These jeans are the second pair I bought last month, together with the baggy ones. I like this style and I am tall, so no problem. As they are high-waisted, I combined them with a red and cream striped top, completely tucked in. The top was already in my wardrobe for at least a year. I bought it specifically for wide jeans, only realising afterwards that the jeans needed to be wide at the hips as well and not just at the hem.
The red belt is to elongate my short upper body and the boots are a favourite pair of Fly London. I can wear the jeans long with high heels, turn them up a bit as I did in this post or turn them up much more with flat shoes. It all looks stylish.
There is only one inconvenience to these barrel jeans. Because they are high-waisted and I use a tight belt, they are no longer comfortable in the evening after dinner. So I either then change into something more comfortable or I open the fly and the button (charming sight as you can imagine).
Below: My friend Lia was my photographer and we were in a town called Maassluis. I would call it a village because of its size (small) but apparently in February 1814 it got the right to call itself a town. You can read more about Maassluis if you click the link.
Below: I admit, it is an old town with some beautiful buildings, bridges and such but not as many as for instance Amsterdam or Delft to name only two.
Below: We took a few photos and then had coffee in a nearby restaurant (Monsieur Paul).
Below: Lia in front of the restaurant. She is the sweetest woman and my friend since we were 16. This is her natural hair colour. No grey hair… How is that possible?
Below: After drinking our coffee, we left my coat and tote at the restaurant and headed out again for some more photos before it would start to rain.
I think this is a particularly cute photo. Usually I don’t look like this LOL.
Below: The jeans don’t even look too bad at the back, giving my hips a bit more shape because of the barrel cut.
Below: Not too bad from the side either, as in not too much belly showing.
Below: We discovered steps and doors. I am laughing because of the comment of someone passing.
Below: Close-up so you can see the earrings by Lara Design.
We decided to photograph doors instead of buildings. If you get bored, just scroll further down.
Below: Lia with the camera, demonstrating how low this front door is by standing next to it.
Below: Door number 2 with fish carved out (in the green part).
Below: Two doors with interesting glass and an ornament above. Looking at the brickwork on both sides of the door and the arch above them, I wonder whether this has been 1 door/house in the old days. Big old houses were often split into two houses in later days.
Ron discovered there is no letterbox on the left door, so perhaps the people who live there now, have reunited the split houses and made it one again.
Below: A more modern door but still old with stained glass above it.
Below: A door with squares, diamond and rectangles. In the middle you can see small bars. That means there is a little window behind it, which you can open to see who is at the door without actually opening the door.
Below: Magnificent door made in two parts with a light in the window above. Such a shame they haven’t maintained it well.
We got back to the restaurant quickly and were in time to avoid another rain shower.
Below: Later, as we headed back to Lia’s house, it was dry again and we took photos of my spring (autumn?) jacket. You saw it before in this post (scroll down a bit).
Below: As I said in spring, I had the tailor add another button and buttonhole at the top, much warmer for a bike ride.
Below: The back of the jacket. I suppose the jacket looks best over slim leg trousers but I don’t think it looks too bad over these barrel jeans either.
The creases are from sitting on the jacket in the car. I should have taken it off.
What happened in my life this week
On Saturday Ron and I planned to prepare our trip to Paris for 4 days, leaving Tuesday. Do you know the story of those people who went to Paris? They didn’t.
Ron had a serious cold, I had dizzy spells and our dogsitter was ill as well, so we just postponed the train fares, cancelled the hotel and eased back. We will try again in March.
Ron and I are fine again but our dogsitter is still ill, poor woman.
I received digital copies of old photos, found in my mum’s box with photos and would like to share them with you.
Below: My father (on the right), his brother and two sisters. Too cute. I think my father is wearing sock-suspenders.
Below: Mum and dad in 1950 on holiday by the sea. Dad was 34 and mum was 22. Even more adorable than the photo above.
Below: I saw my friend Katrien who was over from South Africa. She managed to squeeze in a lot of appointments with family and friends in the short period she was here. Glad to have been one of them. Sweet, kind and very intelligent woman. She takes the most incredible photos, especially when she is in SA. Here is the link to her Instagram account.
Below: When Katrien and I met, it was a real outing for me, so I dressed up. Wearing my red suit with tigers. (Link to original post.)
Had a day with many financial shenanigans but Loes came for coffee which brought some fun to the day.
Below: Vague photo of Loes (my fault), I checked the photo without my reading glasses on…
Marcella and I met up for coffee. She was wearing a new design earrings and greedy as I am, I asked her to leave the earring with me as I wanted to buy them LOL. You will see them in a couple of weeks.
Below: Doesn’t she look splendid?
Ron’s creative juices flowed again. He thought up a story for our granddaughter Zoë’s birthday. He made little figures and took photos of them to create a booklet.
I did the technical part, downloaded the photos and placed them in a digital album to be printed as a little booklet. Some simple text and it was done (late in the evening).
Below: Here are two characters from the booklet, Cat (with balloons and a cake) and Little Brush (doing the decorating).
Marjolein and I roamed the city of The Hague once again to document a skirt for the blog. And have fun of course. I took so much with me that I had to carry quite a lot of weight walking through town. Marjolein offered to carry some too, but I was balanced with equal weight on both sides. Seemed better. Besides, it’s my stuff, I decide to bring it, she shouldn’t be bothered with it.

How fun to see the photos of your Mom and Dad! Thanks for sharing. I like the way you style the barrel jeans, just don’t think they are for me. You and your friends are lovely and Ron is amazing!
As with every garment, with jeans you have to find out what suits you, what flatters you and what do you like. I think you only learn that by trying many on. A tedious journey, but it pays off.
So many nice compliments. Thank you Linda. Much appreciated.
So lovely to see the photos of your mum and dad. I think that’s the first time I’ve seen someone wearing a bowtie in the ocean!
My father was quite debonair in his twenties and thirties. The suit he is wearing in the sea cost more than a month wages and they didn’t have money to throw in those days. Later in life he didn’t spend much on clothes anymore, but he always looked smart. He was a carpenter and when he got home from work, he took a shower and changed into smart trousers, shirt and tie. No wonder his daughter got so hung up on clothes haha. It’s in my blood.
Hi Greetje
You look great in those jeans… they make your legs look endless
I like the red stripes with the denim… .just what I’m wearing at the moment
Great minds think alike Sandy. Isn’t it funny that such wide, oddly shaped jeans can make your legs look endless? I am grateful for it.
Your tiger pantsuit is one of my favourites, and, once again, you look so chic in it!
I love looking at old doors too. Such craftsmanship and artistry are involved in these examples.
My tiger suit is a big, big favourite of mine as well. So easy to put on, doesn’t crease and has maximum effect. The only thing is, I have to wear high heels with it (in my opinion), which isn’t really comfortable.
Because all those doors were next to each other I got the idea to show them instead of buildings.
I love all the photos and all your outfits. Its fun to see all the sights especially all those old unique doors. I could never wear the barrel jeans as I am short 5ft 4″ and would look totally lost in them but they are perfect for you. I love the little book Ron designed quite engenious. To bad about your trip to Paris I haven’t been there for many years and I suppose alot has changed something to look forward to in the spring. It’s getting a little chilly now here in Canada but at least my hanging plants are still blooming. Will be waiting for the next post.
I was worried I had overdone it again with the number of photos but I remembered one reader telling me: “Post as many photos as you want as long as the background is different”.
Ron and I were quite pleased with the booklet. We worked together without snapping at each other for a change. Call the papers.
I don’t think Paris has changed much, it never does, really. We’ve been there a couple of years ago and many times before that. Let’s just hope the weather is good in spring.
The temperatures here are going up but there is also rain. We are used to it.
The doors were marvelous. and thank you for sharing the photos. Your outfit was lovely –those jeans would be so unflattering to most “women of our age” but you look terrific.
It’s knowing what suits your body shape. Believe me, it took me a couple of years to figure everything out, but I got it now.LOL
I bought a top that is very similar to yours last spring, but I haven’t worn it very often. I’m not sure why, but now you have inspired me to try it again.
I love the door photos! Most doors here are quite boring, but I remember walking around the town where our friends live in Mexico taking pictures of doors because each one was so beautiful and unique.
So sorry that your trip had to be postponed, but glad that you’re both feeling better.
I hadn’t worn my top either and it had been in my wardrobe for quite some time. Apparently it was waiting for the right garment to combine it with. Glad I found use for it as I also bought it in cream with black.
Love the jeans. I am also tall, so…. Also I broke my leg last months so always on the lookout for wide legs. Your T is perfect. You must have a smaller belly than mine-I wouldn’t dare tuck anything in.
With a broken leg (and plaster?) I think you need trousers which are wide at the hem, although…perhaps not. These are from denham.com. They ship to the USA, perhaps as well to Canada?
I don’t have much of a belly but I certainly do have one. It depends very much on how the trousers are cut, whether it shows or not. I can never predict that before trying them on.
These barrel jeans really suit you, Greetje. I’m not surprised you went over your shopping limit, when these are in style , you’ve got to pick them up.
I love all the pictures of the doors. What a fun thing to document. So sorry your trip had to be cancelled, but better to be not sick.
I think it is the month of September that pushed me over my shopping limit. It’s the month I always go overboard.
The doors were all next to each other, which gave me the idea.
We were both better by the time we would have had to leave for Paris but you cannot wait until the last moment. You’d lose your money. And besides, the dog sitter is still ill so it was a no-go anyway.
Very cute outfit – you look great! Love all the door and friend photos too.
As a retired school librarian, I think you and Ron should go into the children’s book business with a series about Cat and Little Brush (and maybe the parrot too).
Wouldn’t we love doing that but I think that one booklet does not make a library yet haha. No idea how our granddaughter is going to react either. We will see next week.
I loved seeing you in the dragon suit! Very nice!
My grandmother was from Sneek, so I enjoy seeing places you visit.
Funny you should say dragon suit. I can see why you think that but they are actually tigers in black and white.
Sneek is in the north of the Netherlands and they have their own language as you probably know. I still think it is funny that in a small country like ours, there can be so many differences.
Oh, that style of jeans would not work for me. I am too short waisted and wide hips, I would look like a cow! But they are nice on you, most things look great on tall people! lol. The cities you visit are so interesting and attractive. The quaintness of these cities is certainly lacking in the U.S. where I live!
We all have to dress to what suits our body shape best. I am the opposite from you apparently. Funny that you should follow my blog. Perhaps not because of the clothes but because of the scenery?
I love the jeans, and how you’ve styled them here. Such interesting doors! I’m especially impressed with the fish carving.
I’m so sorry you’ve had to postpone you Paris trip, but better to go when everyone’s healthy. Fingers crossed…
Ron is so creative! What a clever idea for your granddaughter.
Glad you like everything. Ron is indeed very creative, he thinks differently than most people and comes up with good solutions.
It was a shame having to postpone Paris as the weather would have been good this week. Now we are going in March…weather wise not the best time.
I love this jeans outfit Greetje! They look good with your Spring/Autumn jacket too. Sometimes over-sized + over-sized can work. I love a good striped top. Yours is very stylish. Lia’s denim outfit appeals to me alot. You both look so youthful. I have a friend in her 60’s without a grey hair either! You family pics are lovely, thanks for sharing. I can see you Mom clearly in her 22 year old self IYKWIM. Her cute face is very distinctive.
I agree, sometimes oversized + oversized works, but not all the time.
My mum was a beauty when she was young and her face was more wide than long, which she kept through the years.
I think you look great in cream and red, and the barrel jeans are relaxed but very stylish.
When I see old photos I’m always interested to see what different ages have looked like at different times. For instance my son is 31 and doesn’t look anything like your dad at 34. It seems that in times gone by adults looked somehow “older” than now ?
I agree with your observation, barrel jeans can be relaxed and stylish at the same time.
People looked older back then because they dressed more formally (my dad is wearing a suit) and there hair is cut in a style we are not used to. But perhaps they also aged quicker.
