When I returned a jumper to the store because it just did not do anything for me, Ron accompanied me. He saw these ice blue linen trousers with a long jacket in the window of The Lab Women’s Clothing and urged me to try it on. If he particularly likes something and I like it too, I will buy it. Which made it a far more expensive day than I had envisioned. (And no, I don’t want him to pay for it. Sometimes he does, but I wouldn’t accept it all the time.)

We took the photos in the picturesque old town of Zwolle, just before visiting my brother and SIL who live there.

Below: Scenic photo by Ron.

Zwolle

Below: This house gives you the impression you are in southern Europe instead of Zwolle. Very mediterranean, impeccably maintained.

House in Zwolle

Nevertheless, Zwolle is an old town which dates to the Middle Ages. The first mention of Zwolle was in 1040. (You can read more about the history of Zwolle if you click the link.)

Below: This house was built in 1449 and was renovated in 1977. But the focus was on my outfit, so you don’t see much of it (sorry). I was checking the belt, which didn’t always stay up. It is a strange belt and it is supposed to be askew. I added it to create a connection with the black shoes. The cuff bracelet followed logically. Ron chose the Dries van Noten bag to go with the outfit. It is rapidly becoming my go-to bag.

Below: I particularly like this photo. Didn’t even think twice about sitting on an old wall with my pastel-coloured jacket. The vintage Jil Sander shoes, bought in Antwerp, proved to be great. No blisters.

Below: Even though this is a chain of cheese stores, they kept their quality. As you might know, the Dutch are called ‘kaaskoppen’ (cheese heads).

Terraces in Zwolle

Below: We chose the terrace with the fountain, with a lot of shade as temperatures were rising to 30⁰ C (86⁰ F).

Below: Ron liked this image with my reading glasses. I sometimes find them a bit harsh, but OK, at least they are not frumpy.

Below: At city hall we saw this mosaic sofa. The letters say: City, I am home!
By that time I found my outfit a lot more comfortable than I had expected it to be. OK, it is a bit tricky on a bike but it is breezy and lightweight.

Below: Zwolle is a neat city and they care for their history, as these two impeccable buildings below show.

Zwolle

Below: It is a city by a river, called IJssel. That figures because all old places thrived through trading across water.

Below: Ahhh…being all lovely and sweet with the roses. It was the last photo of the shoot and we were off to my brother’s house.

What happened in my life this week

Saturday we had an early start as Ron, once again, was selling old stuff at the Antique Market in town.
Below: here he is behind his stand. A pity he didn’t sell the tea maker (bottom right). He did OK but decided this was the last time as it is too much hard work for too little money.

Ron at the Antique Market

Below: He had coffee and tea with him and cold drinks to sell. Last time he sold a lot of coffee, not this time. His sign says ICECOLD € 2.50.

Ron trying to sell ice cold drinks at the Antique Market

Sunday he had to clear everything away. I helped him bringing stuff to and from the market on Saturday, and unloading the car on Sunday, but he did 95% of the work.
In the afternoon Anja (living in Spain now) and I had a Facetime conversation. Wonderful that you can keep in touch on a regular basis this way. Below: Anja.

Tuesday was fitness day and I tried out my new blouse from Toosh in Milan to see what the ‘snags’ were. One snag was that my bosom was prominently visible when I sat down. Not a little bit but full on. I don’t want that because people will get embarrassed. The second snag was that I have to tie the knot at the front a certain way to prevent the image of a big, fat belly. This time I know this before the photo shoot instead of during or after. You live and learn.

We always write the groceries we have run out of, on a piece of paper on the kitchen counter. I know, very old-fashioned.
As we were out of small matches, I wrote that down (“kleine lucifers” in Dutch). The next day I came downstairs to this (see photo below).

Matches

If you didn’t get it (you had to have been there…), Ron placed a box with long matches on the paper, took one match out and broke it into a small match).

Wednesday the sun decided to disappear which was fine by me as I had to iron. Ron took my car for a professional cleaning and got rid of the dirt from transporting his stuff to the antique market. That was part of his Saturday profit gone down the drain 😂.
We were invited for dinner by Froukje and Petro, our friends and neighbours and I wore this outfit below. (Link to original post with a yellow top and with a black linen batwing shirt.)

Yellow and black pleated skirt with a black t-shirt

Wednesday was a wonderful day with my friend Katrien, who now lives in South Africa. She was over for a couple of weeks and took the time in her busy schedule to see me.
We went to a museum in Amsterdam with nothing but great big murals. It was fantastic. You will see it next week (loads of photos).
Ron had dropped me off at the train station in the morning. When he also picked me up in the afternoon, he drove on to the centre of the city for a drink on a terrace. He knows that is my favourite pastime. Below: view from our terrace on a cloudy day but with a nice temperature.

Thursday was visiting granddaughters’ day.

For the country it was a day of looking back at the NATO top, held in The Hague. What was said (as far as we know and believe…) you can read in the papers.
As my blog is all about outfits, I want to share a few outfit photos, like this photo (below) of Princess Amalia (on the left) in a Ralph Lauren dress, together with her mum and dad.
Boy, does she look good.

Princess Amalia with her mum and dad

Then our King Willem-Alexander and especially our Queen Maxima with Trump and other world leaders.
What a total knock-out this woman is! And that neon lime jumpsuit by Natan…gorgeous.

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima with Trump and other world leaders

To bring Trump in a good mood for the difficult NATO decisions that had to be made, some major sucking up was done. One of the things was, that he got to stay with the king and queen in their palace (that was a first).
Below: Killed myself laughing over this cartoon by Hein de Kort in our paper.

Friday was a quiet day with some errands I had to run. Marcella (below) came over for coffee. We created a number of videos for her website and I took some earring photos as below.

Marcella

In the evening the neighbours from across the street were visiting to have a drink with us.

  1. Greetje, I LOVE this suit on you!! You are statuesque and regal in the wide trousers and the floating duster. I would look like a pile of laundry in this! Well done, Ron! Sorry he didn’t sell very much, though.
    Wonderful pictures, thanks!!

    1. “A pile of laundry”…hahaha. Funny.

  2. Lovely suit and the style and color are so good on you.
Your Queen is a very impressive woman; I always enjoy the youtube videos of her outfits–s definite and elegant style always.

    1. Thanks Sharon, I am pleased with it. And our Queen isn’t just pretty and stylish, she is also really intelligent and stimulates good causes like micro financing women.

  3. You wear the linen suit well. Very stylish with the shoes and accessories. Interesting that Ron helps with the styling. A man of many talents. So many beautiful photos except the one of DT. He is so horrible that I am embarrassed and ashamed of him. I am so sorry my country has elected such a despicable person. Utterly unredeemable, unfortunately.

    1. Ron is very creative and he often helps me styling. I come up with an outfit and he can say what I should change. Really helpful. And as with this outfit, he has a keen eye for clothes for me. Sometimes we totally disagree. There is of course, also a matter of taste.
As for DT, I feel for you and we are quite anxious about what is to come.

    2. Agree, Trump is so embarrassing and I (like many Americans) hate what he’s doing to our country. Always feel like I need to apologize to other countries. Sometimes I wish the Netherlands had ancestry citizenship like Ireland does, I might be doing a reverse migration!
Oh, and on a more cheerful note, I loved the ice blue, it’s one of my favorite colors. And Queen Maxima is fabulous!

      1. I can tell you that a lot of transgenders from America have applied for asylum in the Netherlands. They do not feel safe anymore. It was always hard on them, of course, as people can be so judgemental but now it has become far worse. In their slipstream I expect many more people from the LGBTQI community to flee America.
And what he is doing to your healthcare system…my word. It is bad as it is, certainly compared to the Netherlands, but he is making it even worse.
Alas, a reverse migration as in ancestry citizenship…I don’t think we have that. There is a lot of squabbling going on in our outgoing cabinet over immigration. Elections are coming up. Sigh…so much right wing across the world.
Thanks for the compliments though. And know I would never judge a person for what their government does, or their father has done etc.

  4. I have read about Queen Maxima on The Court Jeweler’s blog. She has brains and beauty, multilingual to boot. Her daughter is the future queen and is equally gorgeous and elegant. I wish I had a husband even a tiny bit into fashion. He is oblivious. While not a wide leg fan, I think you pull this cool blue look off marvelously.

    1. Thank you very much for the compliment on my outfit. And yes, Maxima isn’t just a stylish beauty, she also has brains and uses them. We adore her. And so does her husband (very unlike Charles and Diana).

  5. This linen look is beautiful, original, and I suppose very fresh. The volume and movement of this outfit are fantastic. I also really like your close-up with reading glasses; they look great on you. It’s been a while since I’ve seen Anja. I love her hairstyle.

    1. Thanks for the compliments Josep-Maria. I thought you’d like this outfit. Anja’s hair is so good. I so envy her curls.

  6. I do love a wide leg pant and a long duster coat. Plus, being linen, adds to how lovely that outfit looks. I saw the NATO talks featured on the tv news this week and wondered who the very stylish and attractive woman was. (Now found out via your post that it was your Queen.)

    1. Thanks for the compliment. My husband often has a good eye for styling (not always though).
Our Queen Maxima doesn’t only look gorgeous, dresses perfectly and modern, she also has brains, wit and stimulates micro financing for women in order to give them independence and much more. We adore her. And unlike Charles with Diana, our King Willem-Alexander adores her too and thinks she deserves every attention she gets.

  7. So many wonderful comments! This is a great post! Ron has superb taste, both in wives and in fashion. You look like you stepped out of a fashion magazine in that gorgeous outfit.
I saw that NATO photo in the news, and I too focused on the beautiful woman, and did not know who she was. She sounds Iike an amazing person. Thank you for enlightening us.
I look forward to reading your posts every week and appreciate all the time and creativity you put into them, Greetje.

    1. Hahaha..Cynthia, you unknowingly said the wrong thing. Ron does not have superb taste in wives as I am his third wife LOL. Three times lucky.
I agree with you that the outfit is fashion magazine worthy. Sometimes I hit the jackpot.
Queen Maxima is an amazing person. She is fun, down to earth, has a sense of humor and she endeavours in good causes like stimulating micro financing for women in order to give them independence.
Thank you for all the compliments Cynthia. It is so good to know that my posts are appreciated. Sometimes I doubt whether I will continue, but comments like yours always put me back on the right track.

  8. Oh, what an excellent buy! It looks very cool (in both senses of the word) and edgy, especially with the belt.

Zwolle looks like a beautiful town! I’d be right there with you on the shady terrace.

And LOL at the cartoon, and the Queen’s impressions. 😉

    1. I was in doubt when I had just bought it, afraid it might prove to be uncomfortable because of the length. Luckily that is not so, quite the contrary, although you have to treat it as a long dress and lift the bottom part when you go up or down the stairs.
You’d love Zwolle, it is indeed a beautiful town.
The Queen’s impression I didn’t mention, but apparently it went viral. We don’t know whether it was an impression or just an unlucky expression that was labeled that way. I cannot imagine Maxima doing that. Too much at stake.

  9. Ron obviously has excellent taste! I love your ice blue outfit although if it was me, I would probably prefer the jacket to be a bit shorter. Perhaps mid calf length.

Your queen’s outfit is stunning! I had to look twice to see who else was in the photo as my eye was drawn only to her amid all those navy suits. And the cartoon is hilarious! Trump is such an idiot.

Many of your photos remind me of our recent trip to Germany. Different, but similar.

    1. Because the jacket is so long, I was afraid it would be difficult to wear, but it isn’t. I only have to pull up trousers and jacket when I go up or down stairs. As if I am wearing a long dress.
Yes, Maxima get’s all the attention and I bet she knew what she was doing. She is a fantastic woman.
The cartoon was too good not to share.
The Netherlands and Germany are indeed similar.

  10. Ron has great taste. The ice-blue linen suit looks wonderful on you. Linen is my favorite summer fabric.
Nice to hear your shoes were comfortable, they’re very chic.
Queen Maxima is stunning, that shade of green is difficult to wear but she nails it.
Loved the cartoon, thanks for the laugh!

    1. Ron is getting far too many compliments by you all. You’ll make him conceited. On the other hand…he chose me as his wife…you are right, he has great taste hahaha.
The shoes are such a great find, really happy with them.
Loved that I made you laugh. Goal achieved.

  11. Keep trusting Ron, the suit is gorgeous. I’m not a fan of the belt, it looks like you’re wearing ammo (bullets).

    1. I do trust Ron. Unless I am really sure about something and it is just not his taste, which happens too.
The belt is a quirky one, an acquired taste. I liked the juxtaposition.

  12. Well, you are so right to trust Ron. You rock that outfit! And lucky you, Greetje , to have legs like that to show off in the shorts. Pants, and longer skirts for me, with road map veins on my lower legs. Loved the cartoon…Dutch humour at its best. Queen Maxima was absolutely stunning….who was looking at the dignitaries! Well, apparently we Canadians are in for another rough time…not popular with someone in Washington…but wait a few days and it will likely all change on an whim…again.
Ron’s quirky sense of humour is such a joy… and interesting that part of the Dutch name for matches is ‘lucifer’…devil? My cousin from South Africa is now in Vancouver, after travelling on the Rocky Mountaineer train from Banff, so I’m off on the ferry over to the city to begin a lovely visit with her, before she comes back with me to visit my wee home , and celebrate Canada 🇨🇦 Day on July 1. A lot of preparation, but will be so good to see her again. Most recently was in UK in 2022, but the first time was 1958. We have changed…just a bit! WhatsApp , which we both used for my trip there in March, has been so handy to use to connect with her.

    1. Social media can be both a curse and a blessing. Use it well.
I agree with you about Queen Maxima. We adore her.
The Dutch name for matches is lucifer, indeed like the devil.

  13. Ron is right — you look great in those glasses!

    1. If everybody tells him he is right in so many things, I might have a problem with Ron hahaha.

  14. Blue outfit is gorgeous

    1. Thank you Petra. I doubted it at first as baby blue is not a right colour for me. But perhaps ice blue is? And, of course the yellow of the earrings help.

  15. Love the blue trousers and long jacket. You look stunning……you have the height to carry it off.
Ron has a good eye for style

    1. Ron and I don’t always agree on style, but I will admit that he has a good eye for style. From time to time he also helps me put together an outfit with pointers.
And you are right, a bit of height is what this outfit definitely needs.

  16. I love this all so much! Read and re-read and savored the pictures. I agree with Amanda and the others above! I love how you stay in touch with your friends too.

    1. Thanks Marian. All these reader comments tell me not to stop blogging (yet). There will come a time I presume, but as long as I can entertain you all, I’ll keep doing it.

  17. When we saw the NATO photo in the US, everyone was asking, “Who is the powerful woman in the beautiful outfit?” A stunning outfit that gave the impression of strength. We loved the photo. We/my group also loved that it made our so-called president look very small, but that is another topic.

I enjoy wearing linen and wear it a fair amount in the summer but I always end up feeling so wrinkled by the end of the day, which in my mind translates to messy. You do not look that way however. Was there some other material in the outfit in addition to linen? The color is perfect for a warm day.

    1. Our queen is indeed a powerful woman. One of her main causes is to empower women all over the world, mainly by micro financing. She helps them build up their own business and become independant. We adore her. She is pretty tall and she isn’t even Dutch.

  18. Beautiful outfit. Your shorts outfit is cute.

    1. The outfit has another benefit; it shields me from the burning sun. Something my shorts outfit won’t. Different outfits for different purposes and time.

  19. The outfit is perfect for you and you will style it so many different ways! I love seeing your perspective on Trump; he is definitely stirring things up.

    1. Don’t know about styling this outfit many different ways Nyla. So far, no ideas have sprung to mind. But let’s keep hope.

I love the blue outfit on you – with your height you can wear it really well – feels like a lovely airy confection to wear.

    1. I think you are right Angela, you do need a bit of height for this outfit, otherwise it might overwhelm you.
The extra benefit is that it shields your skin from the burning sun.

Really pretty suit to begin with, and brilliant cartoon to end with!

    1. Thanks Amanda. I fully agree.
