It took me years but I finally had this black trouser suit with wide legs altered. It used to be great with high heeled boots (as you can see in this post) but I hardly wear high heels anymore. It is just not practical in my current life. Seeing as suits with trainers are highly fashionable, why not go with the flow and shorten the trouser legs? I love the casual vibe of the suit now.
Wearing a T-shirt underneath instead of a silk shirt, also helps the outfit to be more casual. This T-shirt (Dare not to care) was made by my niece. She and her husband design, print and sell T-shirts in a very sustainable manner. This one was a special request by me. It doesn’t mean you have to be indifferent to the world, it means ‘do your own thing and don’t care what others think of it’. It’s a punchy orangy red shade and coincidently, matches the bag perfectly.
It was a rare sunny day and Ron understood the importance of using good weather for a shoot. I suggested we’d go to a different market than the one on the big square. The market we went to is called the Botermarkt (butter market). See more photos on Tripadvisor here.
Below: On Wednesdays there is a flea market, on Fridays an organic market and on Saturday a normal market. Don’t you just love this assortment of bread?
Below: We took some delicious olive bread home.
First we had a coffee and later a lunch at café De Roemer. They are going to be my preferred place from now on. Great cappuccino, great lunch, excellent terrace, adorable bathroom and last but certainly not least, fantastic staff. And they are so hard to find these days.
Below: My darling husband. We had the cappuccino in the conservatory, but when we came back for lunch, we had to sit indoors, which was no punishment.
Below: On to Van de Pigge, a pharmacy at the edge of the market. Their naturopathic knowledge, the history of their brand and their antique shop from 1849 make it a very special place with outstanding products.
I decided to button up the jacket.
Below: There is a dotted white line around the edges of the jacket and on the side of the trousers. Great detail. The brand of the suit is Piazza Sempione.
The brand of the bag is Marck & Mo. I had a look around their website and nearly all bags are out of stock, and their last Instagram post was in 2021…hmmm, something tells me they are no longer in business.
Below: A little look around the pharmacy. These spices aren’t for decoration, they are actually for sale.
Below: They are many of these heads in and outside the shop. They used to be the trademark for pharmacy in the old days. They are called ‘gaper‘(translation is yawner).
Below: As I left the shop, I got a Christmas star decoration as a present. The artist was sitting on a hay bale, wreathing this. I was so pleased with this act of kindness.
Below: At home I took a proper photo of it. Simple, but fun and a sweet gesture.
Below: We strolled around the market (me without a coat because of the photos…brrrr) and at the fish stand a woman said to me, “I recognise you as I follow your blog”. I was delighted, finally I am famous haha.
Then she said, “You featured me on your blog a few years back as well.” I looked at her and then I knew. I had photographed her with a bicycle ten years ago. Bingo! My memory is very good. Click this link to a Street Style post from 2014 if you want to see her with the bike. You have to scroll down as she is the last woman featured in this post, the one with the red pumps.
Below: Back at the restaurant De Roemer I sat outside on the terrace for a short while, searching for my glasses.
Below: This is a proper shot of the bag and the T-shirt.
Below: A close-up of the pearl earrings by Lara Design.
Below: On my way into the restaurant, I complimented this young lady in the conservatory with her fabulous hair. It so happened she had it dyed lighter the day before. Such thick and long hair. To die for.
Below: We had lunch and I checked the photos. De Roemer is an old establishment which I love.
Below: Ron took this photo of himself in the door window. He loves the photo so I added it.
What happened in my life this week
On Saturday I met Sylvia of 40+Style (see below) as she was back in the Netherlands for the holidays.
Below: We had an extended lunch at café De Jaren in Amsterdam. It’s a great place when you are in the centre of Amsterdam. Very impressive and in summer they have this terrace overlooking a small canal and the Amstel canal, best view ever.
Sunday it was pouring down with rain and I did diddly squat apart from the blog and household chores.
Monday I drove my car to the garage for my 8 o’clock appointment. They replaced the oil lid and looked at another light up on my dashboard, saying “Brakes need service”. The car was making an awful sound every time I hit the brakes. The sound stopped halfway to the garage (typical). They looked into that as well, but apart from some indicators that needed to be calibrated, they couldn’t find anything wrong with the breaks. Gives me an uneasy feeling.
I did some Christmas nuts shopping and ate a bar of nougat as the shop sold that too. I am a sucker for nougat and fudge.
Did manage to do my fitness exercises after kicking myself in the butt.
Tuesday was a quiet day but still fun at the same time. One of our new neighbours in the street (Americans), came to our house with her daughter and offered us home baked cookies. Such a nice gesture. These cookies happen to be the ones I love most. When Nicky (bonus daughter) was young she used to bake these cookies with Ron all the time. Delicious.
That afternoon Ron and I tried to make coffee with the antique silver coffee maker (below). Ron knew how it worked but we needed to get the proportions right. First attempt proved we added too little coffee. Second attempt the coffee didn’t go back from the glass cylinder into the silver one. You have to be patient as it takes a while before the water boils. It worked reasonably well at the fourth attempt, with 17 scoops of coffee haha.
Below: I was wearing this outfit that day. See link to original post. Comfy and well-dressed at the same time, a combination which is getting more important as I get older.
Below: I wanted to wear this on the 25th of December when our friends Georg and Marla came round for a Christmas dinner. Alas, husband rejected the outfit. He thought it was too classic, too old-fashioned, not me. In my heart I had to agree. So this is now the ‘rejected Christmas outfit‘.
Below: Instead I wore this. I took the photo from the original post as it was too dark to take another bedroom mirror photo. I managed to get some stains on the blazer…
Ron had cooked a superb 6 course Christmas dinner; I was so impressed. Below is the dessert.
Below: On the 25th of December (called 2nd Christmas Day in the Netherlands), we went to Ron’s daughter and her family and I wore this. A combination of a jumper you’ve seen before and my leopard print trousers.
Below: Snuggling with Evy trying to get her to burp. I failed in that.
Below: Zoë is ‘walking the dog’. Grandpa led the procession to make sure nothing went wrong.
It was great to see the family again and we were showered with food and drinks. Another happy Christmas Day.
Friday was a day of rest. I hope you had a lovely Christmas too. Wishing you all a very happy New Year.
Greetje
Happy New Year! I think you did really well styling the suit for a more casual look. The coffee machine looks like quite a Rube Goldberg contraption, but glad you were able to get it to work.
We got the coffee machine to work but 17 scoops of coffee for 4 cups is really ridiculous. Something tells me we are not going to use it much. But it added to the Christmas atmosphere. I looked up Rube Goldberg machine haha. I can see why it reminded you of it, but this coffee machine is really quite simple but the explanation seems very difficult.
You put water into the silver container and light the burner underneath it. As soon as the water boils, it will go via the little pipe into the glas container with the coffee. When all the water is in the class container, a vacuum will have formed in the silver container, hereby ‘sucking’ the coffee back in through the pipe with which the water was transferred. Because there is a sieve at the end of the pipe just liquid gets through. Are you still with me? Simple physics.
Hi Greetje, so nice to meet you again after 10! Years and that you remembered the old picture. Your file is also on point with the link in the blog.
And yes you are famous! Thanks for the lovely pictures.
Oh how lovely, Annemiek, you commented. I hugely surprised myself by recognising you so quickly after 10 years. When I was searching for your photo of 10 years ago in my Street Style posts, I saw many women with bikes and I was getting a bit nervous. Did I get it right? And there you were…yes I got it right.
Thank you very much for being a good sport and a reader of my blog posts.
Happy New Year.
Great suit and I love the bag! The red/orange interior sides are wonderful and the leather texture is very attractive.
The breads look delicious. I almost always go for an olive loaf. Can’t get enough of olives.
The colorful check pattern on the floor of the restaurant is fantastic. I would have spent a good amount of time taking photos of that.
Glad that you had a happy Christmas (day one and day two). Happy New Year to you and your loved ones.
Thanks for the compliments Dottie. As for the colourful check patterned floor…we are spoiled in the Netherlands. We are so used to these things, we don’t notice it anymore.
Wishing you a very Happy New Year too.
Happy Holidays and all the best to you and Ron in the New Year, Greetje! My apologies for the absence, life gets in the way!
Loving your suit with the sneakers and tee – a wonderful look on you! I do like the reflection photo of Ron.
Happy New Year to you, dear Sheila. No need to apologize for being absent. I am so often too. As you say, life gets in the way.
Ron was very happy with your praise of his reflection photo haha.
Another great post Greetje, you look so smart in your suit. I especially love the photo of you when presented with the fairy wand (and the one in the last post of you and the martini). I like that you show all sides of you. It’s been another great year following you and the style tips you’ve shared. I so enjoy the fabulous scenes of your country. Thank you.
They say that I have a very expressive face. I used to think that I could pull a neutral face and nobody could see what I was thinking. LOL
What a mistake. You can read my face like a book with a bookmark and a table of contents haha.
Thank you for all your kind words and I hope I can keep you entertained in 2025 too.
Love the black suit with the wide leg pants. The orange top really sets it off too. I am currently in my ‘wide leg pant phase’ and probably have more than I should! 🙂
I went ‘overboard’ as well with wide leg trousers. So I will stop buying them. This suit, however, is an oldie. I bought the suit in 2017.
Happy New Year.
Absolutely love this outfit. So comfy but so modern. I love following your trendy fashion.
I find as a 60 something I tend to dress way too conservative. So thank you for going the extra mile and putting together these fabulous outfits.
I really likes those ” street style” posts. If you are ever looking for things to post I would enjoy some of these!!
Take care
And a Happy New Year to you too.
I don’t think I am dressing really trendy. But when you buy new clothes, you obviously get the newer fashion. I am careful to only pick things from trends which I know will suit me. Mind you, sometimes you have to try things again which you rejected before because shapes have changed. Like for instance from skinny trousers to wide trousers is also a shift for the tops.
If you think you dress way too conservative, you are the one who can change that in an instant.
The street style photos were fun to do, but it means I have to go to Amsterdam and walk around all day with my camera. Women tend to have less problems being featured on a blog (‘the internet’…) in a big city like Amsterdam.
Love this suit styled casually. Happy New Year!
It was a great suit as it was meant. Gave me enormously long legs with the high heels. But now I’ll get more wear out of it.
Happy New Year to you too.
I love this outfit, I think it’s very pretty and original. The design is bold and risky. The bag is adorable. Great idea.
Really love the jacket in your rejected Christmas outfit. Would look great with black or grey jeans and your metallic doc Martin’s
Yes, I think the jacket will have to be combined with something casual like jeans. I don’t have metallic doc Martin’s, but I do have silver and gold ankle boots.
I love being bold and risky, something I don’t often achieve. So thank you for this compliment.
Hope you will have a splendid 2025.
You are looking great in the photos. Ron does a very good job of taking interesting photos. And I also like your combo of comfy and well-dressed. That is my day to day type of outfit.
Hi Linda, I used to think that comfort didn’t matter as long as I looked good. With aging this is shifting a lot. Comfort is now very important. But I still want to look good. I find that less easy without high heels to tell you the truth.
Wow – love the suit. you look great in it. Happy holidays and here’s to a stylish new year!
Thanks Anne. Finally the suit will get some wear. Wishing you a happy new year too and I hope you will keep on reading my posts.
The black suit with your custom T-shirt and sneakers is a perfect mix. You look great in it. I also really like the knit sweater and necklace you have on in the photo with Sylvia. Thanks for showing us the historic pharmacy, it’s stunning.
Wishing you a happy and healthy 2025 and thanks for your blog. It’s so fun to read.
That knit sweater is a tricky one as you have to be careful not to pull a loop, which is easily done. I forgot to add a link to the original post, so here it is: https://www.nofearoffashion.com/2022/05/15/a-cream-jumper-a-city-beach-and-a-city-market/
Thank you for all your good wishes and compliments. Of course wishing you a fabulous 2025 as well. Hope you will keep on reading my posts.
Saying hello from Houston, Texas, USA. I don’t recall how I started following you but very much enjoy your casual, fun style. I am 71years old and love to dress every day, whether leaving the house or not.
Hello Nyla from Houston, I am glad you found my blog AND enjoy it. After all, what a bummer it would be if I create a post every week and nobody likes to read it? In April I will become 71 too. How times fly.
I have to say that I have succumbed to jogging trousers and a sweatshirt in the evenings. It is sooo comfortable. Never thought I would give into this. But I do dress properly every day. Until 20.00 hrs haha.
Fabulous trousers! I love them. Actually I’ve recently customiised a very favourite jacket to fit my bigger waist and it looks great with several long skirts or wide trousers, but in my London world I hardly ever have the chance to wear anything even that formal!
I loved the pharmacy, reminded me of the long lamented Culpeper House…
Good for you, adjusting your jacket. I am surprised that there is such a thing as a “London world” where formal clothing isn’t appropriate. But then again, what do I know about London life. I’d say, every change you have visiting friends, going out to lunch with girlfriends and such, wear something less casual.
I am now looking at clothes I haven’t worn for a long time (for several reasons) and try to be creative. What could I do to make them work? As I am a terrible stylist, it will take me blood, sweat and hopefully no tears haha.
