Pink jacket

Again, a visit to Amsterdam, and again to the 9 Straatjes (9 Streets) area, this time with my friend Marjolein. Wearing a pink jacket with jeans and trainers for comfort. When you are walking through a town all day, you need comfortable shoes.

Walking from the station to the 9 Streets, we passed Magna Plaza. It is a magnificent building which used to be a post office. It has been converted into a shopping mall but that never got off the ground properly. I have no idea why not. It is so beautiful and it rains a lot in the Netherlands, so why not shop indoors? Read more about it on Wikipedia.

Below: The back of Magna Plaza. The tower that you see is part of Magna Plaza. The building has a few more towers, smaller ones.

The back of Magna Plaza

Below: We started at Gastmolenstraat. In this short and small street, you will find an elaborate shop with tights, stockings and many socks. I took two photos especially for my friend and editor Selina, who is crazy about socks.

Socks and tights and stockings

The shop is called Socks We Love.

Below: Then in that narrow street, somebody was renovating a house and I took a short video. This is how they get stuff to the upper floors without using the steep and narrow stairs.

Below: We did a bit of shopping and had lunch at Koffiehuis de Hoek, an excellent address for good food, delicious cappuccino and cakes and some real hospitality.
After lunch we started to photograph the outfit. It was a bit too bright and sunny for good photos. We tried to find spots in the shade but that didn’t always work out.

Below: Then we found this house with wisteria and stairs. Good spot.

Below: My hair turned orange in the photo but you know it is not, so I rely on your memory. The pink jacket I found at kpa.haarlem. It is by Les Soeurs, a small Belgian label. It looks great buttoned up with no top underneath but it wasn’t warm enough yet, hence the blue and white striped top. You will get to see the jacket without the top further on in the year.
For more interest I added a green bracelet.

Below: We decided to do the sitting down pose here as well, after I had arranged my hair again. The trainers (sneakers) are by Vic Matié and a couple of years old.

Below: Why my hair looks orange in the photos I don’t know. Anyway, a close-up for Josep-Maria. The Delft blue earrings are by Lara Design. Very similar ones are on her website and if you want to customise the earrings, just email her and you can discuss it through video calling or email. No extra charge.

Below: In an accessory shop in the 9 Streets this salesgirl had on such a cute blouse, I had to take a photo. She was a good sport and consented.

Below: Another great building. I also took a few close-ups for you to see the details. At the top are two spires and a ship.

Amsterdams Welvaren house

Ship on top of a house in Amsterdam called Amsterdams Welvaren

Below: That ship is also above the front door, with its name underneath: “Amsterdams Welvaren” (Amsterdam Prosperity). A little bit underneath and to the right you see: “1e Nederlandsche bewaarschool anno 1830” (First Dutch Kindergarten in the year 1830). And in the middle is a face brick with a bear and the text “In de Berestraat” (In Bear street), which is the name of the street. There is a great story about the ship and the kindergarten but it is in Dutch. If you translate if through Google Translate, perhaps it will be coherent enough to understand.

Below: We stopped for a cappuccino with a madeleine, that delicious French cake which they do so well at Pompadour. They sell cakes and chocolates of the highest quality and are situated at Huidenstraat.

Below: Then on to do some more shopping. Marjolein is trying on a bright blue jumper here. Alas, it was too big. I bought a silver bag in that shop.😏

Below: Walking back to the station we came across a very wonky and small house. If it weren’t for the two buildings on either side, this house would not be here anymore.

The end of a very enjoyable day.

What happened in my life this week

Ron is buying more and more plants for the garden and with some rain and sunshine, that garden is coming along beautifully. Here are some photos below.

Below: We have a little waterfall. I am glad we purchased some more plants for the pond; they make it nicer.

Below: And the Staalmeesters canal. Such pretty picture. I probably have photographed and featured it before.

Not a lot happened this week. I am sure that getting a pedicure and picking up hemmed trousers from the tailor aren’t exciting happenings.

Marjolein and I were to do a photo shoot on Tuesday but the weather forecast said it was going to be cold and windy so we postponed it to Saturday, hoping for higher temperatures. This spring has been disappointing as far as temperature is concerned. There have been gorgeous days, but not this week. I mean, 11°C at 3 pm on the 11th of May with fierce wind? Not my idea of spring.

Below: One of my outfits this week. You saw it before, now with different jeans and footwear and wearing the cardigan open. Plus a preview of my new silver bag.

Jeans outfit with neon yellow shirt and navy cardigan

I finally got my hairpiece back, and my hairdresser cut and styled it. I think I did pretty well without it, but I am glad to have it back. The hairdresser also did my own hair and I asked her to leave it longer than she likes to, just like last time. I like it longer, it sort of bridges the distance between my head and my shoulders.

Helga and I went out to dinner; her treat, bless her. It was dodgy weather so I decided to go by car even though parking in the nearby garage is expensive. Better than arriving like a drowned cat as we say in the Netherlands.

Below: Helga in a tiered ruffle skirt. I love such skirts, I should wear my black one again.
Helga is a beauty, she is two years younger than I am but looks like 40. Some people have the best genes.

Below: Me and Helga at restaurant Moustique. It is a high-quality restaurant and the food was delicious. The service excellent too. Quite the treat.
And spending an evening with Helga is always great.

Until next week.

  1. Love the pink jacket, or shacket as the US might call it. The Delft earrings are cute, as is the yellow check blouse. I would love to explore the hosiery/socks shop. I’m obsessed with both. Your hair always looks so good, I didn’t even notice you were missing a hairpiece. Thanks for linking again!

    1. I discovered hairspray! With some things I am late to the party. That made my hair look a lot better. That and the fact that the hairdresser left it longer than usual, something she did not the last time despite my request. Ugh. And I always fuss with my hair at a shoot.

  2. What a lovely post, Greetje! I like your pink jacket and look forward to different looks with it (and your new silver purse is excellent!). I appreciate all the photos – such a gorgeous place! That ship! Seeing your friends is always a treat. Your back patio/pond are wonderful! I would be out there all day, every day, once the weather was warm enough! You’ve done a superb job on it.

    1. The garden is an accumulation of a high profiled gardener’s design, Ron, another gardener and Ron again. I had nothing to do with it but approve or disapprove. Usually I approve as I don’t know a thing about gardening. I do love our little city garden.

  3. Amsterdam is an amazing city. You captured its spirit very well. It is lovely to see you are having a ball with your gorgeous girlfriends. Love the barrel pants and a pink coat on you. And last but not least, your garden is very beautiful and peaceful.

    1. Amsterdam is cool, I’ll admit that. For me, even more as I understand the very typical Amsterdam humour. Love that.

You always have such wonderful adventures with your friends I love them all. All the photos give me a birds eye view of the Netherlands and all the interesting places you visit. I always love all the different outfits you and your friends wear and all the interesting shops, cafes and restaurants you visit. Your gardens are beautiful our tulips and daffodils are finally finished and I am now concentrating on the vegetable garden and I agree with you it took so long for spring to arrive. Today feels like summer it’s 35 degrees C but tomorrow will be back down to 12 degrees. Keep posting all your interesting photos and I’ll keep reading.

    1. Summer is arriving here too in two days. Don’t you hate it when one day it is 35 degrees (too hot) and the next day it is 12 degrees? My body has trouble coping with that. Good luck with your vegetable garden.

  5. Wow, Amsterdam is beautiful! Thanks for sharing these wonderful photos of the architecture. The socks and stockings shop is so unique and whimsical. Love your pink jacket, your outfit is perfect for walking and sight seeing.

    1. When I still worked I was much more into skirts and dresses and high heels. Now I have to wear flat shoes or nearly flat shoes. Far more difficult when styling skirts and dresses. But these trainers are right for that.

  6. Your trainers are really cute! I always like to have a pair that is both comfortable but looks nice with different outfits and these are really fun and different. I enjoyed all of your pictures. The only time I have spent in Amsterdam is at the airport! Those socks and leggings are spectacular and I love the sales girl’s blouse!

    1. I love my trainers so much that I also bought them in black, but I wear the white ones most. They look really good with skirts and dresses too, which in my eyes, is a miracle.

  7. I remember those trainers from previous posts; they are great!
So many special buildings, and I love seeing your friends as I enjoy their style too. I agree with other readers that your garden is so beautiful. Here we experienced frost last night. I feel sorry for all the eager gardeners who planted early this year, as some will have lost their tender new plants. My husband and I are waiting at least another week before we start. It is lovely to see spring in your part of the world!

    1. Frost? At the end of May? Where do you live? Here we can plant after the 6th of May, then there will be no frost anymore, for sure.
Most of the plants in our garden have been planted a couple of years ago, which is why it is already so green.

I enjoyed the photos and the fashion. You have such lovely buildings and great places for desserts and meals. The shops you share with us always look unique. Ron’s work in the garden is reaping big rewards. Lovely. I read an article about Amsterdam and the influx of tourists becoming a problem. Do you see that when you do your photo shoots?

    1. Yes, too many tourists are flooding the lovely places, but that is in every major city and at any great attraction in Europe. People get more wealthy and travel more over the years. Social media show where to go, so this is a logic consequence. When we do photo shoots we can work around the tourists. Sometimes we have to wait until people have moved on behind me, but no big deal. In times of ’emergency’ I’ll put on my cranky face and they disappear haha.

  9. Where to start? The photos of all the buildings are just beautiful! Where I live, they are constantly tearing down and putting up cement monstrosities. The socks made me laugh, and the buttons on the salesgirl’s top were cute. I may try that. I think your trainers are quite smart and would look good with just about everything. Your garden gives me so much envy! I love the waterfall and plants in it!

    1. We love our little city garden. It needs not too much maintenance (from Ron) and a gardener for pruning and such every two years.
You are right about the trainers, they do look good with just about everything. I have worn them many times with dresses and skirts too. THE solution for footwear if you don’t want to (can) wear high heels.

  10. I just love this blog and all of the architecture you show. The wisteria is amazing.

    1. Wisteria always amazes. Thank you for the compliment about my blog.

  11. Hello, You

Isn’t the wisteria beautiful this year? Maybe Ron could fit a miniature one in your garden? I believe they take a while to start flowering, but by the time you’re old and grey (like me!), you’ll be so pleased with it! We have a rose tree in our garden that’s at least 70 years old and every year it gives the whole street such pleasure with its huge number of blooms and lovely scent. It was my parents’ tree that I dug up when their house was sold. Now it (and they) lives on in the nicest possible way.

Great photos, as usual; they always remind me why the Netherlands is one of my favourite countries; and I like the look of the new silver handbag, although I’d choose one with a shoulder strap for me. But yours does look nice and roomy. I’ve never liked those silly little one-inch-square boxes you couldn’t hide a sixpence (old money) in. Give me a portmanteau every time!

You’ve put together some nice outfits again this week, but I swear you wear those jeans just to annoy me! I must admit though, they do look good.

    Have a good week.
    Gee x

    1. We used to have ivy growing against the back wall but that was a hazard to maintain. One November night it all came down in one fall and we decided not to let anything grow against the wall anymore. Ron used to sit on the ledge of the top window trying to prune it. So dangerous. So no wisteria. But I agree with you that it is fabulous. In our garden there are already three trees and it is a small garden, so no more trees.
The silver bag is the same as my orange bag but a size smaller. It does come with a shoulder strap but to me, that looks a bit silly as it has short handles which you cannot remove. It did come in the same big size as the orange one and I hesitated which one to choose. The strange thing was that, while I like the size in orange, it felt far too big in silver. Ergo, the smaller size. They had one even smaller, but I am with you, it does have to fit enough stuff.
And, yes I do wear those jeans to annoy you. Hahaha. Not true.

  12. Fun post and great photos. I love wisteria, with the big cascades of blooms and such a fragrance. Your garden with fountain looks like a lovely place to relax. Ron has good taste. I’m currently watching Van der Valk, a mystery series set in Amsterdam. A beautiful city with a cool vibe. Thanks for a fun read! 😊

    1. Amsterdam has another attraction which you won’t notice if you aren’t speaking Dutch. They have their own sense of humour. They comment very wittily on everything they see, though not everybody appreciates that. I absolutely love it and I miss it, living in Haarlem.

      1. Ooh. The white sneakers with ruffles are ace! So fun.

        1. Hi Cathy, I also have those sneakers in black but I wear the white ones more often. They also look good with skirts and dresses which is a miracle.

  13. Great post Greetje, once again. Love the fashion shoot and old buildings but my favourite, this time, has to be your stunning garden. Well done to Ron!

    1. I love my little city garden. It doesn’t take too much maintenance. Some tender loving of my husband and not even that much plus a gardener every two years to do the pruning and such.

Thank you for telling us where you got your fascinating trainers! I’ve been to the Mitie site and bought some purple quilted shoes to liven up my life… meanwhile all best!

    1. Anything that livens up your life is excellent. But I have no idea what the Mitie site is.
