Wide stone wash blue trousers and a Royal Palace tour

Stone wash blue trousers

Wide stone wash blue trousers

Me and my friend Jeanne decided to “do” the tour of the Royal Palace in Amsterdam. It was on both our bucket lists. Be prepared for many photos while I vicariously take you with us.

It was a wonderful sunny summer day which shows Amsterdam at its best. I decided to wear my wide stone wash blue trousers to stay cool. This time I combined it with my gifted Vivienne Westwood blouse instead of with the matching long jacket. It is called ice blue in the post with the original outfit. I loved the shoes with the trousers in the original outfit but they made me trip on my face and shoulder so violently, that I now decided on less pointy shoes.
The Vivienne Westwood blouse you have seen with jeans in this post.

Below: The outside of the Royal Palace facing the Dam; the stone is in need of a clean, but the roof and the Atlas statue on the roof are recently restored.
Just like Delft last week, Amsterdam was quite empty. Even half the amount of pigeons were away on holiday. Only a lonely seagull in this photo haha.

Outside the Royal Palace in Amsterdam

The Palace was originally built as City Hall and designed by architect Jacob van Campen in the time period 1648-1665. Amsterdam had great ambitions in those days.
The white marble reliefs and sculptures were crafted by Artus Quellinus (and his assistants) like most of them in the building.

Below: This hall was the Tribunal where high judges passed death sentences in public.

Below: Entrance into the big hall. So impressive.

Below: There are three of such marble world maps on the floor in the main hall, created around 1742-1746, symbolising wealth, trade and worldwide ambition of Amsterdam during the Golden Age.

Below: I also looked up at the ceiling and the lamp in the main hall.
You will see many ceilings and lamps in this post. I was mesmerised by them.

Below: At the exit of the main hall, another Atlas carrying the world on his shoulders, different from the one on the roof. All the marble figures above the exit symbolise something. Lady Justice in the middle holding a sword, trampling the personifications of Ignorance, Greed and Envy.

Below: I went left, into a corridor, again with such a magnificent lamp and ceiling. Also wall paintings everywhere.

Below: This lamp was on the wall of the corridor. Wouldn’t mind it in my own corridor. Mind you…I have been thinking about cleaning these lamps. Who does that and how? I think if I had to do it, I would tremble with fear of breaking, making me totally unfit for the job.

Below: A 17th-century Japanese lacquer cabinet from the Edo period (c. 1670). On a video we saw that behind the two doors lies an interior with numerous small drawers, designed to store valuables and curiosities.

Below: Me and Jeanne and an antique mirror. I really shouldn’t take such photos haha.

Me and Jeanne at the Royal Palace

Below: Another ceiling and another lamp. I forgot the story about the painting. To tell you the truth I forgot all stories about the paintings. Beautiful as they may be, they do not keep my interest.

Royal Palace in Amsterdam

The curtains in all the rooms were closed as not to let sunlight harm the fabrics, the paintings etc.

Below: The story about this room was funny (to me). This is a bedroom and apparently, this room is now used for guests of the Dutch Royal family. However, the bed which you can see on the right (I wrote BED on it), is far too small for people these days. So, the palace staff replaces the antique bed with a modern bed for the duration of the stay.

Below: This is another bedroom, the one of Louis Bonaparte when he lived at the palace for a while.
You should read about Louis Bonaparte, the King of Holland on Wikipedia. (The Netherlands were called Holland in those days.)
Louis was good for the people of our country, which was entirely not to the liking of his brother Napoleon who intended for Holland to be little more than a puppet state. But Louis was determined to be as independent as possible and became quite popular amongst his new people.

I hope you enjoyed the Royal Palace tour.

Question: If it was too much, let me know.
So far I only ever got comments saying there can never be too many photos, but if you are a reader who disagrees with that, please speak up and tell me your opinion in the comments at the end of this post.

We ventured outside and had a coffee nearby at De Drie Graefjes. They have the best cakes and really good coffee. Just know that if you order a cake, you will get an enormous slice; well…enormous for Dutch standards.

Below: Jeanne at De Drie Graefjes after seeing the size of her cake.

Below: We walked on to the Dam square in front of the Royal Palace where a street artist was entertaining us.

Of course we headed to the Nine Streets. Although the quirky little shops are slowly being taken over by the chain stores, the little shops are still there. Won’t be long before this beautiful part of Amsterdam will be ruined because of money.

Below: The black Vivienne Westwood blouse has little blue stars with sparkles. I deliberately chose the bulky belt for the juxtaposition. The bag is an Etsy purchase from so many years ago. It is certainly vintage. The fabric shoes are H&M, from years ago and don’t give me any blisters. Mind you, they don’t give any support either. The nose of the shoe is short enough not to make me trip.

What happened in my life this week

Finally, it started raining from the weekend on. Mind you, to get the water back to a normal level in the rivers, canals and ditches it has to rain significantly more. Temperatures are back to normal.

Below: Ron found this gnome years ago in the woods. He took it home and in the night we hoisted it over the fence (2 metres high) and put it in the neighbours’ garden. Killing ourselves laughing with the thought of their faces when they were to have breakfast, looking out of the window and seeing this giant gnome in their garden. Our gardens have no access other than through the house so how did it get there? But the neighbours know us and I guess it didn’t take them long to come up with the perpetrators.

When I was leaning out of the window at the back the other day, I saw our neighbour clearing out his shed and out came the gnome. We had a good chuckle remembering the event. He didn’t know what to do with it and I suggested, he’d put it by the side of the canal near our houses. The people who live there, have joined forces planting all sorts of plants and flowers by the side of the canal and maintain it well. It is not really allowed but the city tolerates it as long as it is maintained.

In the evening I wanted to get the gnome back and place it at the neighbour’s front door with a note saying he was homesick and could he come back. But the canal residents had already adopted the gnome, placed it a bit further up the road and secured it so it couldn’t be stolen. They really like him.
These are things I live for.

Gnome

Other things I live for are the everyday encounters with people. Like I went into the greengrocer this week and the owner (around the age of 50 I think, although she looks younger), was music playing from a very famous Amsterdam artist, André Hazes.
Background:
In every Amsterdam bar, especially in the eighties, you could hear André’s songs blasting. The songs are simple and invite to sing along, which everybody always did, at the top of their lungs.

So, when I stepped into the greengrocer shop and heard the music, the owner and I immediately burst out singing together at the top of our lungs, waving arms. We also sang the quirky repeats in the song. It was so funny and so connecting. (For the Dutch, it was the song ‘Een vriend’. Remember ‘….was jij zo hard en zo gemeen? ZO GEMEEN!)

Below: On Saturday Anke, Sabine and I were to go out on one of our Shopping Saturday tours, but poor Sabine wasn’t feeling well so it fell through. Instead Anke came downtown with me for a coffee. We didn’t buy anything which is a miracle.

Anke

Below: Monday outfit. Not my finest outfit but I was going to get a pedicure and needed to wear these shoes as they weren’t going to damage the fresh nail polish on my toes. Starting point of the outfit was the pink of the shoes. Hideous sandals (IMO), even in pink, but boy, are they comfortable.

Polka dot shirt with pink trousers

Below: Another outfit this week. Pink was the colour of the week. Multicoloured earrings (Lara Design), jeans Denham and sequinned trainers (old Essentiel Antwerp).

Till next week.

  1. Loved all the photos!! We’ve not toured the palace in many years so hopefully we can this year (our trip is still “up in the air”…which isn’t good as we usually arrive right when the school break happens). I’m in love with the blue jacket!! I LOVE blue!

P.S. I can’t imagine walking for hours in A’dam in pointy shoes!!!

    1. I don’t know which blue jacket you mean. The long one that came with the trousers? Hopefully, you’ll make it to Amsterdam. Although the rainy season has finally started you can never know what the weather will be like here in the Netherlands.
The shoes weren’t that pointy. They look very pointy but I had more than enough room for my toes in the shoes. The fact that they offered no support whatsoever did me in though. I was knackered when I got home.

  2. Thank you for sharing all the photos. I love looking at all of them.
The gnome is cute! I’m glad he has found a new home. When we were at the Rijksmuseum in December we found a tiny gnome in the grass outside. It had a note that said to take it take a few photos and put an instagram hashtag to share. And then leave it somewhere else with the note. My sons had a fun time doing this and now the gnome has found it’s way to others. The gnome has traveled all over the world. Such fun!

    1. Your gnome story is indeed great fun. It reminds me of the ‘yellow skirt’ that was sent from blogger to blogger and had to be styled by the person who received it, add something to the skirt and send it on to the next one. No idea what became of it. You can read about it in the following link and adding to your memories, Ron and I photographed my turn with the yellow skirt in the Rijksmuseum.

  3. Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I loved all the photos and would have been taking the ones of the ceilings and lamps, too! I still think you must be one of the most stylish women in The Netherlands! I love every outfit (though I do agree about those sandals). You really look fabulous in pink! I also loved the polka dot belt! So very cool! And, the gnome…what a fun time he has had! I hope everyone who sees him appreciates his good humor!

    1. Oh I am definitely not one of the most stylish women in the Netherlands, but I do try to climb that ladder haha.
Bringing joy and laughter to people is what I live for. I like to tell jokes and funny stories and make people laugh. Makes me laugh too.

  4. Never too many photos, Greetje! Love the palace tour, the cute hours, the canal, the people, and your friends.
The story of the gnome is hilarious, as is you and the shopkeeper singing. Love it!

    1. Thank you for your vote. Glad my blog posts still amuse you, you loyal reader.
Things like the gnome prank and the shopkeeper sing-a-long is what I LOVE. They give me so much joy.

  5. I like your gnome story. Even if there are a lot of photos in the post, we can scroll past if we aren’t interested but I would think most people enjoy them. My cousin has a jewelry store on the Hartenstraat in Amsterdam, BLGK edelsmeden, which must of be near the Nine Streets. I have only been there twice as I live in Canada. Enjoyed your post as always!

    1. You are right, the majority votes for many photos.
Oh lovely, I know BLGK edelsmeden. My husband bought my second wedding ring there when I complained that the first one, wasn’t an actual wedding ring and pretty small. They do lovely things.

  6. Never too many photos. Loved these this week. I actually have a big book of world ceilings that I love but none of this particular palace are in it–they missed some great ones. And agree with everyone on the outfits of this week. Thank you for sharing.

    1. Thank you for your vote. Many photos is still favourite.
I have learned that in an old historic city I should look up. A bit dangerous but you see the rarest things.

  7. I dream of pranking someone with a garden gnome haha

    1. Try and find one at a charity shop.

  8. Loved the Royal Palace tour, the gnome story and a week of pink! Keep it all coming it’s so enjoyable to sit down with a cuppa and lap up your post.

    1. My posts have become quite long and I think that appeals to people who have the time to read it. So I guess, I won’t have many young working women as readers haha. But who knows; the age demographics of my blog indicates that 57% of my readers is 55+ and 43% is 54-, but that is only of a small percentage (7%) of my readers. Of 93% the age is unknown. Don’t worry, these are abstract numbers, they are not linked to an individual reader.

      1. Yes, I fit into the older demographic, ha ha! When I was working, I wouldn’t even have considered reading something like this. Nowadays I get plenty of interesting weekly emails and summaries, but there are only two I always read, and yours is one of them 🙂
Social media keeps shifting, but I think atm blog posts, are similar to Substack, and generally attract an audience that’s interested in long form content. If people are more focussed on quicker stuff, they’ll probably drift to short form content like Insta instead.

        1. Catherine, I am very flattered to be one of the two you always read. Your observation of blog post and Substack and their audiences, is probably quite right. And to be honest, when I was still working, I wouldn’t have had to time to write such lengthy posts. I started in 2012 with only 2 or 3 photos and 1 paragraph haha.

  9. I love your Amsterdam adventures and they often give me some ideas of where to go next when I visit Amsterdam. Last year when I was back in NL I went to the Straat museum. Next time the Royal Palace might be on the list. Hearing you talk about singing along to Andre Hazes almost made me a bit homesick, haha. Love your outfits as well.

    1. I take it you are Dutch and emigrated. See, those little moments where you share a history with a total stranger, like with the André Hazes song, are the things that would stop me from emigrating. I couldn’t do without them, I live for such moments.
If you are interested, below is my blog post about the STRAAT museum. Of course they change the exhibition pieces, but perhaps you like to visit that post.

  10. I’m a fan of the many photos in your posts, and this is a particularly charming series. Please keep it up!

I also love the gnome story.

    1. OK, noted. So far (until Sunday evening my time) everybody is in favour of many photos and one is a little indifferent.
The gnome story was to make you laugh. I think I succeeded in that.

  11. Hurray another outing with you and your friends. I loved all the outfits you and your friends wore you all looked so stylish. I especially liked the the pink outfit and sandals. The pictures of the royal palace are wonderful especially the ceilings, the floor and the paintings. Have you ever met the royal family? Your husband is so funny I laughed at the story about the cute gnome I wouldn’t mind one in my garden. Can’t wait for the next outing!

    1. OK…you are the fifth reader who especially likes the pink outfit and sandals. How do you all do that? The one I think is less nice, you all pick as favourite.
No, I have never met the royal family and I don’t think I ever will either. My husband is indeed funny. He always makes me laugh. Told the gnome story to let you laugh as well.

  12. Judy in Arizona Avatar

Love the Denham jeans. Must say, you always have a wonderful spunky Attitude and sense of humour that I truly appreciate. The gnome is great fun. Also a great eye for fashion the way you mix things up. I also follow your friend Susan in California. Cheers…keep entertaining us!

    1. When I read your comment I feel proud but also get this sense of “Is she really talking about me? “A great eye for fashion and the way I mix things up”?
Haha, I don’t see myself like that but I guess women often think less of themselves. Which we shouldn’t do. Just accept the compliment and gracefully say Thank you.

  13. Greetje, I also vote on the side of more, rather than fewer photos! We were in Amsterdam in March 2023, and toured the Royal Palace. So impressive, and I also can’t resist taking photos of lovely ceilings, lamps and sculptures. I had contacted you with a question prior to our trip, and so enjoyed our time in the Nine Streets area, based on your recommendation, I had to laugh at your comment about the big slice of cake. We had huge servings of delicious apple pie at Winkel 43!!!

    1. Thank you for your vote. I am counting all of them.
I am really glad my recommendation of the Nine Streets was to your liking. And indeed, at Winkel 43 they serve enormous apple pies. I still prefer the one on the other corner, further to the church, but that is more because they serve nice and quick. Apple pie is the same, perhaps slightly smaller.

  14. I love all the photos and I love the bright pink pants. Also, I think your friend Jeanne looks pretty in her mint green outfit !

    1. You are the fourth reader who likes the pink trouser outfit. I am going crazy. The one outfit I think is so so, is a hit with my readers.
And yes, Jeanne bought a really nice outfit with that mint green set.

  15. I’m with SJ. The pink trousers are fab. Love the Gnome story. What fun your mate is.
    Never too many photos.
    Lynda

    1. You funny women…liking an outfit I don’t. But hey, it wasn’t that bad either. I threw in the gnome story for a laugh. My husband is indeed a very humourous guy. Thank you for your photo amount vote.

  16. I love your stories of family and neighborhood life. And the photos, they make me slow down and notice details. You focus on different things than I would like chandeliers! But I also wonder about how these old palaces are cleaned — the dust? How are they dusted?

I very much like the wide blue pants, but I’m not sure about the belt. Did you try unbelted?

    1. I think cleaning is done with a large staff, but I will try and find out.
The blue trousers with the belt is just one way of styling it. Unbelted felt a bit unfinished. But there are so many ways I could style it (she said, not knowing how haha). Remember I like contrast.

  17. Hello from Montana USA. Never too many photos- I love seeing all of Amsterdam thru your eyes and your adventures with your friends. The Palace photos are just spectacular. I loved the gnome story!

    1. Thank you for your photo amount vote. Counting all of them.
One of the best things about this blog, is that it gets me off my bum and do something, like finding something interesting to show and photographing an outfit. I am always with a friend, which is really nice. The gnome story is there to make you smile or even laugh.

  18. Love love LOVE the wide legged trousers with the chunky belt and the shoes too! Perfection! The palace looks amazing and the descriptions are brilliant. I never think there are too many photos and love it all, but I also enjoy your stories like the one about the gnome. Your whole blog makes me smile and I look forward to all of it! Keep it up!

    1. Oh glad you said that. I like wide trousers too, but I will be glad when this fashion is out of style. So dangerous.
Thank you for your photo amount vote.
The gnome story is good, right? I thought I could amuse you guys with it. Anything for a laugh. The main goal of my blog is to make people smile or even laugh. So thank you for telling me that.

  19. Greetje, I’ll have to vote on the “more photos good” side of the ballot. I love seeing the architecture and scenery. The Palace is fascinating.

I don’t think those sandals are terrible, just a different “vibe” than your usual. But sometimes comfort is everything. And I love the big pants!

    1. Thank you for your vote. I am noting them all down.
Indeed the sandals aren’t really my vibe but boy oh boy are they comfortable. Funny thing is that two readers told me they liked that outfit best haha.

  20. I love all your photos! I agree with the other comments about having a mini-tour through them.
Thanks for all your lovely posts!

    1. I am glad to give you all a mini tour. After all, social media is all about sharing, right?

  21. I love the palace photos and stories. Is the palace still occupied?

The gnome is adorable and I love his history. What fun.

I love the pink pants and polka dot shirt. For me, big baggy pants and pants dragging the ground are out.

    1. Yes, the palace is still occupied but not all the time. There is a staff and the King and Queen will be there if there are important guests from abroad, who will also stay at this palace. Rest of the time the palace is open for the public to see; well, only the ground floor.
Glad you liked the gnome story; I love to let people laugh.
And OK, you are another lover of the pink trousers with the polka dot shirt. I just will never understand.

  22. I LOVE the pink trousers with the polka dot top! With red shoes I think it’s my next inspo! (You look super svelte in that pic btw).

I don’t think I’ve ever read one of your blogs and thought there were too many photos. They are always great quality pics and it’s like having a mini trip somewhere without having to change out of my pyjamas xx

    1. Oh you funny woman. The outfit I think is so so, you get inspired by. I just never know what will be a success and what won’t. Thanks for your input on the photo amount.

  23. You’ve really taken a liking to wide-legged, voluminous trousers, haven’t you? These are spectacular, and the blouse you’ve paired them with is truly beautiful. The royal palace is fantastic, with truly beautiful architecture and decor.
Ah, sometimes I think there are too many photos in your posts, but since they’re really beautiful, I don’t mind.

    1. I agree with you, I think there are too many photos in a post too. But I want to give the readers what they want (as long as it doesn’t go against my own beliefs). Then again, I think, if it is too much for someone, just scroll on. But I will gather the opinions I asked for this time.
Wide-legged voluminous trousers are the ones you can buy now, but I hope they will go out of fashion again. They are good for my figure but they are dangerous to wear.
