Golden yellow blouse as a jacket against murals

Get comfortable as you are about to see many murals…so many, it will make your eyes dazzle. A lot of them function as background for my golden yellow blouse as a jacket.
My friend Katrien was over from South Africa where she lives nowadays. When she is in the Netherlands, she has many friends and family to visit, so I am chuffed that she wants to see me too.

Katrien is a terrific photographer, she really has ‘The Eye’. We agreed to go to Straat Museum (Street Museum) in Amsterdam. With fabulous murals as background, she took my outfit photos. It was a fabulous day.

I had been in the area of Straat Museum before. There are murals outside of the museum as well, but I had never been inside the museum. It pleasantly surprised me.

Below: From Amsterdam Central Station we took the (free) ferry across the water to the industrial area where the museum is located.

Below: As we were a bit early, we headed to a nearby restaurant (IJver) first. Great building, great cappuccino.

Below: What a quirky building. Loved the atmosphere. We were off to a good start.

Below: First outfit photo in the restaurant. This linen blouse is the one I ordered in Milan and it can be worn several ways. This time as a jacket but you will see it again in different ways.

Below: The first mural I saw entering the left hall, was by artist Pichi Avo. This time I made sure I knew which artist created what mural.

Below: As a colour lover, I adored this mural. Had it been a bit smaller, I would have liked it on our wall in the living room. The artist is Okuda San Miguel.

I could have stood a bit straighter…still working on that.

Below: Artist Mohamed L’Ghacham. Guides from the Straat Museum were explaining the art to groups of children. You can never start too early learning about art.

Have your eyes turned square yet? Or is it becoming too much 😄?

Below: I thought this was a rather special one, presumably Medusa. The 3D effect is amazing. Artist Odeith.

Below: The artwork below by Wild Drawing is photographed from two sides. Again, what a special effect. (By the way, three crosses under each other are the sign of Amsterdam.)

Below: Mural by YorkOne, again colourful.
My jeans are mid-rise and by COS, the shoes are ancient. Found them as I was switching winter shoes for summer shoes.

Below: Close-up of the shoes. They are not tattered because they are old, they started their life like this. As often with me…it’s an acquired taste. Took them to the cobbler anyway as the elastic band around my heel, which he added for me, began to fall apart. With the elastic they are very comfortable, without the elastic I used to lose them.

Below: I was taking photos too. Katrien was able to take this one of me after warning me twice to sit up straight. Able or not, I am afraid I am still not doing too well on this.
The bag is from 2012.

After we had lunch at the museum restaurant, it was time for Katrien to go to her next meeting with a friend. Thoroughly enjoyable day.

Next week I’ll try and restrain myself with the number of photos. I don’t want to wear you out.

What happened in my life this week

Saturday Ron and I walked dog Watson at the beach in gorgeous weather. Behind the beach restaurant we saw this bike ‘parked’ and Ron commented on it. It turned out to be the bike of a girl sitting behind us, against the restaurant wall, who said she had forgotten it the night before. We thought she was high as a kite but could be mistaken.

Bike on the beach

In the afternoon I visited Marianne again and on my way to her, dropped the above shoes off at the cobbler. Below: Marianne in a summer dress, coping with the high temperatures we were experiencing last week. Her hair is a bit of a mess as she had been swimming that morning.

Marianne

Below: Sunday morning Ron asked me to take some photos and a video of his Renault 4 car, done up for a wedding as he has had several requests for that. He is now busy with a website, bought a chauffeur’s cap, the lot. He’s got a new project.

In the afternoon we had cake across the street, with Ina, whose birthday it was the day before. Below: It was hot, so I wore this old silk blouse. Because of the length and the shape of the blouse, I had to wear trousers with it that were narrow. I should have checked the photo better. Now it looks as if I am bow-legged. And you already had that impression because of my barrel jeans. 🤭

Summer blouse on narrow white jeans

Monday was too hot to do anything apart from some blogging and a few short walks. Below: Wore my RIXO London dress which is great for hot weather. Of course, I like it better with my red high heels, but that is no longer possible.

RIXO London dress

Tuesday the temperatures rose to 38° Celsius (100.4 Fahrenheit) and it was also humid which meant sultry. Everybody in their right mind stayed at home with ways to cool themselves. Marjolein and I, however, did a photo shoot for next week. We would have loved to do it another day but our agendas didn’t allow it. I am very grateful to her. We managed to stay out of the sun most of the time. Alas, the sweet cottage restaurant in the park where we took the photos, was closed with a big For Sale sign on the window. Bummer.
We settled for lunch at the beach boulevard (below). We were shielded from the sun, we could see the sea, the lunch was good and so was the iced coffee. I am trying to lose a little bit of weight but cannot find the necessary switch in my brain.

Beach boulevard restaurant terrace

Wednesday the heat cooled down a little and with the air-conditioning on, I could do my fitness and wash/blow-dry my hair. No sweat (pun intended). Just a quiet day.
Below: Wore this outfit. Not that striking but comfortable.

Wide blue summer trousers

At the end of the day came the rain everybody was desperate for. YAY.
Below: I was looking at a rain app to see how many showers were still to come. When I showed this chart to Ron he said: “This looks like the beating of my heart, every time I look at you.” Ahhh…sweet! After nearly 37 years.

Sweet and funny remark Ron

Thursday was a joyful day again. We didn’t see our granddaughters due to traffic chaos and dog Watson was with his dog sitter (because Wil loves him so much).
Ron and I decided to go to Alkmaar and check out lamps. Our lamp above the dining table is old (from 1988 or so) and not functioning well. We checked two stores and found what we were looking for but…long story which is for another time. The rest of the day we wandered through Alkmaar, a great old town. I even dare to say, nicer than Haarlem. If you want a preview of the city, click through to these posts: one with Sylvia in 2017, one with Marcella in 2023 and another one with Sylvia in 2020.
Ron offered to do a photo shoot with me as the backgrounds in Alkmaar would be good. Fantastic. Getting dressed was easy as I always have photos of ‘Outfits still to do’.

Friday was quiet, nothing to report.

Hi Greetje, I love the photos you and your friend took at the gallery. The outfit you wore was perfect for this photo shoot and looked very attractive on you. There must be so many talented artists in Holland. Coming from a family of artists my 2 Sisters, my oldest brother and my deceased father( who didn’t start painting until 50yrs old. My youngest brother is a wood carver, and I have done stained glass and have been a crafter for many years most recently wreath making. One of my Sisters entered one of her paintings in the Luxembourg art competition, she didn’t win the main prize but got a consolution prize and was encouraged to enter the next competition next year. I love all the interesting places you go to and hearing about your family life. Keep posting and I’ll keep watching and reading.

    1. The Straat Museum surprised me. I thought it was far more scribbly graffiti and not real works of art. It blew me away. Indeed, so much talent. You being an artist yourself will probably be able to appreciate it even more. Like my friend Katrien. I hope your sisters wins a prize next year, but if not, it is just the opinion of a few people. Others may think differently.

  2. Your photos are inspiring me to be a little more daring with my wardrobe! I loved your yellow blouse. I, too, used to have brown hair and like my new natural color much better.

    1. Oh yes Julie, be a lot more daring with your wardrobe. It is such fun. It is like playing with your dolls when you were a kid and dressing them. Now you can do that with yourself. I love a lot of colour in an outfit, but that is me, doesn’t need to be for you. Explore, research and have fun.

  3. I really enjoyed the murals, if we come back to Amsterdam anytime that’s one place we will be sure to visit. Never too many pictures on your blog, they are always so interesting. Your outfit was a perfect foil for the colourful art. You are a great ambassador for your country, they should be paying you!

I always enjoy your weekly updates too, Ron is such a sweetheart.

Thank you for all your hard work and effort on your blog. I have been following you for many years.

    1. Although I didn’t know what the art of the museum would look like, I thought it wise to choose solid colours. And I was right.
As there are too many tourists in Amsterdam as it is, giving all sorts of problems (but also income), I doubt whether anybody would pay me to promote my country.
Thanks for all your compliments, they warm my blogger heart. And thank you for following me for all these years.

  4. I’ll look at 1 million photos if they’re good, which yours are. I really enjoyed all of the murals. The contrast and sometimes blending in of your yellow blouse was lovely. Good idea on pinning the tie in the back.
I feel like Ron is always up to something!

    1. I have many clothing tricks up my sleeve. I wasn’t going to let that bow slump.
You are right in thinking Ron is always up to something. His mind never stops.

  5. Another amazing post. I agree with everyone else that you can’t have too many photos. The murals are fascinating. I appreciate all the work you did in documenting the artists. And that yellow jacket is gorgeous on you!

    1. It was quite a bit of work, but then again, it’s my hobby, so it isn’t really work.
      Thanks for the compliments.

  6. That tone of yellow looks great on you! I love the sandals, green bag and whole outfit!

    1. Thanks. I thought it was a good outfit to be photographed against street art. Patterns would have been too busy.
Normally I would have worn my new vintage Jil Sander shoes but they were at the cobbler.

  7. I love murals. A few days ago, I organized a tour for my retirement community, where I guided them through the most beautiful ones in my city. They’re perfect for a fashion pose, LOL. I like your yellow blouse over the black camisole. The Straat Museum looks amazing; I love this type of architecture. Your sandals are truly unique. Did you already have a blog in 2012? I seem to remember you looking like this, with the white shirt. I love your floral dress; it looks so cute on you.

    1. My dear Josep-Maria, I published my first post in June 2012 and you and Mis Papelicos were the first ones to comment. I was amazed that anybody had found me. I wasn’t even sure at the time I was going to really become a blogger. You both convinced me to do so. Then I really started in November 2012 and posted every day until you commented that it was too much to keep up haha.
As that white blouse was pretty new in the summer of 2012, I will have featured it in 2013 for sure. You have an excellent memory.

  8. Some fabulous artwork from very talented artists. Love the linen blouse. Always good when a shirt/blouse can also double as a jacket.

    1. Graffiti has evolved, hasn’t it. This is really good artwork.
I just styled the blouse with the bow at the front, as it was originally meant, so that will be a next blog post in the near future.

  9. Hello, You

Amazing art, great outfits and an excellent post all round.
What a great time you had with your friend Katrien. For some reason I love that little ferry behind the station; I could go back and forth all day even though it’s only a short trip. I wish we’d found that restaurant you went to when we were there: I’ve made a note for next time.
That exhibition is certainly different, some amazing, innovative work there.
Love Ron’s Renault, it looks an ideal wedding car. Next time you take a photo of him make sure he’s wearing his chauffeur’s uniform and cap. Maybe he could do airport meet’n’greets as well as weddings! We had a Renault like that when we stayed in what was Yugoslavia back then. It was a grand little runner, and I had a Renault 5 back here. Both nice cars. Good Luck with his new venture.
Your temperature last week just beat ours, I think. I must say that at its peak we put down tools (husband) and brushes (me) and sat and read in our nicely cool north-facing front room as even in the shade the garden was too hot. But despite the heat you had you still got around. That bicycle in the sand: Loved it! It was an art installation in its own right!

    Have a good week.

    Gee

    1. The restaurant I went to is on an industrial part of town across the water (hence the ferry), so that wouldn’t easily pop up in Lonely Planet. Although you never know. It is a short trip and for free with the ferry from Central Station Amsterdam, so next time…
Ron has a chauffeur’s cap but I doubt very much whether he will go in a full uniform.
He will only do a trip when he is booked, so airport meet’n’greets are probably off limits. Plus, you cannot park there for more than 2 minutes.
You were wise to sit in your north-facing room.
Ron spotted the bicycle in the sand. You and him have the same mind apparently.

  10. Amazing murals! Almost too much to take in with all the colors and images. My hat is off to the artists. Very impressive works. Love the yellow shirt/jacket. It looks so good on you.

    1. And just think I didn’t photograph everything, neither did I use all photos that I did take. This Street Art has evolved enormously. I was lucky that Katrien suggested to go to the museum. I had no idea it would be this good.

I love, love, love this edition of your blog. The Straat Museum looks fantastic. I have been to Amsterdam, but sadly, not to that museum. If I’m ever fortunate enough to get back to Amsterdam, that will be the first thing I go see! Your outfit was perfect for that museum visit!

    1. The Straat Museum is easy to reach from the back of Central Station. Just as long as you take the right ferry haha. But people will help you with that. I knew that the art would be colourful and sometimes a bit overwhelming, so I decided to dress in solid colours and not patterns. I didn’t know that the art would compliment the blouse this much. Just lucky.

    Another very enjoyable post, Greetje!

    Great murals.

I prefer you as a blonde.

Love Ron’s remarks and his new project. 😃

    Love Marianne’s interior decor!

    1. Glad you enjoyed yourself on my blog darling. I know murals are your thing.

  13. I am constantly amazed by the wealth of artistic talent there …that museum is the perfect venue for showing so much in one place. Apparently, Vancouver Island, where I live, has more artists concentrated in one area than any other place in Canada. I believe that! My next volunteer opportunity is to be a docent in a particularly interesting art gallery and teaching venue nearby. Very excited about that. Marianne also enjoys colour in her home as you do…such an upbeat interior. I collected many prints and other momentos from my travels and artists here when decorating my wee den, and with some colourful furniture from my former home now in one place , it’s an exuberant crayon box of colour just for me. I love your Milan purchase, Greetje, and expect to see you style it in many other ways. I hope you don’t have such heat again for quite some time …totally saps one’s energy. Sun with breezes 👍

    1. Exciting new volunteer opportunity. Hope you will enjoy it as much as it sounds.
The weather is perfect at the moment with rain during the night.
And you will definitely see the blouse again. Styled in a different way.

  14. Love the photos of the murals! I might have to visit that museum if I’m ever in Amsterdam again.

We’ve been reading about extreme heat in Europe in the news. So glad it finally cooled off and you got some rain!

    1. Nature needs rain!! At the moment we are experiencing the best weather. Warm during the day but not hot and often rain during the night. Yay.
If you are in Amsterdam, then the museum is so easy to reach by ferry from the back of Central Station. Be sure to take the right ferry though, there are more than one.

  15. Wow, what amazing murals! They’re a perfect backdrop for the blouse! I love how you’ve styled your “souvenir” from Milan, just perfect.

I never would have thought it gets that hot in the Netherlands. Is that unusual for summer there?

    1. Thank you Susan, it was Katrien who suggested we’d go to that museum. What a revelation.
As you know, I have found the right way to style my blouse and I am very happy about that.
No, usually it doesn’t get that hot in the Netherlands. And if it happens, it’s usually only for a couple of days. In the south of the Netherlands and also in the east, they experience these temperatures more. Climate change, right?! It will become the south of France here. It is a good thing we never bought a holiday home in France. In Italy and Spain the temperatures are insane.

  16. Incredible photos! I especially like the one where you’re reaching to grasp the hand of the man — it looks as if he’s gazing right at you.

    1. It is like the leaning tower of Pisa…you just cannot resist haha.

  17. Great post, I love the photos! All the fabulous colours! And love your outfits too! Thanks for all your hard work!
    Karen from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

    1. Usually the ‘work’ isn’t that hard haha. This time I did have to put in quite a few hours, sorting out the artists with the artwork. But it still is my hobby, so not really work.

  18. I agree with Katrien. Never too many photos. Love your blog!

    1. A reader told me once that many photos isn’t bad as long as they all show something else. The outfit may be the same but as long as the background is different, there is something new to see.

  19. Oh, these pics were so lovely! Thanks so much for the murals. And I looked at the posts from 2017, 2020, and 2023. So much fun, and so much beauty. My week would not be complete without you and the beautiful pics!

    1. Janis, thank you very much. You make my blog heart sing.

  20. Alice Mascini Avatar

I do like the brown hair!

    1. I like my brown hair too. It wasn’t easy switching to blond, but Ron said the blond made me look softer. And brown is a colour which is less easy to dye than blond.

  21. Katrien Heere Avatar

Never too many pics in your blog, they’re always great and interesting. It was fun, we’ll have to do this again next time I’m in Holland.

    1. And your photos make a fantastic blog post. Thanks again.
