Brooches on my blazer

Copying a trend from Instagram, I put on six vintage brooches on my blazer, all sparkly. I had another one fixed in the middle of my waist, but it broke before we even started the photo shoot. Below you can see it styled at home with the middle brooch still intact. It is not the best place for a brooch when you have an extremely short waist (1 inch) and a bit of a belly. That red bit on my nose was a little wound I got from ripping an anti-snoring plaster off. I didn’t know the old age thing of a ‘thin skin’ had already arrived. I remember that from my mother. It healed quicky, helped by some ointment from my neighbour across the road.

As background I suggested Marjolein to use an area in The Hague where I used to work. I was 23 at the time and of course, things have changed significantly.

Below: On our way to the area (near the Royal Stables), this pretty church was shining in the sunshine. I photoshopped the cars out of the picture.

Below: On the right side of the canal was the company where I worked, a temporary employment agency for designers and draughtsmen. One hundred percent English; I was the only one who spoke Dutch. It was at this place my English improved much during the 2 1/2 years I worked there.
It looks really dark but that was because that side of the canal was in the shade.

Below: As you can see on the left, the sun was shining brightly.

Below: Beautiful old shop selling antique furniture. The black stone at the bottom of the shop shows what used to be sold here in the old days: “Gas en electrische ornamenten” (Gas and electric ornaments). No idea what they meant by that.

Below: I took my coat off and we started the photo shoot. The back of the Royal Palace and the Palace gardens can be spotted in the background.

Had we been there an hour or so earlier, we would have seen three horses escaping from the Royal stables and running around in the Palace gardens. The military police immediately closed the gates to the garden (open for public) but it took them 15 minutes before they caught the horses haha.

Below: A video of the escaped horses, copied from a regional news channel.

Below: Sitting in front of a fashion salon. The mesh top was a reasonably priced item I bought a couple of weeks ago, together with Marjolein. It has lovely long sleeves.
Ron commented “Oh la la, see-through” when he saw it. Too bad darling, I am wearing a nude coloured Uniqlo heat-tech shirt underneath.

Below: Marjolein spotted the dog ornament and said, “Black and white, just like you.”

Below: Mirror photo, through the window of a ballet school we both went to in our early twenties. Well, me for a few months and Marjolein for a long time. She still dances. We have quite some history together in The Hague.

Below: As we walked to the other side of the canal, we spotted this bicycle. Isn’t it cute?

Purple and pink decorated bicycle

Below: The bridge and the canal made for a nice picture. I learned that I should not lean all the way back when such a photo is taken. Ron thinks three photos of the canal is too much. I don’t.

Below: Walking in the Palace gardens, looking at the stables. Bling bling at the back as well. You saw this blazer before with my orange pleather trousers. This blazer with the cinched waist together with the wide trousers gives me an hourglass figure.

Below: Goofing as I still don’t know any good new poses. The Wandler bag is a favourite. It goes with so many outfits.

Lunch in The Hague

We decided to wander through town a bit before returning home; always a bad idea, going into shops with me. I bought a golden/pearly necklace (very fake, nearly camp, but I liked it) at a second-hand store, so the damage to my wallet wasn’t too large. I am wearing the necklace in the last outfit photo below, with the yellow jumper.

Below: Marjolein pointed out the eagle statue on top of a building in the shopping area.

Below: This little figurine is very much my taste but it was in an art gallery (which means big bucks), Christmas time is expensive and I didn’t know whether Ron would like it. It is still in the gallery.

Below: Walking back to the car I photographed Marjolein. Great outfit. Again. She never lets me down. I must remember this pose.

What happened in my life this week

Apart from this photo shoot, not much happened. Which I don’t mind, I like some quiet time, as long as it doesn’t last too long.

On Monday I visited my friend Maurits for a coffee and a chat. He and I get along so well. Forgot to take a photo (as so often).

Mandy’s children (remember Mandy, our American neighbour?) came to the door with homemade cookies. I love those cookies. They are the best. Before I took this photo I had already bitten off one of snowman’s legs. There are more cookies in the bag. Yay.
Mandy started this last year and then we return the favour with something Dutch like ‘oliebollen’ (deep fried dough balls) or Christmas stollen. It became a tradition within two years haha.

Below: Two warm and casual outfits as it was cold this week.

We had Christmas lunch at Nicky and Randolf’s place with the granddaughters running around. They always spoil us with so much delicious food. They also had a giant smoked salmon as a present for us, because we like it so much and Randolf can get really good ones.

Friday I had a lunch and coffee date with Marjolein. No photo shoot this time, but below Marjolein and I in a Christmas outfit which was warm enough for the cold weather.

The tiered ruffle skirt first appeared on the blog in this 2020 post with a bright pink jumper.

  1. The brooches are a great addition to the blazer. And I really like the pink and tan scarf with the purple jumper.

So funny about the horses! Once they get loose they want to enjoy their freedom and will keep running away if you chase them. The trick is to lure them with a bucket of oats or some other horse treat.

    1. You are right. I think they caught them that way, but only after the horses enjoyed their freedom for a bit. They are no fools.

  2. Hi Greetje, Thanks for another fascinating year of your blog, love it, you are never boring and I always enjoy your different looks. Love that pearl necklace, I have one similar from a Danish company Dyrberg Kern from when I used to sell their range in my shop.

    1. Ah you used to have a shop. Interesting. Selling what? Jewellery and/or clothes? Thanks for the compliments and Happy New Year to you.

  3. Hi Greetje, I still can’t use Spanish, or any other language, on your blog. Every time I try, I get the message “protected content”.
I love this blazer; it has a beautiful design, and it looks great with jeans. The brooches are magnificent and add a fantastic touch to the outfit. I love the scarf you’re wearing with the purple sweater.

    1. How utterly annoying my friend. My IT-man and I can both use the translation to Spanish I have asked my friend Anja to try it too as she is in Spain. I will let you know how she gets on. It might be some setting on your computer? Don’t do anything yet. I’ll let you know.
Thank you for the many compliments. I am glad the brooches are back in fashion, although I shouldn’t have waited for that. I bought them about 30 years ago, when I used to visit flea markets.

  4. I absolutely love the black blazer. Such different style than the usual! I am also happy to know that brooches are back thanks to Instagram. What goes around comes around. At nearly 75, I have seen it all, many times over. Always enjoy your blog and look forward to seeing what you are wearing and doing each week. Happy and healthy 2026!

    1. Thank you Marta, for being such a loyal reader. I love every aspect of blogging and it is so nice that so many people read my posts and appreciate them. Gives me a lovely feeling. Wishing you a Happy and Healthy New Year too.

  5. Thank you for sharing your hobby with us all… always fun to read your posts and live through you in your beautiful part of the world. Even though I did visit last spring, Greetje, I will never tire of seeing the architecture.
Being newly solo, I kept busy entertaining friends around my table … several singles or couples over the past 10 days. My last guest was here for a quiche , salad and cake Sunday lunch. The table linen is in the wash now, until next Christmas🎄. Such fun decorating my place, trying out different recipes and having great conversations. Good way to be distracted when no family around during a rather emotionally loaded time. Happily looking forward to an interesting year ahead with you!

    1. You did so well. That’s the way to move forward, having fun with friends. Having to cook for people for 10 days is my idea of a nightmare, but I know that many people just love it.
Isn’t it great to have a lovely home all to yourself? Warm and cosy. I hope that the new year and the years to follow will bring you lots of joy.

I love your sheer lace top, Greetje. It looks great with the blazer, and I love all of the approaches on it, including the decoration on the back. Thanks so much for all the amazing pictures. I hope you and Ron had a wonderful Christmas and wishing you all the best in the new year..

    1. Thanks Sheila. The brooches were not my idea of course. But I always say “It’s better to copy something great than to create something aweful” haha.
Wishing you and L a very happy new year too.

  7. Haha who doesn’t enjoy a (safe) escaped animal adventure caught on camera. We had a loose reindeer here in the UK and half the army was chasing him. He’s safe but he had a lovely runaround.

I love the brooches look. I’m going to dig out my collection…

I want to know, what did you wear on Christmas Day??

    Seasons greetings from London x

    1. In an ideal world all animals would be free to run around as they like, right? I’d love that.
Dig out your collection of brooches and don’t hold back. You can pin a few on sleeves too.
On Christmas Day I wore jeans with a black sleeveless blazer and the same sheer top underneath as I am wearing with the brooches blazer. If you have to handle two children of 1 and 3 years, you better wear something that can cope with stains. Nicky, her husband and the girls were wearing Christmas sweaters.

  8. Re: the black and white dog statue, its exact make is in a vintage shop on Fullerton in Chicago. Wonder if they were separated at birth? It’s the shop mascot, and I’ve admired it for years.

    1. I think they were popular about 20 years ago. Apparently, globally popular. But I like your take on it, ‘separated at birth’ haha.

      1. The dog used to be a standard prize on Wheel of Fortune when you went shopping with your winnings. My friend’s mother loved it, so she got it for her for Christmas one year. Huge hit, as you can imagine!

        1. I suspected that it was mass production. Nevertheless, it is a cute dog.

  9. Thanks for another year of your wonderful blog. Much appreciate all your hard work bringing it together every week. Best wishes for a happy and healthy New Year,

    1. Actually, it isn’t hard work; it is fun work. I enjoy creating posts so much. Knowing there are people out there, reading what I publish and enjoying it, is the cherry on the cake.

  10. Fell in love with your ruffled skirt and yellow sweater

Also enjoy your photo assignments – they inspire me

    1. If I can inspire someone with not matter what, I feel proud. So thank you for your comment.

Thank you so much for another year of fun and inspiring posts! Wishing you, Ron, and the family a happy and healthy New Year!

    1. Thank you very much Joanne. It was my pleasure creating these posts, I love every aspect of blogging. Wishing you and your loved ones the same, a happy and healthy New Year.

  12. I loved all your fashions especially the beautiful jacket which is so original. Marjolein’s fashions are also beautiful. You make a great team! I always love the interesting architecture of the buildings that you showcase as well as the canal. I had a good chuckle at the “ escaping horses.”
Thanks for putting so much effort into writing your blog. I look forward to it every week. Happy New Year!

    1. I bet the horses had a good time as well. Naughty to let the police take 15 minutes before they let themselves be caught.
When I saw the jacket, I couldn’t resist it even though I already possessed a couple of black jackets. I do give away clothes that I am bored with or which don’t fit me anymore, but black jackets seem to linger in my wardrobe. The brooches trick is an old one which is back in fashion. I collected the brooches some 20 years ago.
And writing my blog posts is a hobby, it’s not a huge effort as I love it so much. Thanks for reading and I wish you a Happy New Year too.

      1. lol I always enjoy seeing (safely) escaped animals having a bit of fun. We had an escape reindeer here in the UK. He got tired after a few hours and went home but it was very cute seeing him gallivanting.

        1. That’s exactly what the horses did too, gallivanting. I bet they felt sorry for the military police after 15 minutes and let themselves be caught.

  13. The brooches are too cute and clever and pretty!!!!!!!

    1. Lots of brooches was popular about 20 years ago, when I used to collect them at flea markets and such. I am still very drawn to them. And it has come back in style. Yay.

  14. The black jacket with white top and brooches–how stylish! Love the look. Plus your cold weather outfits were really attractive. The black sweater with the metallic boots was a sure fire winner for me. Actually, loved all of your looks and Marjolein looked very chic too. Happy New Year!
p.s. The escaping horses were beautiful.

    1. Another post you appreciate. Yay. Winner. Thanks for the compliments. Looking at the photos in the post, I was also quite taken with the cold weather outfits. It isn’t easy to be stylish and comfortable and warm. The brooches jacket is something from the old days, but it has come back in style. What doesn’t, right? Wishing you a Happy New Year too. I appreciate your loyal reading and commenting.

  15. HALLO Greetje,

Also vielen Dank dafür, es grüßt Marie

  16. Greetje, you can never have too many photos of canals or buildings for me. You have excellent photography skills. I love your outfit, so classy with the sleeves of the lacy blouse peeping out of your blazer and all the brooches on your lapels.

    1. I keep telling Ron that my readers don’t mind many photos, not even of the same spot as long as there is something else to see in every shot. Thank you Marguerite, for the compliments. I gladly accept them.

I so enjoy your photos of your neighborhoods and your photo assignments. You have inspired me to view where I live through a camera. A New Year’s assignment for me to take photos purely as art every week. Your clothes are fun to see, too. Wishes for a “sparkly” New Year!

    1. Oh what fun, I inspired you to take photos like I was inspired by my friend Katrien. Hope you enjoy it enormously. Happy New Year wishes to you too.

  18. I agree with Flora, your photos are very well done, and promote your beautiful cities. You are lovely, always so stylish.

    1. Well, my passion for clothes is at the heart of my blog. No idea where I got that from. Although, my father had that passion too when he was in his twenties and thirties, but it wore off. Mind you as a carpenter, he didn’t have much of a ‘public’ to show his nice clothes and with two kids his dancing days were over. But he always changed into smart clothes when he came home from work. So perhaps I got it from him.

Loved the brooches!! I thought that would be too much, but they looked great! Lovely photos— for me, the canal could be photographed over and over. It’s lovely to read about your exploits with your friend and your normal days in general. Your building “the same” photos are beautiful! Have a wonderful and peaceful week. Kathleen in Kansas City.

    1. Never too much brooches or pearls. You can pile on as many as you like. Thank you for all the compliments and have a great new year in Kansas City.

  20. Love your jacket you are looking great. Thanks for all the lovely photos the Netherlands Tourist Board should be paying you for promoting your beautiful cities. We are stuck at home with ‘flu and so your blog has cheered me up. Best wishes from Nice.

    1. Glad my post could be of service to you, poor thing. Flu in the Christmas season, not nice at all. The Tourist Board wouldn’t pay me as they think there are too many tourists already. Which is the case everywhere in nice cities in Europe.
