Another case of copycatting on my part is this new black and white shirt. My friend Misja showed off her outfit on Instagram and I liked it so much but didn’t have such a shirt.
Below: Misja in her black and white shirt with a green jumper. It was my intention to wear a colourful jumper with the shirt as well, but I accidentally styled it with my black waistcoat.

Shortly after I had seen Misja’s outfit, I saw this black and white shirt in a shop, even in the sale. And…it is fitted; what a blessing after all that oversized stuff. Ignoring my low bank account and my intention not to buy anything, it came home with me. (In the evening when I checked my credit card balance, I saw to my delight, that I had accidentally transferred more money the month before than I owed the credit card company. It meant this shirt was already paid for. Yay.)

Marjolein was my photographer and she came to Haarlem. We had a lovely day together, taking photos of the outfit, talking, lunching…you know the drill.

Below: From time to time, it was sunny. Couldn’t resist photographing our townhall again, even though you have seen it so many times before. The building was radiant in the sunshine.

Below: Great steps to take a photo. I bought the white ankle boots by Fly London a couple of years ago. At first, I wasn’t sure but I am still grateful I went back to the shop to buy them.

Below: We decided to go to the townhalls courtyard. To brighten up the black and white (not my best colours but I love this contrast), I added bright green with the earrings (Lara Design) and the vintage messenger bag. The latter is a gift from Marjolein.

Below: Here I am, again with bowlegs haha (sorry Gee). I really like this outfit and this photo.

This was the last outfit photo. I will continue with buildings now. You so lacked them last week. Even though Ron said that my blog is now more about buildings than about outfits. Hmmm…

Below: A good shot of the Saint Bavo Church on market square.

Saint Bavo Church Haarlem

Below: Marjolein pointed at the fish on this building in the shopping street. I had never noticed it. The building is a monument and from the 2nd half of the 17th century.

Old building Haarlem

Below: Another magnificent monument building on our walk through town. It was built as a police station in 1898. Since 1975 the police moved to another location; now there are apartments in it. Great place to live, I think. Mind you, you cannot park your car here, which to me would be a problem.

Below: After lunch I told Marjolein to slip out of her coat, which she very reluctantly did. Her cashmere gloves stayed on haha. She chose silver for her outfit.

Old building Haarlem

Below: This used to be the mayor’s house in the old days. I have been inside the building as it used to house a fashion brand at a certain time. I also went downstairs and saw the prison cells. There weren’t many, but still…imagine prisoners being in your house, underneath your dining room, brrr.

What happened in my life this week

We had a gathering of the BVA girls again. Yay. Only Marijke was in Spain, enjoying much better temperatures than we had. The rest of us met at Marianne’s place because Marianne cannot travel long distances anymore. So, we all travel to her place and we take it in turns to shop and pay for cake and lunch.

Below: Smiling Claudia, always in a good cheerful mood.

Claudia

Below: Jilske. Most part of the year she is living in Africa with her husband. She could just about make it to see us all. (We video called with Marijke.)

Jilske

Below: Our host Marianne. I like her new hairstyle.

Marianne

The last member of our BVA group, Marianna, brought the food this time. She didn’t want her photo taken. “I look too tired”, she said.
My photo of that day you will see next week as I was wearing the jumper that will be featured in the next post. I don’t want any spoilers.

Photo shoots weren’t happening last week and probably neither next week. We have snow and ice and around freezing point temperatures in the Netherlands. That hasn’t happened for a long time. Immediately, several trains stop running, traffic jams happen all the time (more than usual) and many flights to and from airport Schiphol were cancelled.

Below: Wore the black and white shirt once more. This outfit is really layered as I am wearing a body shaper, a long-sleeved T-shirt, the black and white shirt and the jumper. Underneath the trousers I am wearing thick tights. I feel like a Michelin character but at least I am warm.

Below: I saw my friend (and professional photographer) Kitty again! Finally. She is so busy with work, relationship, children, parents (!) and she also moved house which leaves no room for taking blog photos and little time for seeing friends. It was a great morning. I miss her. She’s got a lovely, brand-new apartment with her boyfriend. The painting you see on the left is from her hand. She is a multi-talented woman.

Below: Another outfit of this week. Really cosy and warm. I brightened up the black with the Angela Caputi necklace and the earrings. Link to original post with this outfit.

Puffy black co-ord

Went to the camera shop to find out whether it is me, not operating my new camera properly or whether it is the camera itself as I didn’t like the photo quality it delivered. I want good, sharp photos. Turned out it was the camera’s fault. The owner of the camera shop took the camera back and paid me a more than fair price for it. Great service.

Below: I have to get up at 7 o’clock every day to let the dog pee and I took this photo of our garden early Monday morning.

Our garden in the snow

When the sun is out, it is nice to walk in the snow, providing you have the right boots on. I do have such boots but they smelled a bit mouldy as I left them in a dark corner without ventilation last year. Never mind, better to smell a bit than to fall. So, I joined Ron walking the dog.

Below: Our fashionista hahahaha. Those boots aren’t meant for wide leg trousers and the big hood never stays put if I don’t secure it with a scarf.

Photo assignment Same Same but Different, Snow in the park

Below: Trees, grass and bushes in the snow. Not much snow had fallen in our area that Monday as we are near the coast. The snowmen I saw in the neighbourhood were pretty pathetic. As long as the children had fun, it’s all right. Further inland the snow reached the height of 30 cm.

  1. I, too, love the architecture of your country. Every where you go on your phot shoots has interesting AND beautiful old buildings. That they stand straight and look so proud to still be around and functioning is also a compliment to your country. New is not always better.

I sometimes send them on to my children who also like architecture.

  2. Hi Greetje, love the beautiful old buildings and the canals and bikes everywhere and the outfits and your friends of course. Particularly like seeing the snow this time as we are suffering extreme temperatures, 42 the other day, yes that’s Celsius! Sadly bush fires in many parts of the country and houses lost, hopefully people stay safe.
Keep doing what you are doing, love it!

  3. Europe is so pretty isn’t it! And the scarf around the hood is GENIUS! I am trying that tomorrow.

  4. We too have been inundated with snow. On Christmas Eve, we accumulated more snow than we usually get all of December: 30 cm. Here in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada we are used to lots, but not all at once!
I do enjoy all the different architectural details you show us, as well as the style shots. Love the black-and-white shirt outfits, and I am so taken with your white boots. And again Marjolein’s outfit is gorgeous.

    1. I can understand that when you get all that snow all at once, it is rather much. 30 cm was also the case in the south of the Netherlands, very unusual for us. I’ll forward your compliment to Marjolein.

  5. Fabulous new shirt. Love the embroidery on the sleeves. Sadly I have to wear black to work (I do wine tastings) so my wardrobe is mostly black. Marjolein’s silver jacket is to die for! I, too, love Marianne’s colorful flat. I agree with Bette with all the blah beige being the rage in the US. I follow the English House and Garden and they know how to style beautiful homes with color!! The buildings are beautiful as we here in the US have few if any with stunning facades. It is chilly here too in So. California where people wear flip flops and shorts even in the winter. Today 45 degrees. Thank you for your lovely blog.

    1. 45 degrees is cold for your area, I agree. Like Marianne, I love a colourful home. Have you seen my post in the old days called ‘colourful living room’? If not, just type it in the Search box and it will pop up.

  6. I particularly loved the architecture photos. My parents were immigrants from Holland.

    1. I guess you have indeed a reason to like the architecture photos. I don’t know whether everybody does, but if there are complaints they should tell me.

  7. Hello, You

Cracking blog this week! Had to laugh at the first pic, especially when I saw your comment. I just love to hate those trousers!

But I love your black and white outfit, the one you’re wearing at home. The red bag gives it just the right amount of ‘pop’- you look great. As does Marjolein in her ‘silver-wear’. Very nice indeed. The BVA girls scrub up well too! (That’s a complimentary term in the UK in case you didn’t know, I’m not being rude.) Everyone looks happy to be with one another and it’s especially pleasing to see Marianne looking so well under her new hairstyle.

Despite snow and sleet initially, we missed the worst of the dire weather predicted for our area. Apparently just one degree in the overnight temperature made all the difference, so the pretty snow scenery we saw outside soon melted away. Today is very chilly, but sunny. Sunny, I like. Chilly can go as quickly as it likes: next week according to the forecasters, so maybe no more wearing smelly boots for you over there very soon.

    So, have a good week,

    Gee
PS Tell Ron your readers like your architectural photos, particularly this reader!

    1. I knew you would chuckle when you saw my mentioning of you hating the trousers haha.
I do know the expression of scrubbing up well. As a matter of fact, I know a great many British expression like brass monkey’s weather (and I know the full version too), a sight for sore eyes etc etc. I was taught well.
As far as I am concerned chilly can go too, although you can dress for that type of weather. Rain I hate.
You might like all the architectural photos but I don’t know whether all my readers like that. Many might get bored with it. I don’t know.

  8. Your photos of architecture and nature are lovely! It is so nice of you to allow your readers to peek into your life!

    1. Ah Kathleen, those are the perks of an extreme extrovert haha. Sharing nearly everthing is one of the perks but it also comes with some drawbacks. Like everything in life.

  9. Random comment, but there is so much beautiful color in Marianne’s place. I cannot wait for the beige and BLAH stage to end here in the US. I ignore color trends, for the most part, but they govern what’s available to buy, from clothing to home decor. I definitely need Marianne’s beautiful velvet sofa!

    1. My husband and I have discovered a furniture consignment store nearby after moving to another state and needing some pieces to fit our new space. People sell items that still look like new and are in great condition, are often older and therefore not in the blah colors that are in style now, and are a great price. You might look for one in your area. I’ve seen a number of teal chairs and couches over the past few months.

      1. Terri, I will forward your comment to Bette as I don’t think she will read it. I always mail my reply so there is no need to return to the post and the comments.

      2. Thank you, Terri, that’s such a great idea. Much appreciated!

    2. Yes, Marianne’s place is a joyful place. We both like our house decoration to be colourful.
I agree with you in that you might ignore trends but when your taste isn’t available in the shops, there is nothing else to do but wait for better times.

  10. Oh so much to chose from this week. Here goes! I love the colorful upholstery in Marianne’s home, I also have a teal sofa. She has excellent taste! I like your two extra outfits in black and white. Those boots you wore with the puffy black outfit are smashing! What is the brand? Kitty is striking, Jilske and Claudia look so happy. The building with the fish is very elegant! And finally, how does Watson do in the cold? I have a desert doggie, found abandoned in the desert, he hates the cold. The low is zero today, the house is 18 and so he has to wear a jacket at all times. As always, thank you for this charming blog.

    1. The boots with the puffy black outfit I bought second-hand last year. So I don’t think they are available anymore. The brand is Lilian and I think it is a Dutch brand, but made in Italy. You should be able to find equivalents though.
Watson doesn’t mind cold at all, nor snow. Mind you, he usually goes into the water too when it is really cold but I haven’t seen him do that for the last week.

  11. You look wonderful even in the cold; I too, am searching for a great black striped shirt. We are at 16.111 degrees today; I have only worn a sweater a few times this winter. We are expecting temps to drop for the next two weeks so maybe I can wear the sweaters and coats that I love. 😁

    1. Different parts of the world, different weather and temperatures. I am always surpised that women from Austrialia and South Africa follow my blog too as they are in opposite seasons. Hope you will enjoy your sweaters and coats.
