This jacket is an oldy but goody by Pauw. They do have clothes that last….
It is not an easy jacket to style. I have had many failures with it. The jacket is at least 10 years old. As I was so much younger at the time (…) I wore it with a black leather pencil skirt. Later with a white pencil skirt, which you can see below.
The last photo shows how difficult it is to wear this jacket with trousers. Most trousers are too wide (see the last photo, the outfit on the left).
As a contrast between chic and casual usually makes an interesting picture, I tried jeans. The colourful scarfs are for the necessary colour. (Wearing a gold necklace in the outfit with the skirt). You can choose your favourite combination. I am very interested in your opinions.
Below: in an attempt to make the whole picture less black and somber, I tried cream skinnies and a cream scarf. Hmmm…. not too fond of this combination. The skinnies look a bit like Long Johns. I think these skinnies are better with boots over them. See last photo.
Below: with the cream/white skirt and very old (pointy) boots. I cannot say goodbye to these very comfortable DKNY boots. But they are really outdated. I should throw them away, shouldn’t I?
Below: with two other scarfs and boots over trousers. Notice the trousers on the left which are too wide for the boots.
Let me know your honest opinion. Do you like it with jeans? With the skirt? With cream skinnies? If the latter, with boots over the skinnies or with shoes?
Greetje
I DO like most of the scarfs you used here, except the white one. But I do NOT like the way you tied them. Way too long and massive and bulky this way. I would tie them somehow in a rounder, shorter way.Your black and white polka dot scarf would fit well too!I don’t like the combo with the white dress and knee high boots. And DO hang on to this coat, as it IS (a side of) you!
I will wait until you have returned and we will sort this jacket out together for next winter.
I love the pointy toe boots. If you no longer want them I will buy them and upcycle them for one of my future projects.
Thanks
I have had them altered and taken the point off. So I am afraid they are already incorporated in my own project.
I love the jacket, and it’s your style, I think. With handkerchiefs charm is perfect and win. I like it when you dress with white skirt and boots, and, as always, with jeans, perfect everything is you. You’re the girl wearing the jeans with more elegance.
Thanks. I am still not convinced what is best, so I am curious to see what the others have to say.
OK, you want the truth as I see it…I would only like this jacket with a simple black sheath under it – maybe an inch or two longer than the jacket – and then perhaps styled with a scarf up around the neck or a beautiful, still simple necklace or brooch. The other looks seem dated to me or like you are trying too hard to make a businesslike jacket look casual. I think twenty year olds can get away with this almost “vintage” look, but not us older glamazons.
I very much appreciate your honest opinion. I don’t like it very much when it is a business look which is how it will be with a black skirt and simple jewellery. That is the way I bought it, years ago. I thought that you could always combine casual with chic or business; that it would make the outfit more interesting. But perhaps you can only do that in a certain way. Or perhaps the whole jacket is outdated. The last thing I want to look like is mutton dressed up as lamb. Have to consider to let this one go. Or try something else.
I love pieces that maybe older and still looks as good as new. My favorite look is the one with the jeans & the cream dress. You had me laughing on the long john comment! If it’s the length of the jacket that’s make it hard to style – you can have it tailored as suggested by Suzanne. Maybe you with a belt and make it look like a dress?Alicewww.happinessatmidlife.com
I will try a belt too. Making it shorter will most probably ruin the shape (the tail bit at the back will become too short). I would much rather give it to somebody else then. You have given me all good ideas, so I will work on it a bit more.Nice to get all these styling tips.
Greetje, personally I have never been a friend of pinstripes, neither for men nor for women. However, I do like the cut of this jacket and it fits you perfectly. So ignore my comment on pinstripes -)My favourite is definitey the elegant styling with a skirt underneath. I love shift dresses with a matching long jacket (like the Royals tend to wear it) so maybe you could try it with a black dress underneath and just add some colour with heels and a scarf? You have a fabulous collection – Anne of “Playing with scarves” would be proud of you!!AnnetteLady of Style
Annette, I was just thinking of Trina’s comment that a scarf might be a bit too much. But I do have a black dress but I think it is slightly longer. I will keep on trying. Or give it away.
the back detailing on that coat is just fabulous and i love the fun scarf in the first picsbrett
Aha, another fan. Thanks Brett. I will put you on the pro side.
Hi Greetje,Yes I have to say I too like it with the skirt underneath, rather than the jeans, but what do I know……..not a lot!Anyway, about the pointy boots, yes in my opinion I’d definitely get rid of them. They are very witchy! He! He!Oh, and by the way, no scarf would be my choice.
The jacket is still definitely a difficult piece. It is a 50/50 score of people liking it or not. If I wear it without a scarf and with the skirt it is cleaner but also more classic and no colour near my face. But I have been given some good advice which I will use.If the boots are very witchy, then that is -to me- more a pro than a con hahaha. I have to admit I don’t wear them anymore. I will hang on to them another year as Suzanne says the are back in fashion. Probably slightly different though… We will see.
ths scarf add the perfect touch to such a serious long jacket!love it!!!!Love, Ylenia from Longuette
Aha, a newbie on my blog AND one that loves the scarfs. Thanks for visiting and leaving a comment Ylenia.
It’s a beautiful jacket! I can see where it would be hard to style. It’s very formal, so not very versatile. I like it best over the white dress/skirt with the high boots, though I think a pair of skinny trousers would look good too. Have you tried cropped? I like cropped pants with longer jackets. I love that you showed us all these combinations. It’s so much fun to look at them all.
I am glad you enjoyed it. I try to be different with my blog by showing all my trials (and errors) whereas most blogs only show the best picture. I am not very good at styling so I use all my readers as free stylists haha. All tips, including your cropped trousers (I have them in black) will be tried by me.
I agree I prefer it with the jeans. It’s a fabulous jacket. Marie S
I am going to try some more. See what it brings. You might see the jacket another time. Glad you like it though.
You have an amazing collection of scarves! I love the fact that you smile in your photos and that you look at the camera. For me the back of the jacket has a Victorian twist. My favorite outfit is the first one because I think it elongates your figure and I love the scarf. The outfit with the skirt and those slick DKNY boots is my second favorite.
I have a draw full of scarves. Usually they only keep each other company as I do not wear them much. Which is a shame. Thanks for the compliments and yes: smiling is (hopefully) making somebody else smile too.
Hi Gretje dear!I love the jacket but I see it is very difficult to style. I always play on the safe side (and because you don’t, I follow you to see if it rubs off on me, haha) so I wouldn’t buy it even if I like it so much.I must say it looks tailor-made-fits you so well!. Anyway, I would go with the jeans and skirt combos. Really don’t like the last combination with the boots because the way they are cut at the top creates interest in itself and it cmpetes for attention with the scarf and the jacket. Too much and the viewer’s eye doesn’t know where to focus. Am I making any sense?
Yes you are making perfect sense. Too many points of attention is one of my biggest pitfalls. I love it that you say I don’t play it safe haha.. that is an understatement. Only it is not because I am daring, but because I get it wrong so many times. LOLRemember you asked me whether I knew beforehand how an outfit would look like? When I was trying out? And I answered that I certainly did not as the amount of bloopers on this blog proved?I have to re-think this jacket.
Best jacket I have ever seen, and it looks sooooooooooo perfect on you.XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
There is my dare devil friend. I knew you would like it. Right up your street.
Love them all, but my fave is the jacket with the black boots and white dress. Also love how you played up the other looks with the various scarfs. Especially love the green scarf!! Brilliant!!
Well, there are people who like it and there are those who don’t. I am confused but will come up with a cunning plan haha.
Since this jacket looks as if it were tailor made for you, it’s a good thing you hung on to it. I agree with Bella, if you had desribed it to me, I wouldn’t have put it with jeans, but I too love this look. Me only suggestion would be to not wear the scarf, the jacket is enough of a statement piece. With jeans I would just make it look effortless, jeans, white button down and then (wow, look at my jacket). Besides you have that incredible way of wearing jeans. I also like the cream dress look with it. I like how you wore the boots but it might be fun to try heels, give it a 1920’s vibe and then wear a men’s tie with it (haha, yea, that’s what I would definitely wear with it). In fact, the more I write about this fun jacket, the more I think I just might need to borrow it. Great look and great jacket!
Thanks for the tips Trina. I am going to try them all as I am not happy with this jacket yet. I agree about the scarf, although I have seen it worn before with scarf and it looks fine. Perhaps the scarfs are not the right shape. “Problem” is that just black and white does not do very much for me.
I like the jacket (just bought myself a really long one!) but I would prefer to see it without any scarves. I think it looks best when styled in a dandy way. You could keep it simple and try to make it hip with a white top and one colour accent, like a hip necklace, belt or bag. From the above combinations I like the last version best. I also like the jacket combined with jeans, but then with a white top and no scarf.
I will try. It is not easy to add a necklace to the neckline. Just the gold necklace makes it even more classic and not modern. Difficult thing. It will prove to be another headache case like my grey boyfriend jacket and my long leather skirt.
If you would have described this to me- I wouldn’t have said jeans, no way. But seeing it- that is my favorite. I like the “dandy” effect- it showcases the classic shape of that fabu jacket (love the pin stripes) yet the jeans keeps it fresh and current. I say add a top hat, tie on an ascot and look like a true Dandy!
Don’t get me started haha… I do have a top hat (my post with the red coat) and a tie, so a Dandy look can easily be achieved. Hmmm ….on second thoughts… why not? Thanks for stopping by Bella and leaving a comment.
I am going to be honest – I do not like this look on you. It does not fit your youthful and joyful personality. It fits your body perfectly but it is too “old” for you. Seriously. I don’t see how you are going to make this look fun. Maybe with the top hat and ascot that Bella suggested but then where would you wear it? Or maybe if you have it truly shortened to a jacket length. You could ask your tailor. As for the pointed toe boots – I have a new pair of gray suede to the knee boots with this extended toe and I almost returned them because they are so different – but take a look at Marc Jacob’s runways – that long pointed toe look is very modern. I wore my boots and younger girls think they are cool so those you may be able to make work. Happy Easter! Have a wonderful weekend! Suzanne
Thanks Suzanne. Maybe I can make somebody happy with it. It is a style from long ago. Perhaps it does not fit my new (gigle) blog personality..
I wish, lol.We are planning to move to Málaga close to our youngest daughter, so I am looking out for ideas.hehehheheheh.happy Easter
