Blue, white and orange outfit. Nearly King’s Day…

Blue, white and orange outfit

Two days before King’s Day I was in Amsterdam with my friend Aafke. Preparations for the big celebration of the King’s birthday were already going on. By accident I wore a blue, white and orange outfit, which would have been perfect for King’s Day. It was an outfit I had come up with not even thinking of this. Orange is one of my favourite colours, but it also happens to be the colour of our royals. The King is called Willem-Alexander van Oranje (=of Orange). Everybody dresses in blue, white, red (the flag colours) and/or orange on the 27th of April.

Amsterdam is crazy on King’s Day. In 2025 the fire brigade and ambulances couldn’t get through the crowds. The council of Amsterdam was successful in keeping it less busy this year which of course led to some grumbling. Understandable but necessary.

Below: A well-known café in the centre is called De Blaffende Vis (The Barking Fish) and every year, since about 30 years, they have a new decoration for King’s Day on their building. This is the one for 2026, our previous queen Beatrix (abbreviated to Bea) as a hippie.

Anyway, let’s go back to my day with Aafke. We headed to the ‘9 Straatjes’ (the 9 Streets) which is a lovely area of Amsterdam.

Below: Aafke took photos for my blog with my iPhone as I didn’t want to schlep my heavy camera with me all day. Not the best photos but I bet, you don’t care. The trousers are COS (as seen in this post and in this post and in this post. I am doing well with these trousers. The belt is Weekend Max Mara, the bag is Gianni Chiarini, the trainers Vic Matiė (years old) and the new earrings (orange with a golden button) Lara Design. Ron really liked this outfit.

On our way to the 9 Streets, we passed some amazing buildings.

Below: This must have been a warehouse in the old days. At the top of the building is a beam with a pulley and a rope, to hoist things up. A method still very much in use in Amsterdam, also for private homes.

Below: Magnificent.

Below: The old Dutch writing on the ground floor indicates that this used to be a tobacco store. Apparently it is now a rather good restaurant.

Beautiful old house in Amsterdam

Below: Next door we saw this very small house although not the smallest house in Amsterdam. In the old days home owners were taxed by the width of the house on the pavement.

We went in and out of shops the whole day. I was knackered when I came home.

Below: For some warmth I had put on my colourful Essentiel Antwerp jacket (such a good find). And see the green and white tote?

Blue, white and orange outfit

Below: As Aafke and I started to walk into Amsterdam, even before we had had coffee, we saw some nice totes for next to nothing hanging outside a shop. I bought this green one and Aafke has a cream one which you will see later. My perfect colour green with cream and gold, my ideal colour combination.

Green tote

Below: I took this photo later at home to show you the tote. By then, my hair had collapsed.

Below: OK, the quality of the photos is bad but as long as it tells the story, right? This is the entrance of the Pulizer hotel.

Below: I took a photo of Aafke here as well. Aafke is a bright and sweet woman with whom I can roar with laughter. I am so grateful for all these amazing women, whom I can call a friend.

Aafke

Below: Walking away from the 9 Streets into the ‘Jordaan’ (another lovely area of Amsterdam) we passed this canal. The restaurant on the left had a big terrace.

Canal in Amsterdam with terrace

Below: Close-up of the terrace. Isn’t it idyllic? The sun was out and it had gotten warm (when you were in the sun). That means everybody is out on a terrace. We Dutch know it usually never lasts very long so we want to make the most of it.

Below: Me and Aafke on the only available seats outside. All the terraces were packed and we wound up here, which was a strange little place. They served the cappuccino in paper cups and charged far less than other places. It turned out to be excellent coffee.
The tote which Aafke bought is on the white chair beside her; cream with gold.

Me and Aafke

Below: We continued to Noordermarkt. What a lovely houseboat this is. And then all that spring green on the trees and the sunshine. Such things, together with a good friend and laughter, bring me in a reckless (= spending) mood.

Beautiful houseboat in Amsterdam

Below: The green and cream bag together with these bangles and brooches didn’t break the bank. But I also bought a very bright checked summer blazer. It was heavily reduced in price and I love it, but you will have to wait until it is warmer and will be photographed for a blog post.

Little gem purchases

Below: At Noordermarkt this lady struck me. She looked so good and didn’t mind her photo being taken and put on my blog. Getting consent is so much easier in Amsterdam.

The bright blazer I mentioned, I bought on our way back to the station. It was in the outlet store of Margriet Nannings which means expensive designer stuff for a price I can afford.

A thoroughly enjoyable day with lots of laughter.

What happened in my life this week

Apart from my trip to Amsterdam with Aafke, the week was pretty quiet.

On the Sunday I didn’t want to do anything as I was still tired from walking all day Saturday. It was a warm day and for the first time this year, I was able to lie in the sun in the garden from 3.30 to 5 pm. Anticipating this, I hadn’t put any make-up on.

Below: Me with so/so hair and no make-up, wearing one of my new bracelets. The old jumper is bright pink, not red.

Outfit for at home

We didn’t go into town for King’s Day on Monday as we have done that so often, we know this by now. But if you are interested in what such a day is like, click for the post King’s Day 2014 (nice one) in Amsterdam and the post King’s Day 2018 in Haarlem.

I did wear the right colours that day though (below), but we went to the beach with the dog and sat on a terrace in the sun. Casual dressing was in order.

Below: Nicky and Randolf took the granddaughters to the tulip fields. Here is Evy.

Below: And here is Zoë. These fields attract so many tourists as you can imagine. The Keukenhof is a popular place to see the flowers.

Below: Here is a little blurry video of Nicky and the children in the tulip fields.

Because of my photographing the birds of prey last week, my camera had different settings. What to do? I was unhappy with the original settings and still far from an expert in camera settings. Trying to figure it out myself, I changed the settings and photographed a couple of my neighbours. I didn’t do too badly so the photos Marjolein and I took on the Wednesday, also in Amsterdam, are better. Still, my camera shop guy has to check and give me some pointers which will happen next Friday.

This Friday the weather was really good, it was like summertime, with lower temperatures in the morning of course. In the afternoon 19º C at sea and 22° C in Haarlem.

Below: We went to the beach with dog Watson in the morning and saw this abandoned cart. The text in the cart said: “Leave cart alone. Gone shrimp fishing in the sea. Thank you.”

The shrimp fisherman's cart

Below: Sure enough, a few minutes later we passed him. He was walking backwards, trawling a net. You can see the end of the net on the left, marked with an orange ball. Heavy work.

Man fishing for shrimps

Below: And as we headed back to the terrace, he was looking at his catch. He hated the two jelly fish as they hurt the shrimps so he threw them back in the sea. Most crabs walked back to the sea by themselves but he said he would help the rest, only taking the shrimps with him which would be a tiny sack full (his words.)

Shrimps

In the afternoon I lay in the sun in the garden for an hour. Great day.

I love the blue, orange combination, it looks great on you. What a crazy scene King’s Day is! Lovely pictures of the old buildings. Thank you so much for sharing the pictures of a tulips, wow, aren’t they gorgeous?

    1. You take things for granted of the place (country) where you live, don’t you. But through the comments of my readers, I am appreciating the Netherlands much more.

  2. Amsterdam is just so lovely when the sun shines. Looking forward to be back in June! (and the whole month of August 🙂 )

    1. Indeed, Amsterdam is lovely when the sun shines. And we both know that is not always the case. I love all the trees in Amsterdam too.
Looking forward to be seeing you again this summer.

  3. Greetje. This comment is not in response to this post.. but a few weeks ago you wore a gorgeous pair of shoes that made me smile. So.. I have now my own pair of mustard yellow sneakers.. second hand Campers. I think of them as my nofearoffashion shoes. When I had a dog, he was a big conversation starter with strangers on the street – well these Greetje inspired shoes seem to be having a similar impact. People look at my feet then smile at me and sometimes say “love your shoes!” Which is very strange for people in my part of Sydney Australia. I have been in a very neutral ‘coastal granny’s phase for a while, but thankyou for nudging me towards colour again. It is much more cheer inducing than always neutrals.

    1. I am honoured, flattered. You named your shoes after me! So glad I could inspire you and I hope you will definitely leave the costal granny’s phase. Colour and dressing to your liking instead of to assumed standards makes you so much happier. And as you have experienced, most people react positively on that. I get lots of compliments in the street too.

  4. I love your bold bright colours. We have a lot in common!
King’s Day looks fun. I wish we had one. Of course Charles was not around anyway last week, he was sorting out The Donald. Someone has to.
The tulips are fantastic. I adore tulips.
I don’t know if you participate in link-ups these days but why not give mine a go? The readers would love to see you.

    1. Apparently Charles did a great job of putting Trump subtly in his place with humour, pointing out that he is still the leader of Canada haha.
I never participate in link-ups anymore, but I will give yours a go. Why not.
And yes, we have the love for bold bright colours in common.

I hardly every choose orange in clothing but your blue, white, orange is very attractive. I enjoyed your photos in the city. It is so different from where I live. I was interested in your exchange with Josep, Here in the USA we are having No Kings rallies against the horrible Trump regime.

    1. Blue, white and red is more standard, I guess.
I know about the shenanigans in your country. I also know that it is no longer safe to criticize as you get punished for not agreeing. Who would ever have thought this possible in ‘the land of free’.

  6. The view of Amsterdam is impressive, and it’s curious how your fellow countrymen identify with the colors of the flag and the royal family. In my country, all of this sounds like corruption, archaism, and anti-democratic practices. It’s great that you have a different perspective; I suppose your king hasn’t given you as many reasons to reject him as ours has.
The white and blue outfit looks adorable, very well-balanced. I like your multicolored jacket. I’m always impressed by your good taste in selecting cityscapes; you know how much I love your country.

    1. Most people in the Netherlands like the royal family. They haven’t done that many wrong things (this century). Of course, there are people who think we spend far too much money on the monarchy as institution, but I dare say that our King and his wife (who everybody adores) do lots of good things. And Queen Beatrix before him as well. There isn’t much corruption in our country although wherever there is a lot of money, things happen which are not fair. The elite will take care of themselves very well. That has always been the case and it will always be like that. But most of the times we are a happy country with happy people. Although I will admit that we also have far too many people who are poor. We do have food banks and that shouldn’t be necessary in such a rich country. Wealth isn’t equally distributed.

        Nice reply.

        1. Thank you. Sometimes comments and replies go beyond.

  7. Living in the East Bay across from San Francisco in California, it has been cloudy the last few days. Your posts always remind me how similar our climates are. To see your sunny days in Amsterdam also reminds me that the sun will come out and it will be a beautiful day.

Thank you for the fashion, architecture and sharing your time with friends.

    1. And here am I thinking you have sunshine all year round in California. Mistake apparently.
No need to thank me. I thank you for reading it, commenting and appreciating my posts.

  8. Wonderful post. Love your outfit for Amsterdam! The photos brought back lovely memories of our trip in 2013. The Queen’s/Kings Day celebration was a surprise to us! Kind strangers explained the holiday, and we bought some orange regalia. . We stayed in Jordaan, a block from the canal side cafe that is so crowded in the photos. The crowds were joyful and friendly, enjoying the bands playing in many intersections.

    1. Yes, in 2013 as in 2014 King’s Day was crowded in Amsterdam, but this OK. Our 2014 celebration was great as you can see if you hit the link in the post.

  9. Greetje,

I enjoy your blog, you always post interesting photos, this week the tulip fields are amazing! As was your outfit for Kings Day celebration. In the US, we have No Kings days now…

    Nancy

    1. You made me laugh with your comments Nancy. Thanks for that. And for the compliments of course.

  10. For 25 years I lived near New York City (previously New Amsterdam) in a hamlet called Blauvelt next to another small town called Orangeburg which was near Orange County. No surprise that the area was settled by the Dutch in the early 1600s.

    1. Indeed, indeed, the Dutch did put their mark on the USA with New York. Brooklyn is also named after a Dutch city (Breukelen), Harlem after Haarlem and many more.

  11. Your blue, white, and orange outfit is so “Greetje!” Simple, but fun and eye-catching.

King’s Day looks like something I might have enjoyed in my younger years, but would probably avoid now, haha!

Always enjoy seeing the scenery near you, and am remembering our drive out to the beautiful tulip fields, one of the high points of my travels!

    1. Thank you Susan, I think you are right. Last week’s skirt was a little outing, something really out of the ordinary. But that is also a part of me.
King’s Day was the best when I was in my thirties, although 2014 was also great. Nowadays it is too crazy.
Really, was driving out to the tulip fields a high point? Gosh, one doesn’t appreciate what is on one’s doorstep.

  12. Hello, You

Another great day out with a great friend resulting in another great post!
Your outfit is lovely; very you. I really think you look your best in casual-chic get-ups and this one is top-notch. Can’t say the same about photo number 20, but you were expecting that from me, weren’t you? Didn’t want to disappoint you 😄.

Amsterdam looking as wonderful as ever. Don’t you just love the Jordaan area? Is it still hippy? Gosh, it’s a long time since I used that word! And as a dedicated bag lady myself I envy the totes you and Aafke bought. A lucky find!

The photos of you are fine, whatever you might think of their quality, but while my favourite one of you is where you’re standing on the steps near Bussia’s, First Place just has to go to the pic of your previous Queen Beatrix as a hippy – giving me a second chance to use that word! Doesn’t she look great? And, as a late, great entertainer over here used to say, ‘”All done in the best possible taste!”‘ Brilliant!

A happy start to the weekend.Have a good one.

    Gee

    1. And you didn’t disappoint Gee. But it was your turn last week. I am afraid I am rather fond of such slouchy trousers as you know.
The Jordaan isn’t as hippie as in the seventies. A lot of people with money have bought the houses, although the old spirit never left the area. I love the expression “All done in the best possible taste”. It oozes sarcasm haha.
