Jeans jacket

The jeans jacket is a recent purchase which I bought with Marjolein in Haarlem a couple of weeks ago. It has black plastic flowers on it which attracted me like a bear to honey. My mum used to say, “If there isn’t something extravagant going on with the garment, she won’t buy it”. That is not entirely true but I do get attracted to the unusual, the things that stand out. Which provides me with many attention seeking clothes that won’t go together because they compete with one another. The problem is that I cannot imagine how something “normal” will look on me when it hangs on a rack. I have to see it on someone or it has to have something extra.

Marjolein and I had arranged to go to a second-hand pop-up sale. If you keep the above in mind, you’ll know that I didn’t find anything. I looked and my mind went blank.

Below: Loved this Maje dress though. Timeless and wonderful. But black (not again) and sleeveless. So I didn’t even ask the size or the price. That is another thing of second-hand stuff. If you do find something you like, it often isn’t your size.

Below: Two more photos to give you an impression of the venue. It was too crowded.

Before we started to “do the rounds”, I asked Marjolein to take the blog photos. It was sunny and bright and you never know how long that will last.

Below: The sitting down pose. When I did my colour analysis, it was clear that the washed out denim colour near my face didn’t do me any favours (slightly depending on which shade). This is easily solved by my bright yellow earrings with silver button. For the coherence in my outfit, I am wearing my EIJK silver ankle boots and by advice of my dear husband, my yellow bracelets. Last week, I used the same ‘trick’ with my blue cardigan.

Below: Close-up.

Close-up of the jeans jacket

Below: The jeans seem to be straight legged in the first photo but as you can see, they are really wide legged. I want to wait to shorten the hem until I have worn them a couple of times and washed them. Experience taught me that they will ‘ride up with wear‘, a famous phrase from an old British TV series ‘Are you being served?
Further down you will read that I shouldn’t take them up at all, but let them stay as they are.

Below: Marjolein was dressed more colourful than me with her orange coat, receiving many compliments for it. She also got a new off-white bag. Ready for spring and summer.

Below: I, on the contrary, was wearing the brown leather jacket which you saw last week. I adore this jacket and also got many compliments. Women were asking me whether it was by Bottega Veneta. No, it is not, but I looked the jacket up on their website and it is quite similar. The price, however, is not haha. The one of Bottega Veneta is € 9,200 which is way, way, way above my budget.

Below: Marjolein ‘hacked’ (as it is called) her oversized shirt by putting a pin at the side and pulling one half of the shirt through it. She gave me two of these pins as a present. Sweet.

Marjolein with shirt hack

Below: Close-up of the pin hack. Because the shirt bit that she pulled through the pin, would never stay put, she secured it on the inside with a safety pin.

Below: I knew there were stairs at the side of the building which usually makes for a nice photo. Holding my jacket over my shoulder, pulled the side of my jeans jacket and made it look uneven.

Below: Then Marjolein said “Why don’t you pretend to come down the stairs?”
I am not good with stairs and my left knee still has arthrosis, so that is a hazardous request for me, especially when I cannot hold a banister. Can you tell haha?
These following two photos were too good not to show you.

Below: As for buildings, I haven’t got many this time and the two which I do have are very different from the old buildings which I usually show.

As we didn’t spend much time at the second-hand sale, we decided to continue at the TK Max store. Yes, we have one in The Hague. It used to be good, but prices have gone up and what they sell, isn’t that spectacular anymore. A shame.

Below: Marjolein tried on this coat (it was darker in reality) but decided against it. She also left two gorgeous winter coats in the shop. Not enough space for it.

Nice coat

Below: I bought this short trench coat by Michael (Michael Kors). Handy little thing. I am thinking of livening it up a bit with brooches or such. It is rather boring khaki. Or change the buttons?
My face in this photo clearly demonstrates why I always smile in my blog photos. No further explanation necessary.

What happened in my life this week

The weekend was supposed to be filled with entertainment in the sunshine, but a nasty throat ache plus a cold threw a spanner in the works. No photo shoot with Marjolein on the Saturday and no photo course on the Sunday morning. Instead, careful walks with Watson who had injured his paw with a split toenail.

Monday we took Watson to the vet and he had to stay to have the whole toenail removed under anaesthetics. We picked him up 3 hours later. He was in pain, not allowed to walk far or in mud or in the sea and he didn’t want to either. We hid the painkillers and the antibiotic pills in tasty sausage chunks and that worked fine.
The first day he was piteous, looking at me with his big brown eyes, breaking my heart. The next day he was getting perky again and walked on four legs for most of the time. Then on Wednesday the wound started bleeding again which resulted into panic with me. I sent photos to the vet and got word back that it wasn’t serious, not to worry, which I do so much anyway. Animals in pain really get to me. We will wait and see how this develops.

On the brighter side, Monday was Marianne’s birthday.

Below: Here is the birthday girl, all rosy.

Marianne on her birthday

Below: Marijke was also at Marianne’s birthday. Happy child.

Marijke at Marianne's birthday

Below: I was wearing last week’s outfit the way I think is best. With the lime yellow shirt, but with silver boots and my Dries van Noten bag. I was wearing a silver bracelet and blue earrings. I am on the hunt for lime yellow bracelets. Oh, and I am supposed to wear these trousers really long. I like it a lot, but at the back I put the hem up with a safety pin as I don’t want to damage the fabric by dragging the jeans across the floor.

The right outfit for the blue cardigan and black wide leg jeans

Below: A combination from my wardrobe last week but I didn’t like it much. It was sort of all right, but I have better options, like with the green and white striped top.

Orange pleather trousers with blue and white striped shirt

I saw Sylvia of 40PlusStyle, who came to Haarlem as she was over from Portugal. That Tuesday when we met, the beautiful sunny weather had changed to rain and drizzle again. Double bad luck as I had brought my camera to ask Sylvia for blog photos. We managed them in a 15 minutes’ break from the rain. Ugghh. It was lovely to see her again, but it would have been more fun if we could have sat on a terrace in the sun.

Ron is getting better and better and joins me on my daily dog walks. It will take a couple of weeks, I think, before he can do it on his own again. He has to be able to drive.

And I have gone back to my pelvic floor physiotherapist. In 2023 her exercises helped me a lot. I was down to 1 little drop loss a month. Great result. We decided that one exercise a day would be enough to maintain that result. That was a mistake. Of course, two months later I had that tumor removed from my urethra and had to recover from that which didn’t help. The loss got gradually worse and worse. So, on the 5th of February I went back to the therapist and it is amazing to experience what result I already achieved in a month. Which means I have to keep up the exercises three times a day for the rest of my life. I gladly will. Some people might find this TMI (Too Much Information) but I want to share these things as it might help someone else. Why shouldn’t we talk about it?

Did the tax returns for us both. I am always very quick with that.

Below: Another outfit I wore this week, my oversized orange blazer. I wore it buttoned up this time as the jeans showed tummy and the top was tight. Together that was a bit too much and wearing the blazer buttoned up solved it.

My little hairpiece isn’t to my liking anymore. I have to fuss with it far too much; it had lost quite a lot of hair. So, I went back to the salon to assess whether it could be fixed or whether I needed a new one. The one that I have is only a year old. Makes this an expensive business.
To be continued.

Below: At the moment time is lacking to do much with photography, but I did see this opportunity. Spring flower in the park. And I think that is Watson at the right, photobombing.

  1. Hello Greetje,
A real nice jeans jacket that you bought. I bought one too, two weeks ago when I had a shopping tour with my sister. I once had a blue jeans jacket but gave it away in a moment of brain fog….and the brown leather jacket is also a highlight. And give a compliment to Majolein, she also looks very good.
    Have a wonderful time
    Violetta

    1. I will pass your compliment on to Marjolein, for sure.
Giving your jeans jacket away must have indeed been a moment of brain fog. I have those too.

You are wearing some very attractive jackets. The brown one is my favorite but the denim is special too. Sorry to read about Watson’s paw. Hope he is well soon. I am imagining it would be like us having a nail removed. Hurt! Our weather has been all over the place. Warm, cold, windy–lots of ups and downs.

    1. I was doubtful for a while (and worried) but Watson is back to his old self again. Ron is taking him for his walks now. My tasks are getting less and less. Hurray.

I love all the outfits unfortunately I wouldn’t be able to wear the jeans turned up like that. I am to short 5ft3&1/2 inches tall and they would look funny on me on you they look great. I also love the ideas with the brooches I have several of them and had not thought of doing this it’s a great tip. We have several thrift stores near us and it’s great for when you want to clean out the closet of some things you don’t wear any more. One of the shops takes things on consignment so you can get some money for your things. It looked like your shop was very busy. So sorry about watson hope he is doing much better now and hope you and Ron are keeping well also. Keep posting as I love reading all your blogs.

  4. Ohhhh the brown jacket is perfection, always love a good denim jacket and the pops of color near your face are just right. My favorite on you is the orange blazer and the dark denim! Such a great color and fit! Can you please tell me about the shoes? Or are they boots? Or sneakers?
Very cool look! I want it!
P.S Love all parts of your posts, including health bits. Keep ’em coming 🙂

    1. Thank you for your many compliments. You would make a person shy. I am glad you love all parts of my posts. I just write it as it pops up in my head.
The shoes I am wearing with my orange blazer and the dark jeans are sneakers by an Italian brand, AMA Brand Deluxe, but I bought them a couple of years ago. Sorry. I never push any products so inspiration is all I can offer you.
This is the link to their website. https://www.ama-brand.com/ But they don’t sell online.
In this post you can get a clearer view of the sneaker: https://www.nofearoffashion.com/2020/04/yellow-jacket/

  5. Your denim jacket is fabulous. Do the plastic flowers mean it can’t be washed? The yellow accents are great. Matchy matchy is the way to go!

    1. You are right, I just checked and the jacket is dry clean only. I should check those labels BEFORE I buy something. Mind you, even if I had known, I still would have bought it haha.
Is matchy matchy in fashion again??

Now I have a little project to try ! Marjolein’s creative idea to reduce the fabric on an oversized shirt. I have a soft fern green stripe that needs that sort of tucking to create more of a waist on it. I so often buy something to wear while sailing on one of our large ferries that move people and vehicles from these islands to mainland BC here. And then I discover something’s not quite right. This should sort out that particular problem.
Spring is nearly here…rain, sun…repeat. Got a few hours in the tiny front door garden to trim, tidy and plant.
Job done…but so wanted a long soak in a deep tub afterwards for weary muscles…but only a large shower in my smaller home…so must not whine!
I find the term” too much information “ is often rather demeaning and used to embarrass the speaker. As I too have a pelvic floor issue…groaning pain after standing more than 2 hours … so no part time job in a local boutique for me … and knowing everything important inside is where it should be, I still wouldn’t mind more information. At 75, I definitely require extra ‘ coverage’ before heading out walking now, since somehow there’s always something in the bladder that likes to quietly surprise me enroute. Might be tied to pelvic floor or residual damage after kidney stone removal. Or just simply aging! On the fashion front…liking your new outfit combos . With the trench, because I have always liked good quality tortoise shell buttons, I would go for a brooch instead. I am a mini magpie… love colour, especially in scarves, and my collection is currently being edited…but with difficulty . Hope spring ,with more sunshine and warmth, is coming to Haarlem soon.

    1. I agree that we should talk to one another about these femal issues, otherwise we’d never get wiser.
If you are used to a bath and like it, I am sure you will miss it after a few hours of gardening. Alas.
Replacing the buttons on the trench coat is easy. We have a fabulous button shop in Amsterdam.
I am editing my wardrobe as well. Not an easy job at all.

  7. Marianne looks beautiful, and her outfit is just lovely. Puddle pants that droop on the floor are in, again. I remember wearing jeans that dragged the floor in the 70s, even when wearing platform shoes, lol. The frayed look was desirable then, but not practical or to my liking now. Smart move to pin the back hem. Thanks to Marjolein for her brooch and shirt hack. I will try it. The new trench looks fab on you, but yes, a few brooches or festive buttons would not go amiss. Glad Ron is steadily improving! Poor Watson. He needs some treats.

    1. We all learn from each other and we inspire one another. That is so nice about social media. It has its downs but that is definitely an up.
Watson is a bit better today so I have high hopes. And he was given his medicine in his most loved treat, so no shortage of treats.

  8. The denim jacket with the flowers is very you. I think when it’s warmer, you could also add color with a bright tee shirt or blouse underneath. And your woven leather jacket is fabulous!

I love Marjolein’s blouse styling trick and will have to try it with one of my brooches!

Poor Watson! It’s so hard when our animals are suffering. I hope he’s feeling better soon.

    1. I will DM you a close-up of the kind of brooch/pin Marjolein has used.
And fortunately Watson seemed a bit better today. Finally. I was getting so worried.

  9. Love the jean jacket with the flowers on it! So different, and so cool, I have seen Marjolein’s trick with pin elsewhere, but her version is the first one I liked. So clever.
Your oufit is great, and I love the yellow jewelry with it. Great flower shot too.
So glad Ron is getting better.

    1. I loved the flowers on the jeans jacket. Then I came home and thought “Why didn’t I buy just a plain jacket? Why does it always have to have embellishment or such?” Then I put it on for this photo shoot, saw the photos and was sooo happy.
Thank you for all your compliments.

  10. Love love love the leather jacket! And the cardigan too actually, I’m going through a cardigan phase at the moment
Glad that both your boys are on the mend 🙂

    1. I so agree with you on the leather jacket. I feel soooo cool.
The cardigan is another great purchase, and the black jeans too. That was a lucky shopping day.

  11. The brown leather jacket looks great, but how did you tie the scarf? It looks terrific, but complicated.

    1. I am sorry Virginia, I have absolutely no idea how I tied the scarf. I think in a sort of a loose knot? I am terrible at tying a scarf. It wasn’t complicated, believe me.

  12. Such a great post today Greetje! I bought a t-shirt with little black things on it like your jacket. I liked it until I wore it. Haha. Better on a jacket. I would get a stencil and fabric paint and spice up that Michael Kors jacket! I did that on a jean jacket and it came out great. Love all your jeans. I never find ones like that here which surprises me. The shirt trick with the pin is stellar! Thank you for sharing. I have to find a pin that will work that way. Happy Ron is getting better with each day and so sad about Watson. He, too, will be ok I am sure. You sharing about health concerns is a good thing. Always do that. At 84 I don’t have that problem yet but may in the future so your solution is good to know. It is 90-100 degrees here today in Los Angeles, CA. Very, very hot!! Too soon I say!!!

    1. I often have that…liking it until I wear it. Just wear it, is my advice, the feeling might come back. It has happened to me so often.
Your stencil and fabric paint is a fab idea, but I don’t want a pattern. I might change my mind if I see yours; send me a photo?
      Hope you can keep cool.

  13. Enjoyable and informative post as usual.
I have jus bought the ROTATE cardigan !!!!

    1. It’s a lovely cardigan 🥰

      1. Isn’t it just? Love it. So arty.

    2. Oh great, inspiration!! Enjoy the cardigan.

  14. I like the embellished jean jacket! I’m thinking that a person could do something like that by adding some decorative buttons to a plain jacket. I might have to keep that in mind!

    1. You are very right, but I have done the brooches on jacket before and this was just easy to buy.

Im with you.. give me all the extras…we always say we are like Magpie birds because we like all the sparkle and glitz!!

    Jodie

    1. Hahahaha…yep, you are right.

  16. I really like the yellow jewelry whenever/however you wear it. It adds an element of surprise.

    1. And also an element of light and bright. I can overdo it though…making it too matchy matchy.

  17. Love this outfit on you!

    1. Every time I see the photo, I think the same; “Oh, lovely” haha.

  18. Hello, You

Love the new jeans! But yes, be careful with the length, you/we don’t want any tripping over! The new denim jacket is nice too – for you. It would have to lose its bits were it mine! Now, I think ‘your dear husband’ has got it wrong! Sorry, Ron (not!🙃). Your yellow earrings and bracelet are lovely and liven up your outfit, but I’d prefer either/or: either the earrings or the bracelet. They’re a touch too matchy-matchy when worn together and look as if you’re trying too hard, and you don’t need to do that. As ever, just saying…

And also just saying what an artistic photo that is of the Spring flower. Very pretty!

Sorry about Watson but glad he’s improving, as is your ‘dear husband’!

    Have a good week.
    Gee

    1. Oh yes, that is true…the tripping over. I’ll be careful.
I know about the yellow…being matchy matchy is something I always fall for and you are right, it doesn’t look good when you are trying too hard.
I cannot seem to shake it.
The spring flower photo was a good shot. I was pleased with myself.

  19. That jacket is very cute, (the denim, but the brown outer jacket is too). I love the pops of yellow and you are right, they definitely brighten up your face. I hope Watson is fully recovered from his nail removal. Never be ashamed to share the hard bits of life, such as health issues. We are human after all and all struggle with one thing or another! I always enjoy all your pictures, outings, and outfits!

    1. That is all very good to hear Amy. I have often heard the comment Too Much Information, when I was still working, but it never stopped me haha.
      Thanks for your support.

  20. Yes, the denim jacket looks good on you. The Maje dress is absolutely gorgeous, I love it, what a shame you didn’t keep it. I already said it, but I’ll say it again, I like your yellow jewelry. Marjolein’s solution for her shirt was very original. I love your two photos with the scared face!

    1. Thanks Josep-Maria. You know I’ll do anything (well…a lot of things) for a laugh.
