The good, the bad and the ugly outfits

Collage good, bad and ugly outfits
Collage of good, bad and ugly outfits

Something different this week, born out of necessity. My photo stock was nil and I needed to create a blog post. I decided to use some photos from the past to show you what I think is a good outfit, a bad outfit and an outfit I regard as ugly because I have never worn it again after having used it for a blog post.

I will show you an example of Good, then Bad and then Ugly and repeat it four times. There will be a link to the post in question with every photo.

GOOD

The combinations of the green with the orange and the striped top with the leopard boots are unusual for me and I love it. The trousers came with a marvellous blue sequined sweater, but I am proud I created another outfit with the trousers. Actually, I created several outfits with it. Not something I expected from such a bold item.

BAD

Bad because the combination of a very oversized sweater with wide leg trousers is disproportionately balanced. The colour scheme is all right for me, but the volume isn’t. It borders on ugly as I never wore this combination again.

UGLY

Ugly because again, just so voluminous. I do not seem to learn. I gave the shirt to Marjolein, hoping she could use it.

Wide jeans with a bright blue shirt

GOOD

Love this look. It is modern, arty and edgy, all in one outfit. Proportions are good. Proportions and combining different textures are things I am not good at but I nailed it this time.
Link to the original post.

BAD

I thought the trousers weren’t that wide and that by tucking in the top on one side, the proportions would be good. Too bad, it’s bad. I originally combined the trousers with a different blue top which was much better but too hot for that photo shoot day. You’ll find the right top in the post too if you click the link.

UGLY

It is such a nice dress which I styled really well the first time I featured it on the blog. But I really failed with this styling. The sandals are too heavy and the necklace is too high up and also too heavy. Never wore this outfit again. The sandals are great with wide jeans, the dress is great with elegant shoes and a dainty necklace, but the necklace (which I adore) is one I never use. I bought it without trying. Had I tried it before buying, I might have seen it is not flattering on me. (Who am I fooling? I was so in love with the necklace, I would never have been able to look at myself objectively.)

GOOD

A surprise outfit to me. The brooch was the starting point and it reminded me that orange and pink are good together. Putting that brooch on is murder by the way, but after I succeeded with that, I was really pleased with the outfit. Love the platform sandals with it.

Pink and orange brooch

 BAD

A case of proportions again. Gosh, when skinny jeans were still the fashion, I never got it wrong so often.
Link to the original post.

UGLY

As soon as I saw the photos, I knew what a mistake this outfit was. The skirt was in the sale and not my usual style or fabric, but I thought I’d give it a try. The fabric however, was clingy and enlarged my belly. I tried to elongate my short upper body by putting the belt of the dress (yes, I am wearing a dress as a shirt) on the waistband of the skirt. Not too successful. I like the combination of the colours, but right after I published the post, I gave away the skirt.
Link to the original post.

GOOD

Again, an outfit created by accident and one I love. In the post I also wore these trousers with a black and white blazer, which I also like a lot. The outfits created by accident are usually my best ones. With ‘by accident’ I mean that I am wearing something, not intentionally combined with another item which I put on for whatever reason, then I look in the mirror and think “Hey…that’s nice”.
Link to original post.

BAD

Knowing that orange and pink go together well, I combined these two items. What went wrong? I find the polo not working for me, it makes me look masculine as does the belt in this outfit. Furthermore, the top of the trousers isn’t flattering when I don’t wear it with a longer top tucked in at the front and draped over both hips.
Link to the original post.

UGLY

It was a second-hand dress and I thought I scored big. Then I saw the photos and it was bye bye dress; make someone else happy. The colour isn’t flattering, the fabric is cheap and that belt, although I love it, makes my short upper body even shorter. In the original post I am also wearing the dress with a smaller black belt and black boots which is a bit better, but not enough to keep the dress.
Link to the original post.

GOOD

Love, love, love this outfit. It is a Max Mara Studio dress which means high end. I bought it in the Max Mara outlet in Turin (oh happy days) for a fraction of the original price. What bothered me in the beginning was the fact it is a winter dress, but with those short sleeves I was always cold. Then I came up with the burgundy top underneath it, thick burgundy tights (of which the crotch always drops halfway through the day; sounds familiar?) and burgundy boots. The colourful earrings are the finishing touch.
Link to original post.

BAD

Not too awful but still not good. These trousers need a blazer. With this rather fitted top a bulging stomach and belly show on my side profile. Alas, the body changes with age.
Link to original post.

UGLY

When I saw this dress, I thought it ticked all my boxes. Fun and long sleeves, V-neck to divert the eye from the ample bosom, long and swooshy skirt and a great shade of green. Alas, I felt totally overwhelmed by the dress; as if I disappeared in it and you only saw the dress. Were the boots a mistake? I don’t know, but my bloggy friend Sheila (blog Ephemera), all the way in Canada received the dress and it looks good on her. Just goes to show.

What happened in my life this week

We celebrated Nicky’s 40th birthday at their house, Nicky being Ron’s daughter and my bonus daughter for those who don’t know. Some friends of her came over and her husband Randolf was up at the wee hours the day before, to decorate the house for her. It was a true birthday.

I managed to do a photo shoot with Marjolein so next week you’ll get a regular post. We did what we are so good at, we shopped and I shouldn’t go into clothes shops as my resistance is low. I don’t want to buy anything at the moment, I want to save some money. But I came home with a jumper and a jean jacket. I don’t own any jean jacket but I do have many jumpers. I am covering my head in shame.

Below: Marjolein at home with her very cuddly cat Bella.

Below: One of my comfortable outfits last week. Purple jumper, jeans and a big shiny fox brooch.

Purple jumper with jeans and a big brooch

Below: In case you forgot, it is this brooch. It definitely needs a background with ‘no noise’. Being heavy it also works better on a big jumper than on a summer shirt.

On the day of New Year’s Eve I met Selma for lunch, coffee, a chat and a visit to a museum. She was also going to take photos of my outfit to replenish my stock. We started with the first three and by the time we headed out to take photos on our way to the museum, it rained. So we took the photos in the museum and they are of bad quality. Sorry my dear readers, it is nasty weather and I am a blogger with no means.

At the end of the afternoon one of our neighbours from across the road came for a drink together with her visiting friend. The rest of New Year’s Eve Ron and I spent together, just the two of us. A sure sign that we have gotten old is that we both went to bed at eleven o’clock with a sleeping pill in order to sleep through the noise of the fireworks. Which worked beautifully. We didn’t hear a thing. Dog and cat were all right.

New Year’s Day was also a quiet day. Poor Ron had a terrible cold so we cancelled visiting Georg and Marla as we had planned.

On Friday we did go to Nicky and Randolf and the granddaughters as they said “These kids bring home germs from day care all the time. A cold is no problem.”

Let’s hope 2026 is going to be a good year.

  1. Love this post. Great idea! And it was interesting to harken back to the original posts, most of which I remembered. My very favorite outfit in this blog – and back when originally posted – was the pink slacks and large shoulder broach. But I agree with others that you are too hard on yourself. I really liked both the green crushed velvet dress with the wide belt, as well as the Boden print one. In the end, we must be comfortable with the look we are in because, at least for me, it can change the whole attitude of the day. Also so interesting to see how generally unflattering the oversized tops and bottoms are when paired. A good lesson. Happy New Year and I am looking forward to another year of outfits, friends and interesting buildings! 🙂

  2. What a fun post!
I keep thinking that I look great in voluminous wide leg pants but alas..
They are hard to style.. like you I struggle with proportion.. not too tight but not being swamped in fabric.
Thanks for lots of fun reading your summation of your outfits.

  3. Fascinating exercise which I may well replicate (with a credit and link to you). Some of your bad and ugly choices show how unflattering oversize is on most women. My two favourites are the pink trousers and brooch, and the blue trousers with pink jacket and silver boots. Both pinned. A good reminder how stylish narrow trousers can be! I guess it’s all about proportions. I can’t be bothered with the one-thirds rule but rely on my eyes, and sometimes get it wrong.

    1. Always nice to get a shout-out. We all inspire each other right? Oversized tops with skinny jeans or even boyfriend jeans (mid rise!) always looked so good on me. High rise wide leg trousers are much more difficult for me as I have a short upper body and a bit of a bulging stomach, so tight tops which look good with wide leg trousers are a No-No for me.
You keep on relying on your eyes dear.

  4. Have you noticed that all your ” good ” outfits include a simple boat necked top, and all your ” bad” outfits have shirt style necklines?
Ps I love your green dress on the train lines, so will agree to disagree!
    Happy 2026!

    1. No Petra, I had not noticed that at all. How observant. I know I can do shirt style necklines as I also have ‘good ones’ with that, but it is something I am going to investigate. Interesting.
Feel free to disagree about the green paisley dress. No need to always compliment me or agree with me. I am Dutch, we are brutally honest to each other. Wishing you a Happy New Year too.

  5. My favorite outfit is the one with the pink blazer! That color is marvelous for you and one can notice you feel very well in that combo. As next the first outfit with orange trousers, you really have the perfect long legs for wide pants. I also love your outfit with the brooch and your so called arty edgy ensemble.
What a lovely photo of Marjolein!
I wish you and your husband ( and Marjolein) a happy and healthy New Year. And maybe our steps cross again somewhere…

    1. Thank you Marlies, glad you like my Good ones too. As for the photo of Marjolein, I had taken one of her during a photo shoot which I wanted to put in the post, but when she sent me this photo with her cat, it was so much better. So I used that one.
And by the way…of course, you are welcome to comment, but as you never have before, I hope you are not commenting because you think you have to, now that we have met in real life. No need for that. Just do it when you want to.
Wishing you a Happy New Year too.

  6. I enjoyed looking at your good and bad outfits, although I agree you are too hard on yourself. My favourite outfit is the Max Mara one, which I too love, love, love.

That photo of Marjolein and Bella is so sweet.

Happy New Year to you and Ron.

    1. And a very Happy New Year to you too Cynthia, and to your loved ones.
I have to say that all the good ones are fighting for first place in my mind. And I might be hard on myself, but if you know you can do better, then why not do so, right? But I do show the photos of outfits I don’t like in hindsight.
I took a photo of Marjolein during one of our photo shoots and then she sent me this photo which was so much better and sweeter.

Happy new year to you, Ron and Watson!
Got it right this time 🙂
I have all the same problems as you as we are body twins, so I’m always learning how to do better
Look forward to another year of blogs

    1. I so wished I could find a blog with a body twin and the same taste in clothes. Also to learn from. Happy New Year to you, my Australian friend (it is you, isn’t it?).

  8. Hello, You

Your edgy outfit and the one featuring pink trousers tie for first place for me. I wouldn’t presume to choose which ones aren’t so kind on you, you’ve done that already, but I still get surprised at how difficult you find mixing and matching separates. How can you not do this? Just lay different tops and bottoms out and then, play! On the credit side your photos are always top notch!

Happy New Year, to you and Ron,!
    Gee

    1. Oh, I do lay out different tops and bottoms but bear in mind that I have a lot and I mean A LOT of clothes. I cannot lay them all out. Usually I work out an outfit in my head, thinking it will be great. Then I put the items on, look in the mirror and say to myself “WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?” Despite the fact I started this blog to talk about outfits, I am just not a natural stylist. Far from it. I only have a big passion for clothes.
Happy New Year to you too.

An interesting examination of fashion highs and lows. My favorite–the pink and orange with the great brooch on your shoulder, though I like many others. Happy New Year and my best wishes.

    1. Glad you agree with my ‘Good ones’. And yes, the pink and orange one was a great find. I was proud of myself.
Happy New Year to you too and thank you for being such a loyal reader.

  10. You look wonderful in bright pink! It really is a great colour for you. I also like your green striped top with the orange pants. Happy New Year!

    1. Thanks Alice. Yes the good outfits are really good, aren’t they. Very pleased with them.
Happy New Year to you too. Thanks for being a loyal reader.

  11. Happy New Year from a rather soggy Southern California. If I got to vote for the “best” of the good photos, I would pick the third example of good showing pink and orange with the gorgeous pink brooch that gave you such trouble to pin–the outcome was well worth the effort. The picture is stunning! You look so natural and relaxed and very happy–perhaps you are joyful having triumphed over the challenge of affixing the brooch?

    1. Linda Henderson Avatar

      Agree

    2. I have no idea Patricia. I do know that my husband was the photographer. I think I was just pleased with the background and the photo turned out to be really good. To think I hardly ever wear those sandals. The tan colour of the leather is another ‘orange’ in my outfit.

What a great idea for a post! I think we all do the same thing occasionally…out we go for the day, initially feeling good and likely confident about an outfit, only to find the actual wearing of it falls short of expectations. Perhaps something doesn’t fit right, or the combination seems too loud, or maybe the wind pulls something the wrong way …like a shawl…so that it doesn’t constantly requires adjusting. All learning experiences… just like some of your examples that for whatever reason you won’t be wearing as that combination again. Some I do like on you, but you have to feel it works.
I really enjoyed all of my little meals I hosted around my table over these past three weeks, however I will share a complete ‘twit moment’ with you… like some people the timing of Christmas in the middle of of the week, and perhaps lack of subsequent calendar checks, led me to prepare a lovely gluten and lactose free lunch for a neighbour ( not easy to do!) yesterday for noon.
As the time came and went, and wondering where she was, and sending a later text enquiring about her absence, I felt rather slighted. I needed to achieve something, so drove to drop off bottles for recycling at a local Rotary site. Wondering why there was no one collecting bottles, I had the sudden realization that it was not actually Saturday, the day of the lunch ! I quickly texted her about my complete mix up.
So this morning I will be ready for a good visit and a lot less prep to do ! And yes, off to do the bottle recycling for Rotary too! 2026 Calendars are out and now being checked !

    1. Oh this is a classic one for retired people. We don’t live by agendas anymore and having Christmas right in the middle of the week messes with our brain even more. Luckily you were a day early (I think). I have experienced a mix-up like that one or perhaps even twice. Where I invited friends for dinner and totally forgot about it. They were at my door and I wasn’t home. They even brought me flowers. The shame!

  13. The Max Mara outfit is magnificent! It’s a great inspiration for us because the general proportions and coloring coordination can be used with things already in our closets.

This is a much appreciated New Year’s edition (although I wait eagerly for the usual photos of local architecture).

    1. Thanks Sue, I hoped you would regard the post like this. I didn’t want to just show a few examples of 2025. I thought this was better and you confirmed my feeling. Don’t worry, next week will be with local architecture.

  14. Happy New Year Greetje!

I agree with all of your judgements except the crushed green velvet dress. I quite like that one but if you don’t feel good in it that’s what counts.

    Suzanne

    1. I agree Suzanne, the way you feel about your outfit transpires. And I really did not feel good about myself in it.

  15. Greetje, I think you’re too hard on yourself. 😉 But I do agree about all of the good outfits, and how sometimes those “accidental” combinations turn out to be the best ones.

The best to you and your family in 2026, and I’m still hoping to visit later in the year…

    1. I so want ALL my outfits to be good, but I’ll never achieve that. I console myself with the thought there are no highs without lows. Hope you will indeed be able to visit in 2026.

  16. You are dead right Greetje, the good outfits are superb. Happy New Year! Rgds

    1. Glad you agree with me Lise. Of course, it is all in the eye of the beholder, all subject to everybody’s own taste.
Wishing you a Happy New Year too.

This is the kind of blog I really LOVE –showing how you (or we) put together outfits in real life. I completely agree with 90 percent of your judgments and it’s really fun to share them.

The only one I disagree with is the lovely pale green crushed velvet dress; I think the only problem there is the belt. (Would you be able to wear the dress beltless? I couldn’t do this any more myself, as the dress would cling too closely to my torso, and as you point out one’s shape changes over time and I’m ten years ahead of you).

One other point I’d like to make is that one’s colouring also becomes less intense over time, and that is why imo vivid colours such as your emerald print dress and even your violet Xmas jumper make you look rather pale. You look so good in colours like orange and gold which I often find difficult – I’d say you are a ‘Spring’ colour type. But even as a ‘Winter’ colour type myself, I’m finding that strong emeralds and purples i used to adore tend to wash me out a little nowadays.

My hope is not to fade into just wearing quiet blues/greens/greys which are so much less trouble! I don’t always succeed so your blog is a way of keeping me alert and enjoying clothes that are bold and fun.

    1. It could very well be that the violet/purple jumper makes me look a bit paler but I still think it is a good colour for me. Just like orange and yellow. Black and white however, is too harsh for me but I keep wearing it haha. It is such a classic combination without being classic. If I could, I would wear moss green with cream instead, both with a hint of yellow in them. But that sort of green is so hard to find. Retailers don’t like green and if green is in fashion, it is always the wrong green for me, like emerald or tale (far too much blue in them). Just bought a bright pink jumper which is a very good colour for me. It certainly prevents me from fading into the background haha. You’ll see it in two weeks.

  18. I must just say that your first “bad” outfit – brown jumper, cream trousers and orange boots is fantastic- i really like that look and think you look great in it. Don’t write it off. You have such high standards and such a good eye, but I think you were too hard on yourself on that occasion. Thank you so much for all your blogs. I don’t often comment but love your work and style.

    1. I admit that I am my worst critic. Even though I think I am a fairly confident person, I still often doubt my outfits. And I certainly doubt that I have a good eye for either outfits or photography. I do however, learned a lot in the 13 years of blogging so it won’t be all bad. Thank you for reading my posts and don’t worry about not commenting often. I know you are there.

    2. Happy New Year, Greetje! I hope that it is lovely and healthy! I love the accidental outfits. You look wonderful, no matter what!

      1. Haha, thank you Kathleen sweet compliment but that is not true. Happy New Year to you too.
