held my bag in my hands.

Below: One last outfit photo against the statue of a famous Dutch singer, the late André Hazes. The bag is from my shoulder and the fastening of my jacket aligns with the fastening of my trousers.

We went home happily with our tapas and many ‘Colour my world’ photos.

What happened in my life this week

My arm is still improving but I didn’t dare blow-drying my hair so I had to go to the hairdresser again on Saturday. This Friday was my regular hair appointment. My hairpiece needs washing and blow-drying too. Need to muster up some courage for that.

Below: One of the outfits I wore this week. It is an easy dress, not restrictive in any way.

Purple dress

Saturday we had our annual Street party. Remember the fence Ron and I put together? We used that to close off the street, no more cars in the street from 4 P.M.

Fence for the street party

Well, there was a lot of wind and it fell over when I set it up at half past 3. That wouldn’t have been a problem if it hadn’t been for the couple that parked their car beside it to unload the groceries. The fence fell against their car door and scratched it. My insurance will have to pay. BIG BUMMER. They were relaxed about it, but, as you can imagine, I was not pleased.

Below: I was rather late taking photos but I think, about 50 neighbours attended. Most of them brought delicious food.
(I blurred out their faces.)

Street Party

Below: How about this cake from a high-end bakery…

Delicious Dudok cake

Below:…or these melon with feta sticks.

Melon with feta

Below: Let’s not forget Merel’s famous butter cake. She bakes it every year and we pounce on the cake as soon as she brings it out. It is delicious. You see, there is not that much left.

Merel's famous butter cake

Our next-door neighbour had a pan with a bean stew which was finished within half an hour. It went down well.
There is always too much great food at our street parties and I indulge in all of it.

The next morning I had a look at the street and everything was cleared away, no rubbish anywhere, no empty bottles, no food, no paper. Good neighbours.

Below: We always put all the crockery that is left on a bench outside a particular house. They “host” it haha. If someone is missing something, they know where to look for it.

Crockery that was left after the party

One sunny morning we met Ron’s brother and SIL for a coffee and lunch at a rural restaurant and it felt like a little holiday for all of us. Nature, quietness, good food and drinks. Below: My outfit for the coffee and lunch meeting.

Flared jeans with a yellow blazer

Then there was a dinner with 4 of my old colleagues. The company was great, the food delicious and we all had a fab evening. The traffic to the restaurant was atrocious, rush hour and an accident. It took me 2 hours by car while it was only 48 minutes going back.
Below: I was too late taking a proper photo haha, vague and dark.

Old colleagues

The new photo assignment is a difficult one: ‘In touch’ (connections). As I like my photos to evoke some emotion, I can only think of this subject in relation to people or animals, which limits my options. I have to go up to people, ask them whether I can take a photo and would they mind if I put the photo on my blog and Instagram. A lot of people say no to that. Not everyone spreads their life all over the internet like I do. But…got a few.

Below: One of my better photos. These women were very helpful and so nice. The lovely thing about these assignments is not only do you learn a lot about photography, you also get to chat to so many different people. Love that.

  1. The jacket is cute but not the best color to go with the lovely pants.
However the yellow/denim/sneakers outfit is smashing! I’m enjoying your camera assignments, they make one think! Marguerite

    1. I know, the bright blazer/denim combination always wins. It is sort of my signature style.
Glad you enjoy my camera assignments. They certainly make me think.

  2. You look amazing in the yellow jacket, blue pants, and that scarf.
Speaking of connections, you connect so well with your blog readers. Not sure how you could photograph that, though!

    1. Hahaha…that’s funny Cynthia and very abstract. Your remark also shows why ‘In touch/Connecting’ is such a difficult subject for me. But I manage. A course is meant to teach you things, also the more difficult ones.

  3. Hi Greetje,
I liked the outfit today. Just an idea for the jacket that is a little boxy; wear your purse as a crossbody and not a shoulder style. It will break up the jacket and make the front lay better. But I do like it. It is always fun to try a new idea. Loved the post today. Like a little vacay for me!

    1. A little vacation, that’s a big compliment. Thanks.
Crossbody wouldn’t have solved the problem, I am afraid. I have to be careful with crossbody bags anyway as they often separate my ample bosom and make them stand out even more. I now wear the jacket open with a white top underneath. Works much better.

  4. I think you did well with your “Touch” photos. I especially liked the neighbor with her dog and seeing your tortoiseshell cat.

    1. This assignment ‘In Touch’ is more difficult than the ‘Colour my world’, but that is the whole idea of course. Making a course easy doesn’t teach you much. I am glad you like them.

  5. Palazzo pants aren’t a favorite item, but in this case, I think the print is gorgeous. The combination with this original white shirt looks adorable. Beautiful earrings, and, as always, a beautiful foreground. I love the blue dress, the design, the drape, the movement, which I imagine.

    1. Well, these palazzo trousers were looking better with a different top as I have shown in the past. But I was in a hurry to come up with an outfit.
The blue dress is actually purple but in the photo it comes up blue. It is lovely to wear.

  6. What a great photo of Ron! And regarding the cropped jacket, it’s why I don’t wear them either. A side view glance in the mirror is all it takes to remind me why I stick to longer lines. In my opinion, a simple black tee or cashmere sweater would be beautiful with those Matisse trousers. As usual, my favorite outfit is the one with dark jeans at the end — love!

    1. I failed to check the mirror from the side…I was in a hurry to come up with an outfit.
And I have worn these trousers with different tops and shirts and it was fine.
The jeans outfit is always good. Jeans and a bright blazer, my signature style.

  7. I was recently in Amsterdam for a few days. We had perfect sunny weather and enjoyed our quick visit with a walking tour, canal cruise, Rijksmuseum highlights tour, and plenty of free time to wander. We enjoyed your lovely hometown.

    1. When the weather is good, it is a wonderful city. Alas, it often rains as my friend Susan experienced.

  8. Your street party looks like a lot of fun.
Did you buy a dragon fruit? My kids love them. They are different from any other fruit I’ve tasted.
Is the market open year round or only in summer? I’ll be in Amsterdam after Christmas for a few days. Thank you.

    1. The street party is always fun, every single year. Next year two new residents are going to organise the party. Yay.
I didn’t buy the dragon fruit. Too busy with photographing and being photographed.
The Albert Cuyp market is open all year round (https://albertcuyp-markt.amsterdam/?lang=en)

  9. I want to copy the outfit Yellow Jacket and dark blue jeans. The scarf makes it!! Where did you buy that scarf? Husband Ron took so many flattering photos of you. You look lovely in every one even though you didn’t like the outfit. I liked it a lot. I would have put a black sweater with it. The fabric shot makes you a star in that color photo assignment. And I love the photo with the man and his daughters. Great job on every front!!

    1. Copy as much as you like, that’s what this blog is for. The scarf was a present from my friend Anja years ago and I bet not an expensive one. Cannot help you with a shop address.
Funnily, I have worn the trousers with a black shirt (and a cream top, and a brown shirt).
The photo assignments give me much joy. Glad you like them.

  10. Love the yellow jacket outfit for the coffee meeting. Perfect with the dark trousers and a very pretty scarf. The main outfit was okay, but lacked your usual pizzaz! But those trousers really do fit you so well. How nice that your neighbours all clean up after themselves. The mini fence will work well if you put small sandbags to brace the base. Seems to me the people with car should have been more careful with how closely they parked- hardly your fault!

    1. I did put ‘enforcement’ bags on the base of the fence and that helped. But that was, of course, after the fact.
My neighbours should have been able to park as close as they wanted to, as they could not know that the stupid thing would fall. It is really entirely my fault.

  11. Your street party looks like so much fun. How wonderful to live in a neighborhood where such gatherings are possible. You looked fabulous in the outfit with the yellow blazer. The outfit was very flattering. I liked your patterned pants but not the cropped jacket. I actually don’t think that cropped jackets look good on anyone! Would love to see those pants paired with a different jacket. It would be quite beautiful. I love your picture of the colorful bolts of fabric. Your photography is wonderful.

    1. So many compliments…thank you very much. I have actually shown these palazzo trousers a numerous times on my blog with different tops, so yes, there are better stylings.

  12. I loved the trousers they look amazing and also loved the cropped jacket , thought they looked pretty good together

    1. Well, I’ll accept your compliment with joy but I still think it’s not my best creation. Let’s agree to disagree haha.

I was really interested to read your comments on the palazzo trousers because my first reaction to the outfit was very negative. It must be so hard to come up with new outfits every week, you do a fantastic job so one not so fabulous one every now and then is understandable. Like others I just loved you in the yellow jacket, totally hit the spot. I loved all your asignment pictures, but my favourite was your neighbour with her dog. It was just lovely. x

    1. It is hard to come up with new outfits, especially from my own wardrobe. I am not a stylist, far from it, so it takes me a lot of time and disappointments before I create a good outfit. And everybody thinks I am so good at it haha. NOT TRUE.
Showing the failures is one way of keeping the blog real.
The photo assignments really surprised me. I like it so much.

  14. Love you in bright yellow!

    1. Ah yes, bright colours are so good for me. And I still buy tops in colours that do not suit me. Because I like the style of the top. Very difficult to make it work.

  15. I agree about the white top with the cream pants, but still love those pants on you!

Your colorful photos are so fun, and I’ve really been enjoying the ones you posted on Instagram as well.

    1. Sometimes I don’t get it right…it happens and I’ll share it. We all learn from our mistakes.
I am enjoying the photo assignments immensely.

I agree that this week’s outfit wasn’t one of your best, but I LOVE the one that you wore for coffee and lunch with Ron’s brother and SIL!

    1. I want to share the successes and the failures with you all. Actually, it is the failures from which we learn most.
And I agree that bright colours and blazers are my forté.

  17. You look fabulous in vivid colors like the blue/purple dress and yellow blazer. The photo of you with the Andre Hazes statue is really nice.
    You brighten my Saturdays!

    1. I am very pleased that my little blog can brighten your Saturdays. Bright colours are the best, but I still sometimes buy black. Or white. Or a pale colour that doesn’t suit me at all. Just because I like the shape of the garment.

Greeter, The pants look fabulous on you! I loved the outfit. Your street party sounded delicious! What a lovely idea to think of your street as a village. I cherish neighbors who are no longer and those who are still here. Your eye for color is amazing. My world isn’t that colorful! There is a certain sweet quality that you have captured in your connections photos. Merci for sharing your world! Kathleen in Kansas City

    1. What a lot of compliments Kathleen, thank you very much.

  19. So your outfit may not be perfect Greetje, but your patterned trousers brought a smile to my face, and I loved all the colours today. I would like the orange umbrella hanging up in the recycling shop!
The photo of you checking your zip is nice, it catches you looking down, and I think there is something lovely about that, where you are not posing for the camera!
Good to see your cat. I have had five cats in the past. They are each their own selves. And to have such wonderful neighbours, was wishing I could join in, and munch too!

    1. Not posing is sometimes really good but a lot of my ‘non posing’ photos are horrible haha.
As for my neighbours…it is great to be able to create a sort of village feeling in our street with a yearly party. Nobody bothers another neighbour but we know of each other and help each other.

  20. Oh how frustrating when an outfit doesn’t work out. I have a pair of pants with a similar large print pattern and have also found it very difficult to style. It almost needs a matching coordinated top from the same material, as nothing else seems to go with it.

It seems to me that an additional connection is the connection you get to make with your photo subjects.

Many thanks for sharing with us!

    1. I have worn these trousers several times with tops that worked. This time I had a new boxy jacket and as Ron wanted to do a photo shoot for the blog I had to come up with a “new” outfit. In haste…
Clever way of explaining the additional connection haha.
