Pile on the pearls

Pile on the pearls
Pile on the pearls

Ordinarily, I am not that fond of Christmas fairs. It is often just a lot of food and items you really don’t need. But as a background for a photo shoot, this fair in The Hague was fun. I called the post ‘Pile on the pearls‘ as usually, just one string of pearls isn’t enough for me. I want to see a lot of them.

Below: Walking through town to the fair, we spotted this tower of the old town hall or rather, Marjolein did. We thought you’d like it.

We decided to have coffee first, at ‘t Goude Hooft (old Dutch spelling of ‘the golden head‘). It is the oldest tavern of The Hague; there was mentioning of it as early as 1423. It has been renovated at least four times since then.
Below: It was too busy inside with large groups but we were allowed to take a photo in this cosy corner that Marjolein knew about. Bad light but a snuggly corner.

After the cappuccino and cake (ohhh…my weight) we went on our merry way.

Below: Quirky chair outside a furniture shop. Too good not to use as ‘prop‘. When I laugh like this, I don’t look too pretty; I call it my hyena face. I was wearing my fancy long black coat as seen in this post about my long denim skirt.

Below: We arrived at the fair where I walked around without a coat as we had to take outfit photos. Which was COLD.

Below: The fair provided a few fun photo backgrounds like this sleigh.

Me in a sleigh

Below: And, as I said, lots of places with food and drinks.

Pile on the pearls

Below: This stall, called Rolling Scones (funny), made me laugh when I read the sign “Skinny people are easier to kidnap…Stay safe this Christmas. Eat scones.” Brilliant.

Rolling scones

Below: Ho ho ho, another sleigh. I am wearing one long string of real cultivated pearls (the necklace that had to be restrung a few months ago), one long string of fake pearls on a leather string and a gold necklace with a pendant. The earrings are not pearls but deliberately green to bring some colour nearer my face as I am wearing a black woollen jumper. The green of the earrings echoes the beads on the belt. The dusty pink bag is a Hudson Bay sales bargain of years ago. The black boots will stay will me forever.

Lunch at Café 2005 on Denneweg was delicious and reasonably priced.

Below: Marjolein spotted a ship ornament at the top of a building for an insurance company with that name, De Zeven Provinciën (The Seven Provinces). It refers to the seven provinces that formed a pact against the Spanish oppressor (1579).

Below: I will end this part of the post with four photos of old buildings in The Hague. We have been here so often and taken photos of buildings but every time we return, we see different buildings. And that is not because they quickly built some more.

What happened in my life this week

Ron and I went out to dinner and Froukje and Petro joined us, laughter and ‘gezelligheid’ as usual. The word ‘gezellig’ is a Dutch word that cannot be translated. It means, cosy, nice, having a good time, warm, being with friends etc etc. No photos.

Hanka (below) came for a coffee and a lunch on Monday which is why we chose restaurant Het Wapen van Kennemerland as they are open on a Monday. Lots of restaurants are not. They want to have a day off too. The Dutch are very much in favour of a work/life balance. No 996 here (996 means starting work at 9 o’clock, leaving work at 21h00, six days a week. You’ll find very few Dutch people willing to do this, if not none.)

Hanka

Ron and I cleared out the cellar, or better said the big cupboard underneath the stairs. I always called it hell as it was packed with so many things and the floor was all covered; really difficult to fetch something from it. Now it is all tidy. It clears your head too.

We got new towels which I washed three times otherwise they don’t absorb any water. And we finally got a new lamp above the dining table. We had to give up on the old one which I thought looked much better, more in style with the table. But it was about 35 years old and kicked the bucket. It is a long and complicated story why, but we didn’t have much choice in lamps. This one fitted. It is not that I don’t like it, but I liked the first one more.

There will be a post next week and also the week after. I deliver every week, because I love it so much.

For now, have a Merry Christmas.

Merry Christmas to you, your family and all of your lovely friends! Love the pearls and Marjolein is a symphony of subtle glimmer and well-balanced proportions. Thanks for sharing your delightful photos through the year, and making us all admirers of the beauty, orderliness and wit of Holland.

    1. Merry Christmas to you too Elizabeth. I’ll make sure that Marjolein gets your compliments.

  2. I love the skirt; I love the length and the volume. The whole look is great and elegant.
I wanted to let you know something: your translation section isn’t working for me. It won’t let me change the language, and I can’t translate the page with Google Translate either. Have you made any changes?

    1. Oh gosh Josep-Maria, thank you for letting me know. I will tell my IT guy and I am sure he will fix the translation button immediately.
I have changed provider and in the change there might have been a few things not going correctly.

  3. Happy Christmas to you and Ron. Thank you for blogging every week – I read them all with so much enjoyment. Every best wishes for the for 2026, from Kathy in England.

    1. Hah, another reader who will appreciate my UK English haha. I love every aspect of blogging; it is my hobby. So thank you for reading my posts. Happy Christmas to you too.

  4. Merry Christmas to you Greetje from Australia.

    1. Thank you Doreen and a Merry Christmas to you too. Hope you’ll have a good time in the sun.

  5. Happy Christmas to you and Ron.
Always look forward to your posts, enjoy them very much.
    Very best wishes from Tasmania.

    1. Glad you enjoy my posts Anne, even though you are in the opposite season. Merry Christmas.

  6. Merry Christmas from cloudy, cold Northern California! I’ve always wanted to go to a European Christmas market, but for some reason I thought it would be full of handmade items. This one seemed like it was mostly mass-produced items. I guess that would make it easier on my wallet, if it weren’t for all the tempting food! Thanks for sharing.

    1. Your thought of the Christmas market being full of handmade items, wasn’t far off a couple of decades ago. But everything changes and commercializes. I don’t know whether it would be easier on your wallet though. But yes, the food is soooo tempting. And I didn’t have a thing. I want to safe the eating for the Christmas days and not gain too much weight. I was a good girl.

  7. Merry Christmas from London.
Love it that you do your post every single week. It means a lot to all of us I think.

    1. I learned a couple of things about blogging right when I started. Other bloggers gave me good tips. Consistency was one of them. If readers know when you deliver on a regular basis, you will keep your audience. And as I am pretty dutyful and I have discipline. Those things help.
And I LOVE blogging. Merry Christmas Mo.

  8. Hello, You

Oh, those drunken ducks! I want one, and I’m teetotal!

Great pics, as ever this, week. Your photographer’s diploma will be on the wall soon, I’m sure!

I was so pleased to see that you have readers from such beautiful American States as California, Montana, Kansas and Texas*, plus somewhere in Canada (definitely not an American State!). And Scotland too. All places I either have family/friends living there or have visited and loved. ( *A certain Texas hospital treated my very young grandson when there seemed little could be done. I’m sure that helped give him extra time with us and for that I still thank them.)
Knowing that you have such far away readers, with us all reading each others’ comments, is maybe a little warm, collective gezelligheid, yes? A lovely feeling this festive season.

One thing: by any chance did you happen to buy Ron that Tree of Life? 🙂 Accidentally, of course!

Thank you, Greetje, for your always interesting weekly blog. I really look forward to catching up with you and yours and looking through a window into another way of life.

Merry Christmas, one and all, from Middle England, and here’s to an excellent, healthy 2026 for us all.
    Cheers!

    Gee x

    1. I was struck by your sentence “that helped give him extra tim with us”. Does that mean he died? If so, what a devastating thing to happen. Hard to get over.
My readers are indeed from all over the world, 60% from the USA, rest from all over the world.
No, of course I didn’t buy the Tree of Life haha. We don’t put something in the house if the other one hates it.
So nice that you talked about collective gezelligheid. When I am able to bring that to the table, I am very proud.
      Have a Merry Christmas Gee.

    Loved this post!!! gorgeous pictures.

    1. Oh, how wonderful to hear. Despite what most people think, I am never too sure about a post when I publish one. On rare occasions I know in advance I struck gold. But normally I only find out through the comments.

  10. I love your posts, photos, stories – thank you for sharing your life’s journey!
Merry Christmas from Los Angeles, California

    1. And I love everything about blogging which makes a perfect combination. Merry Christmas to you too in the sunshine.

  11. Merry Christmas Greetje!

    1. And a Merry Christmas to you too Ginger. Don’t forget to call me.

  12. Thanks for taking us along to the Dutch market.
I make poffertjes for my grandson, they are so good.
    Merry Christmas from
    Canada!

    1. I agree, poffertjes are delicious. Are you a descendant from a Dutch person then?
      Merry Christmas to you too.

  13. Merry Christmas! 🎅🎄

    1. And a Merry Christmas to you too Audrey.

  14. Merry Christmas Greetje! Another wonderful post with lots of inspiration, loved seeing some of the quirky items on sale at the markets too. So many gorgeous wreaths, good idea for your photography subject.

    1. And a Merry Christmas to you too. I sometimes have to kick my own butt to go outside to photograph as it is so cold at the moment. Much easier in summer and less grey weather too.

  15. Wishing you and yours, the happiest of holidays from sunny Southern California. ! I loved everything in this post–the clothes, buildings, (especially the darling antiques/jewelry store), and all the wonderful items for sale at the Christmas Market. I would have wandered through not “seeing” all the fun things on offer–perhaps that is your photographers’s eye? I am so happy to be witness to your developing skills and subject choices–how clever to have satisfied the “same/different” theme with a myriad of wreaths! Thank you for providing such an interesting glimpse into your world.

    1. You are most welcome Patricia, thank you for all the compliments and for reading my blog and commenting.
The whole point of my photo assignments is of cours, to develop “the eye”. Perhaps it is working?
Glad you enjoy my posts, even though I show you winter clothes when you are in sunny California.

  16. Merry Christmas from Australia Greetje! Love the buildings you show, your photo assignments (particularly this week’s) and the parts of your life you share. Enjoy this special time with your family and friends.

    1. Merry Christmas to you too Adele. I am always surprised that women like you enjoy my blog when I am showing winter clothes and you are in summer.

  17. Thanks for another wonderful post. You and Marjoline look terrific, and the photos of buildings and the Christmas fair are delightful. Were I healthy, I’d be on a plane for Amsterdam in time for King’s Day and exploring The Hague and the towns you take us to each week.

    Merry Christmas!

    1. Well, I read in the paper that the city council of Amsterdam is taking steps to diminish the crowds on King’s Day. It is not safe anymore. That means they will try and stop people from outside of Amsterdam first. How? I have no idea. All good things are ruined by too many people as I saw in Milan this spring. I am glad I can give you a bit of vicarious fun through my blog. Merry Christmas.

  18. Another great post with good outfits, time shared with friend and a festive photo gallery. Thank you and Happy Holidays.

    1. You are most welcome Gayle, it is my pleasure, my hobby. Thank you for the compliments and Happy Holidays to you too.

  19. Was also on that cosy Christmas market last week. I love The Hague.
I like your and Marjoleins outfit! The string of pearls is a beautiful accessory! Wishing you and your family a merry and joyful Christmas !

    1. We could have bumped into each other again. Wouldn’t that have been funny.
Thank you for the outfit compliments. Wishing you and your loved ones a happy Christmas too.

  20. Merry Christmas from Scotland!

    1. Scotland, my favourite country, apart from the Netherlands. Merry Christmas to you too. Love the eggnog, hate the haggis, love the Auld Lang Syne and Robert Burns.

  21. That doggie face!

    1. You mean the one on the sleigh? He (or she) was adorable. The couple showered us with compliments about our outfits.

  22. Merry Christmas, Greetje! I’m also wanting to layer my pearls this season, so fun!

Thanks for taking us along to the Christmas market. I have to say, the drunken ducks are my favorite!

    1. Merry Christmas to you too Susan. I even bought a double necklace with gold and big fake pearls at the second-hand store yesterday. Cannot get enough of them. The drunken ducks are my favourite too. And the rolling scones with the sign to stay slim haha.

  23. The photos from the Christmas Fair were very appealing. I loved seeing them. Piling on the pearls was an attractive idea. with your outfit. Festive. Marjolein looks great too. The duck bottle holders made me smile.

    1. I love it when I come across something which I know will make you smile, like the drunken duck wine holders. Anything to make you smile.

  24. Look forward to your post every week! You ladies are adorable! Merry Christmas from sunny Southern Utah!

    1. Glad you enjoy my posts Anne, even though you are in a sunny area and I show you nothing but winter clothes. Merry Christmas.

  25. Merry Christmas! As usual you and Marjolein look fabulous in your outfits! Love you funny face in that one photo and the last of the hearts and ribbons is stunning.
It is in the 80’s here in Southern California. Go figure!
    Lynda

    1. Merry Christmas to you too Lynda. Of course, Marjolein and I do make the effort for a blog photo shoot. We said to each other “We should really start wearing our good clothes around the house too instead of walking around in a jogging outfit” haha. So we are making more of an effort now.
The hearts and ribbons are in a flower and gift shop which is spectacular. Enjoy the sun in Southern California. Cold isn’t that nice.

  26. I enjoyed the post today. The tours, trips, the clothing style ups. Greetje you bring all of us into your world and share. Thank you so much! Merry Christmas to you and Ron and family.
    Cheers from Pennsylvania, U.S.

    1. It is my pleasure entirely Patti. I so love blogging. Being an extreme extrovert helps haha.
      Merry Christmas to you too.

  27. Your photography has become exceptional! The closeup photo of Marjolein is professional quality. Just beautiful!

    1. Well thank you and here I was not being satisfied because so many photos are greyish and I cannot figure out why. The close-up of Marjolein was done with my iPhone.

  28. Merry Christmas from California. Love the European Christmas Markets.

    1. We are, of course, spoiled rotten so the Christmas Markets aren’t that exciting but they do provide a nice atmosphere. Merry Christmas to you too.

  29. Kathleen Johnson Avatar

Merry Christmas! Loved the lovely Noël market! Nothing like that in Kansas City! Beautiful photos! Kathleen

    1. In that case Kathleen, it was good to create this Christmas theme post. Sometimes I think everybody does that and I don’t want to be boring. Merry Christmas.
