A while back both Marjolein and I bought the same brown jumper while bumping into Marlies, a reader of my blog who recognised us. I styled it straight away and saw that this outfit made me look quite slender.
So (drumroll), I present you my black flared trousers with a brown jumper.

In the old days the combination of brown with black was a no-go. Just like green with blue. These days those rules have gone out of the window.

Marjolein came to Haarlem as I didn’t have enough free hours in the day to travel with all the dog walking. She wore the same jumper, allowing you to see two ways of styling. I added my oversized pink brooch and wore my leopard skin boots.

Below: Marjolein wearing the same jumper with jeans (that fly is designed to be diagonal). She added a blue and white striped shirt and bronze boots. I immediately fell in love with this combination and especially with the innovative way she pinned her brooch.

Long black gloves

I cannot remember what I said as I laid my hand there but it must have been something like “I can imagine, as it is the closest point to the camera” haha.

It was a fun day with lots of chatting, very little shopping and enjoying a day with sunshine and no rain.

What happened in my life this week

A few revelations, that’s what happened this week.

The dog walking is still going strong and has even been increased as our neighbours who often (nearly every day) took dog Watson to the park together with their own dogs, are on holiday for a week. So, two shifts of an hour for me instead of one.

On Sunday I had a bad day. It started to snow at the end of the afternoon as I took Watson for his second big walk. At first it wasn’t too bad but when the snow got really heavy, I decided to call it a day and head back to the car. AND I COULDN’T FIND THE CAR. This park was new to me, all trees looked alike and with the snow they looked even more alike. I walked around for half an hour, frantically trying to get my bearings with Google Maps on my phone. No gloves on (they were wet anyway), freezing. I felt a little panic which is silly really, as I am not living in a jungle, now am I? Finally, I found the car.
Revelation 1. It was sooo nice to be able to step into a warm house, roof over your head and comfort at your feet. I thought about people without a home, people in war situations and felt so deeply for them.

Below: This is a photo in full colour…It doesn’t look like heavy snow, but there was a lot of wind, making it icy cold.

Snow in the park

Then again there have been many days without rain and sometimes even with a bit of sunshine which makes dog walking quite agreeable. And while Watson is digging for mice, I can practise my pelvic floor exercises. I had stopped doing them three years ago and that was a bad idea. Really bad.
I have only started doing them again for a couple of weeks and already there is a result. Which means I have to do them for the rest of my life. Well, if that is what it takes, then that is what it takes.

Below: Snowdrops in the park. Spring is on its way. I cannot wait.

Snowdrops

Below: But it is wet enough for the fungus to grow as well.

Below: And this is what I looked like on Monday when dog walking. The gardeners had come early in the morning so I was rushed and forgot to put make-up on. Talking about reality haha.
As the garden is only small, it only took them a morning to prune and clip everything.

Me without make-up

Walking around all day in old clothes to take the dog out, hair looking like rope, makes me feel ugly. I now realise what grooming does to one’s mind. At least, to my mind. It makes me feel so much happier.

Revelation 2: We are very lucky with our neighbours in the street. Since Ron broke his wrist, we got a bunch of flowers, a full meal, served on plates, including wine and dessert, once a dish with vegan lasagna, then another dish with lasagna, a ‘survival box’ with goodies and a lot of help offered anyway. And of course, the dog walking neighbours. We are not ever going to move I think.
Having a street party every year is a great way for people to know one another. And apparently also to care.

I had one terrific day last week and that was the Saturday. I went to the town of Alkmaar with Sabine and Anke; together we are the Shopping Saturday group. It was wonderful weather and we were IN THE MOOD. Which means I have quite a credit card bill. We all did very well. You will see the day next week and the outfits some other day.

And another fun day was Sunday when daughter Nicky and granddaughter Zoë came to visit poor granddad. Son in law Randolf and granddaughter Evy had to stay at home as Evy had a bad case of chicken-pox. She is doing much better now.

Below: Zoë brought her doctor bag and is making grandpa better again.

Doctor Zoe making grandpa better again

Another funny granddaughter thing is that Zoë tells her parents with everything that gets broken “Grandma can fix this” haha.

Below: Two examples of things grandma had to fix. Miffy’s foot wasn’t a problem but the other thing…

So all in all, a tiring week but a good one. Ron is giving me compliments every day, even about my cooking. He said “I take back everything I have said in the past about your cooking”. He was always teasing me that I cannot cook. Victory. He is healing well, so just a few more weeks and we can go back to normal.

I am so glad to hear that Ron’s wrist is doing so much better. I bet you will be happy to be finished with all of the cooking, ha ha. Isn’t it amazing how people will rally around you when you really needed it?
Loved seeing you both in the same jumper! What a fun exercise. I really love that big red brooch.
Much love to you, my friend.

    1. Thanks for your kind words and compliments Sheila. And yes, it is truly amazing how people rally around me.
The brooch is bright pink by the way, not red.

  2. I love this sweater and the large floral embellishment that accompanies it; the outfit with the trousers is very balanced and beautiful. I also love the way Marjolein’s brooch is attached—very original. The kimono-style coat is gorgeous, and the scarf adds a lovely touch of color. Ron is so lucky to have such a wonderful doctor. And what can I say about your close-up without makeup that I don’t already repeat from the previous post? Well, I think it’s very, very appropriate in the superficial world that surrounds us.

    1. I agree Josep-Maria, we can all do with a bit of reality these days. The other time you saw a reality photo like this, was two posts ago, with the dog at the cold beach. I was wearing make-up in that one, but had a hood on.

  3. Dear Greetje,
I, too, once got lost in a local park because the snow made every path look the same! I wandered around for ages until I spotted 2 park workers who drove me back to my car!
Now I have a cell phone, lol! But I sure was frustrated with myself.
I love the brown and black and agree, it sure is slimming on you!

Good neighbours are great to have.

    1. Well, I did have a cell phone with me but I had failed to pay attention to the street name (which also appeared to be very long). Plus, you have to take your gloves off in order to work the phone. Sooo cold.

  4. No fear of fashion .- that is the right motto for your dear Greetje..especially wearing this flower broosh, never seen such accessoire. Yes, fashion rules- which colours match, which not – are dissapearing…even to my pleasure.
And once again such nice pics of these buildings.
Have a good time and all the best
    Violetta

    1. Thanks for your positive comment Violetta. And of course, for your compliments. I saw the brooch in a shop window of the brand MarcCain and was totally smitten.

  5. Hi Greetje,
Such a lovely outfit….love, love the BEAUTIFUL coat, scarf and leather gloves! You both styled the sweater so well, and the flower brooch = a perfect addition. Your photography skills in the city (and the woods!) bring those highly detailed buildings to life. I always enjoy your blog, and this one was exceptional! Thanks for sharing your week with us. 💗

    1. Brown with black may be an accepted combination these days, but I found it rather dark. Hence the brooch.
Oh gosh, this post was exceptional? I never know in advance what my readers will think of a post. It is much like a new song. You never know whether it will become a hit.

  6. I always enjoy reading all your blogs they are so interesting. I especially love all the pictures as well with all the different buildings and towns you visit. I really love your flower pin, I love pins as well and have quite a few, some are antiques from my grandmother, great grandmother and great aunt. I’m not sure how valuable they are I suppose I should get them checked out. Both yours and Marjolens outfits are beautiful two completely different looks. I’m so glad Ron is on the mend, I’m sure with your doctor grandaughters help he’ll be fine in no time. Keep bloging and I’ll keep reading.

    1. You must have some pretty beautiful pins if they have been in your family that long. On the British Antiquea Roadshow, you often see people showing jewellery from their mother, grandmother or great grandmother. Some of them are worth a fortune. I find it difficult to have a shop value such things. You never know whether they are cheating you. You want a truly independant expert.
Thank you for reading my blog posts and your promise to keep on reading.

  7. Now that we have seen your before and after photos you will have to share all of your makeup tricks with us.

    1. I am sorry Linda, I do not have any make-up tricks. Even worse, I don’t have any interest in beauty products. Once someone applies a make-up on my face and I like it, I will stick to it for at least 7 years. My Sensai Highlighting Concealer is my best friend. I cover the circles under my eyes with it and the many dark spots in my face due to sun damage. It is expensive but brilliant. I then cover everything with Guerlain Terracotta powder (a bronzing powder) and put a bit of Estée Lauder Pure Color Envy blush on my cheekbones. Furthermore I have a little pencil for a line underneath my eyes and Ellis Faas creamy eyes (eye shadow) on my eyelids, finished off with mascara. That’s it.

  8. I love your outfit! I can’t decide which part I like best; the sweater, the pants, or the flower pin. Together it is lovely. I also like how you showed Marjolein wearing the same sweater. I think this brown sweater is a very versatile piece that you both will enjoy wearing and styling in many different ways.

Dr Zoe is so cute attending to her patient. 🙂 I’m glad Ron is healing well.

    1. Thanks Ginger. I did well then. Always good to hear. Marjolein and I thought you would like to see the jumper styled in two different ways. I don’t know whether we will enjoy it for a long time. It seems to be pilling pretty fast.

  9. Both outfits look good and well represent your individual styles. I particularly like your pairing of brown sweater and black pants-very on point. And Marjolein’s jewelry is quite lovely. I have a bunch of brooches and need to work them into rotation. Note to Marjolein, go back and get the hat. It looks great on you.

    1. Brooches are having their moment now, so, yes, get them out and use them.
Marjolein had a hat like this when she was younger, she even sold them. It was a matter of “been there, done that”.

  10. This was a fun read. I liked your outfit and Marjolein’s. both very different styles. Nice to hear that Ron is enjoying your cooking. We sometimes take our homes for granted; there are so many people without and going through so much.

    1. When I was young I never thought about homeless people or war or abuse or any of those bad things. With growing older I came to realize that most people in the world are in an awful situation. More than people like me, in my comfortable bubble. So unfair.

  11. My first reaction when I saw this week’s outfit was how svelte you look in it! So tall and slim. Love the brooch so much, and Also love how Marjolein styled her brown sweater.
The photo you took in the woods in the snow is amazing—so moody and mysterious. I can see why you got lost and felt a bit panicky. This looks like you are in a forest somewhere in the wild.
So glad you and Ron have kind neighbours, and that you can still get out with friends. So important to get a respite.

    1. What a lovely word…svelte. I was quite surprised myself when I combined these trousers with the jumper and looked in the mirror. I even said WOW.
Thanks for your comment on the snow photo. I was afraid it was boring. The fact that I was so cold with wet cloves and I had to pee, increased the panic, I think.
Our neighbours are worth their weight in gold. Hurray for the street parties and the fact they care.
But there is light at the end of the tunnel. I hope his recovery will be fast after the plaster is off.

  12. Great outfit…and you’re so right about pushing away the not mixing black and brown! It was wonderful!

    1. I have done the same with blue and green. Not mixing them was a rule too. I still have a struggle not to be too matchy matchy. I love it that I have so many items that I CAN do matchy matchy. When I was young I didn’t have the money for that.

  13. Lovely sweater it looks perfect on both of you. Such good pairings with the black pants in your case and the striped shirt in Marjolein‘s case. Yes, we are lucky and it’s good to realize that. Wonderful “doctoring” of grandpa Ron. It’s good that he’s on the mend. I’m sure it’s a good cooking that’s making him heal so quickly.

    1. I doubt that very much haha. My cooking consists of vegetables, potatoes and meat (or fish). Nothing exciting, but I do cook this pretty tasty. He is appreciating it, that’s for sure.
I am getting loads of compliments. He knows which side his bread is buttered haha. Sometimes when we are in a bit of an argument I tell him: “Don’t provoke the monster”.

  14. Oh Greetje, I so relate to your feeling about people with no warm house to go to. Every night when I get into my comfortable bed I wish that life was more just!

And that everyone had brown sweaters like that!
Am also going to copy Marjolein’s pin. Splendid idea.

    1. The older I get, the more I think that this world is awful for most people. Just the few living in the bubble, like I do, have a good life. I cannot help everybody and I feel guilty about my comfortable life. With the world as it is now, I wonder how much longer my life will be comfortable. Luckily I have the ability to not worry about things that are outside of my circle of influence. Otherwise I’d go crazy.
Marjolein’s idea with the pin is so good. I already have been going through my stack of brooches. Some are too small, some are too wide but I bet I’ll find one.

  15. The scarf with your kimono style coat caught my eye. Love that look. After my Mom passed, I kept clothing, scarves, and decor items which please me so much.

    1. To tell you the truth, I wasn’t sure whether that scarf wasn’t a style clash with the rest of the outfit. But I so like a pop of colour near my face.
It is lovely to have little things you use or see which have been your mom’s, isn’t it? I have quite a few pieces of jewellery too. Every time I put it on, I think of her. Which I do a lot anyway.
Mom and dad are looking down on my from their photo frame near my computer.

  16. Love the brown sweater on both of you! Very nice cut! That brooch is marvellous. The day we met I bought a brown jacket with faux fur in the same store. You inspire me to wear it with an orange brooch I already have for years…
You are so elegant Greetje in that kimono coat! Very nice styled with those long leather gloves!
    Good neighbors are priceless.

    1. I couldn’t resist that brooch when I saw it in the window of a MarcCain shop. I originally bought it in green and decided a pink one was also needed (not haha).
That brown jacket with faux fur I remember well. Glad I was able to inspire you with the brooch. They have made a huge come-back.
As the kimono style coat has 3/4 sleeves, the long gloves are a necessity. I searched for quite a while until I found these.
I agree about neighbours. You know what they say: better a good neighbour than a far away friend.

  17. Loved every bit of your blog, but I completely identify with your “lost in the park” story. I lost my car in Ambleside Park (West Vancouver) last year. I knew it was in the Doggie Park part of the parking area but somehow I took a path leading to the other side of the large pond. So scary, and I had just recovered from a broken femur so painful too.One feels like one is “losing it”. (Maybe just a little)

    1. Ah…another woman who felt the panic. I think the panic was also brought on by the discomfort. You with your painful femur and me with my icy cold hands (and I had to pee).
Anyway, all is well that ends well.

  18. I have to say that you do look very slim in those trousers. Are they bootcut because I think that’s the style that slims me down. I love brown on you. Having nice neighbours is such a lovely thing. Mine are also nice and kind which is appreciated very much.

    1. No, the trousers are not bootcut but flared (at the bottom). Bootcut is a bit more straight at the bottom.
I have never considered brown on me but there is so much of it around that it creeped into my wardrobe.
We have a saying: better a good neighbour than a far friend.

  19. Great sweater and black/ brown combo with animal print i will steal!

    1. Steal whatever you like dear and call it inspiration haha. I do the same.

  20. Dr Zoe checking on her patient, Ron — priceless. I appreciate the vignettes of real life — no makeup dog walks, efforts to cook and caretake, granddaughter visits, good neighbors and friends.

    1. Our granddaughters are now at the most adorable age. Love it.
And thank you for mentioning the vignettes of real life (had to look up vignette; thanks for teaching me another word). As I was rambling on, I wondered what my readers would think of it. Boring? But no, well in any case, you liked it.

  21. Loved that outfit on you! And you are slim, in my opinion❤️ Marjolein has the best boots! Love them! Look forward to Saturdays and your email.

    1. I am tall and I have no hips and no bum. Together with the outfit of this week, that makes me look really slim. I also have outfits that make me look larger. I don’t mind, as long as I like it.

  22. Hi Greetje, I really enjoyed your post, having just signed up. I love your look with the brown jumper and black trousers. It seems at last I have found a blogger who is a similar shape to me! I find it really difficult to find clothes that aren’t boxy. I still have a waist (even if other bits have gone to pot!) Haarlem looks so pretty with all the old buildings.

    1. I am an inverted triangle shape: broad shoulders, no waist, big bosom, no hips, no bum. To tell you the truth I have a lot of boxy clothes too, but the trend is going towards more waist showing and peplum. Especially the last shape is ideal for me, so if I can lay my hands on a few items like that, I won’t hesitate.
Thanks for reading my post and to comment. I hope you will come back next week. Every Saturday there is a new post, come rain or come shine.

  23. Dear Greetje, I loved seeing how you and Marjolein styled the same sweater. Both equally lovely and super fun. Such inspiration!

    1. More examples of how to style an item is always a good thing, right?

  24. Haarlem must be a wonderfully civilized place. More cities need stores that promise to “turn men into gentlemen “.

    1. Hahaha, you are right. Gentlemen is what we want.
