The day Kitty and I did this shoot was cold, which meant we needed an indoor place. The item I picked was this wide black midi skirt. Not really being able to style it properly for two years, I now found 9 ways to wear it. Just by shopping my own wardrobe and by putting my mind to it. I read in fashion magazines that cowboy boots are hot this year. As it so happened, my wardrobe contained these red cowboy boots. Another item I could never style. A gift from husband Ron. In 2013 he bought me a yellow summer dress and advised me to wear red boots with it. That is wrong to me. Boots are warm and for winter, while a breezy cotton summer dress is to keep you cool, ergo for summer. Although fashion magazines love to mix these things up, I can never wear them together.
The place we chose was Café Martinus, a very photogenic spot with lots of colour and quirkiness. Plus good food and cappuccinos. We weren’t sure whether they would allow us to photograph as it might annoy the other customers so Kitty did not bring her photo umbrella and extra light, which made the shoot rather challenging. What you always need for good photos is light. Still, Kitty managed quite well. And the staff didn’t mind us taking pictures at all. Quite the contrary, they were ever so sweet. We had a really nice day, Kitty and I.
Some nice pictures of the interior of Café Martinus. To give you an idea.
Below: On the left you can see a pink and purple area between the inner doors and the front doors.
Below: This is the purple and pink area near the front doors. In summer they open the doors to the street.
Below: More interior photos. I have to show them to you. Their interior is just so nice.
Quirky, right?
Below: The first outfit with the skirt was with my rose jumper. Here I am inviting other guests to enter the room up the stairs.
Below: I am becoming a bit pinky as well with all these rosy colours around me. The jumper is from the Max Mara outlet in Turin as is the skirt. The belt is new. Gift from my mum. Yes I know, so many people give me so many presents. I have no explanation for it.
Below: Had to take some pictures myself as well. Hair died here.
Below: The entrance of Café Martinus. Wearing a red turtleneck by Uniqlo (so soft and warm). Two belts and two chunky necklaces.
Below: The necklaces were made by a friend of mine.
Below: This outfit however, was meant to be with another chunky necklace. Alas it broke in the ladies room. The broken glass beads gave me a nasty cut as well. My friend Anja will try and rescue the necklace with new beads. Photo taken in my bedroom.
Below: Time for lunch. Delicious.
Below: A few steps up is this beautiful room with a lot of light.
Below: This photo gives you a good idea of the structure of the skirt. When I bought the skirt at the Max Mara outlet in Turin, this matching jacket also came home with me. The necklace is the third chunky necklace in this post, made by my friend Ina. I told her at the time I wanted a long necklace. “I don’t make long necklaces” she replied. As a favour she made me this one. The suit is perfect for such a bold item. As it is nearly Christmas, why not adorn myself with baubles?
Below: Trying to find new ways to pose.
Below: We went back to our table for coffee and a change of clothes.
Below: Caught by surprise: “WHAT??” The big bag is a recycled one. Made from uniforms of Ikea employees. Gift from Loes, my other photographer.
Below: Black turtle eck with cashmere. The belt is ancient and has little fake pockets. I like these necklaces better with this outfit.
Below: This gives you the impression I am a lady….right?
Below: A lady? This is reality: I was pulling my turtle neck while lifting the skirt. Caught in the act again.
Below: Posing with a bike belonging to the restaurant next door.
Below: Details: the cowboy boots by Sendra.
What happened in my life this week
Last week I got a comment from a reader and from a colleague: “Shouldn’t it be wardrobe instead of closet?” Did some research and yes, if you want to speak British English (and I do, because that is what I learned), you should say wardrobe. Got in touch with Selina, my editor (sounds so chic, doesn’t it?) and asked her to screen my future posts for American English and change it to British English. My teacher always said: “It doesn’t matter what you choose, but stick to one, don’t mix them”.
The photo shoot on Saturday with Loes was fun and successful. You will see it next week.
Had dinner with our neighbours a few doors down. Very nice couple. We always laugh a lot with them. They had lovely snacks before dinner, so I was munching from 18.00 till 22.30. Something I won’t be able to do when I wear the braces. Had a last scan of my teeth this week and the braces are now being made in the USA. Didn’t know that. As I have to keep them in for at least 22 hours a day, there will be no such events as with our neighbours for a year. Oh my, will I lose weight.
On Sunday Ron and I visited my mum early afternoon and stayed for dinner (we brought food). Always nice to see mum and play a game of cards while eating popcorn or crisps. Knowing that I cannot eat much and will lose weight next year, brings out the worst in me. I am eating everything under the sun.
Got a lovely compliment from a colleague who is in another department and attends our team meeting fortnightly. She said she enjoys it so much because I always make jokes which make her laugh. Yay, another mission accomplished.
Knee is still improving by the way. We are certainly not there yet, not by a long shot, but it is getting better. So pleased with that.
My friend Marjolein had to cancel our get-together on Wednesday as she fell ill. We rescheduled and I used the time to set up the christmas tree. The photos aren’t very sharp but you get the idea.
No more events this week, but sit by the fire and light candles. Dog at our feet, cat peeing against the red fabric of the christmas tree…. How cosy can it get… (I hate that cat for its nerdy defending of its territory. It is a female cat for Pete’s sake, not a male.) Anyway.. the spell was broken by this reality check.
Greetje
Many daring, different, playful looks with bright red boots and lots of accessories. I’m loving this! Great location too!
I am getting better at styling aren’t I?
It’s all about the skirt, jacket and chunky necklace! AND THOSE BOOTS!
Love the look and I love your sitting poses!
Well, at least that is 1 pose I can add to my arsenal of two poses…. Really have to do a course in posing. Those boots are probably not me as I never wear them. Terrible.
Hello Greetje, this shopping your own wardrobe sounds really convincing. Do you have any guidance how to do this? I would be interested. I wish you a really nice and peaceful Christmas and thank you very much for your great postings.
The pleasure of posting is entirely mine Elke.
Any guidance eh? Gee, it isn’t easy for me. I started with an item I have difficulty with, like the skirt. Than I try all kinds of shoes and boots to see what works. Sometimes there has to be “flesh” between the skirt and the shoes/boots, sometimes that is horrible. If no flesh should be displayed, you can try opaque tights, knee boots or leggings.
When I have etablished this (and all the shoe boxes are spread across the bedroom(…), finding the right top is easier. When you see what doesn’t work, you get an idea what might work. Adding a belt? If so, a small one, medium or broad? Tucking in the top? Or tucking in just at the front? Or better, let it hang loose? If the latter, how long should the top be?
See, how much hard work this is? That is why I like shopping where I have a capable shop assistant/stylist to help me.
Good luck and a merry Christmas to you too.
It sounds worth a try and also like hard work. I will think about it! Thank you
Brava Bellissima!!!
I adore the Max Mara jumper, have we seen this before? I don’t recognize it. Anyway, love that look with your cowboy boots the most. They’re all great outfits and rather different which is a bonus right?
I can’t believe you don’t wear those boots more, they’re seriously good 😉
Above the first photo with the Max Mara rose jumper is a link to the first time I posted it. With flared jeans.
And the boots are difficult for me as they stand out so much AND they are knee high. Had they been calf high, it would have been easier.
Beautiful set, Greetje! I love the color, the combination in the suit and, of course, the wonderful skirt with that volume and that movement that falls in love. An elegant and very feminine proposal. The proposal with the printed shirt is also fantastic. I love how you play with her and with red, combined strength and aesthetic tranquility. Magnificent accessories, magnificent jewelry and a beautiful frame for photos. I love the skirt, your way of posing and also that final post added explaining your experiences, the blog acquires personality and sanity.
It is an every evolving process, this blog of mine. I love it so much. And I am very pleased with all your compliments. I know you mean them.
I have a very similar skirt. I must get it out and start experimenting.
I would if I were you. This skirt highly surprised me. It was equally good with high heeled black boots.
Red boots, black cashmere.. updated classic! Fabulous shoot, with my favorite shot of you near the table , or course tied with the next shot which is candid and fun.
Love the backdrop , and vibe!
It is hard to dress up western boots, but you did it.
Wow, you are good !

Would not consider myself as good in styling but I gladly accept the compliment 😎.
Whoa, great styling of the midi skirt, Greetje. But I like the whole package – you IN the midi skirt, especially the shot of you pulling down your turtleneck. It’s one of my all-time favourites. Hahaha!!
About wardrobe and closet, as a Canadian, I am a hybrid, almost American, almost British. I’ve always said wardrobe in reference to all the clothes in my closet. I also use wardrobe to describe a large piece of furniture in which you can hang clothes, but it’s not a built-in closet. Closet is a built-in place to put clothes or even a room. I may be wrong but I don’t even care. Are you confused yet? Hahahaha!
I don’t think you need to worry about these things. We mostly just like looking at you. Heh. And following your humour.
Yes, I might be a tad too strict about English and American. The thing is, 65% of my readers is American. If I talk about a lift while meaning an elevator, nobody knows what I am talking about haha. I will tell my editor I want to reverse my question to screen the text for American English.
That photo of me pulling my tuttleneck is a good one eh? Couldn’t resist showing it. Anything for a laugh.
Anything for a laugh? We’re so thankful for it!!
In that case …. could you give me some tips how to wear them? With what can I style them?
Lovely boots and skirt. You styled them very successfully as well. I think my favourite is with the jacket followed closely by the red sweater. You suit the polo-neck look. I can’t wear one as it makes me look as if I do not have a neck. Beautiful jewellery also.
Actually I am not keen on turtlenecks either, although I have a long neck. Somehow I never like the look on me. It is just coincidence that I am wearing two in this post. Thank you very much for the lovely compliments.
You do suit a full skirt and turtle neck top. I know it isn’t turtle neck but my favourite is the top with the rose. Your friend makes some lovely jewellery, I would be spoiled for choice if I had to choose one.
Actually I am not too keen on turtlenecks. I only have these two and another black one. For some reason it is never my first choice.
I take it you clicked through to my post Chunky necklaces? They are indeed great, but being necklace obsessed, I have a lot (and I mean a LOT) of them. Yes I am spoiled for choice.
I’ve been very lucky with my cat as he has never peed anywhere but in his litter box! That skirt is extremely versatile and you can wear that long, full shape because of your height. That cafe has wonderfully decorative walls – perfect for a photo shoot!
When I saw all the decorations in the café I knew I had to have a shoot there. But the light was often challenging to say the least.
The fact that the skirt is so versatile amazes me. For two years I never seemed to be able to wear it.
I lost my comment : ( . I hate it when that happens.
I like Ron even more for suggesting you wear red cowboy boots with a yellow sundress.
I’ve been looking for red cowboy boots my entire life it seems. I’ve never seen any as lovely as these. I keep hoping I’ll discover some one of these days when thrifting.
If these boots are comfy (and cowboy boots usually are) I’d be wearing them every day.
That bit about your cat peeing cracked me up. Thus why I don’t have a cat. Well, that and the fact that I’m allergic.
Suzanne

It is a good thing you are not allergic to Zoë. My cat causes me headaches.
The red cowboy boots… they are difficult for me because they stand out, draw attention and are knee high. Just don’t know what to do with them. The brand is Sendra, a very well-known brand for cowboy boots. Size is 39. If I ever want to get rid of them (if ever), do you take size 39?
That skirt is pretty versatile. The bold big statement necklaces are so stunning. They really make the skirt and top look fly. Love it!
I have always been a fan of Ina’s necklaces. She sold me 15 pieces and this long one. My Christmas balls necklace.
woww, what a lovely post, lots of ideas and inspiration!. Love that you re-styled your skirt different ways! that’s brilliant! And your red boots are so fab!!
I do love the texture and shape of your suit and love even more the long necklace. Those massive bubbles are just fabulous!
And I also love the red turtleneck ensemble, such a beautiful color! and necklaces!
I think that your accessorizing totally rocks!
besos
Well thank you very much. I do love to accessorize. Especially necklaces. It is “my thing”.
Great post, loved the styling of the skirt and those necklaces…..Wow ! I read somewhere that statement necklaces were on the back burner on the trend stakes….yet I disagree and I think a big necklace adds an ‘edge’ and lifts an outfit. I am fairly tall and curvy and some of those dainty necklaces just disappear on me !!!
All outfits were nice, but the first picture of you with your foot on the chair is brilliant, love it !
Hope you have a good week and that darn cat behaves !!!
The darn cat is never going to behave I am afraid. The pose with the foot on the chair… one little improvement on my usual poses. I have to take lessons. And I agree with you on the necklaces. I don’t care what is in or out, just what suits me. I will convey that I am not lacking all fashion sense in other things.
Your cowboy boots are great! They’ve truly got extra pizzazz simply because they’re red!! You’re becoming quite impressive at shopping your closet and in this case working around a single theme and illustrating many different styling options. Those red boots put me in a Christmas mood too! 🙂
That bold silver, coral and turquoise necklace is very striking and so unique.
The long necklace is my “Christmas balls” necklace. Appropriate for this time of year right? The red cowboy boots were a pain in the butt for me as I just couldn’t style them as they were knee high. If they were half that height, I would have worn them more often.
Lol, your cat peed on the tree? What a naughty thing!
I love this skirt, Greetje, especially with the jacket and the ginormous necklace.
I use both “closet” and “wardrobe” interchangeably, both for describing the space and the collection of clothes in it. I say, just write and don’t worry about it too much.
My cat peed on the red fabric at the bottom of the tree, hiding the “foot”. She pees on anything that is strange to her in the living room or the corridor. I think she has a territory problem.
The necklace is my “Christmas balls” necklace. Very appropriate this time of year.
LOL…another it wouldn’t be Christmas moment, am I right?
That cat is so not what I hoped she would be: cuddly.
What a wonderfull boots! And of course I love the skirt! I think I love all black skirts!
Last year (or the year before? Time flies) I styled this skirt suit with pumps and a small belt. Which was not really that good. Glad I came up with this now.
I love this whole shoot Greetje, what a brilliant location, accessories and beautiful combinations. That great skirt actually looks so easy to style in this shoot. Oh, and I am so glad you finally found a good use for your gorgeous red boots. Ina’s necklaces are a winner as always.
I really should have somebody look at Ina’s necklaces. They are pretty old by now and I think there might be some more falling apart. Such a shame. Anja did find some beads which are on their way. Hopefully she can repair that one.
And I thought it was really difficult styling both the skirt and the boots.
You did a great job styling this week. I love the long necklace. Ina outdid herself!
Ina just adapted another necklace. I laughed when I saw it as it is so ostentatious. But it works very well on a “canvas” like this suit.
Loved all the outfits. The jury is still out on which was my favorite. Maybe the black turtleneck?
Anyway, it is always fun to read your posts.
I also styled the skirt with black high heeled boots and tops tucked in. I like them as well. So nice to have the choice.
At last… The most beautiful red boots ever. It took you a long time girl to find out that they match with various styles. I love, love, love the rose sweater. See you this week then. 💋
I know, I am an ungrateful bitch. And one that doesn’t really know how to style. But… didn’t do too badly this time 😊😎. See you Wednesday.
Shopping your closet is so inspiring, Greetje. All your outfits are smashing! And yes, closet is American English … although I really don’t see why it’s “wrong” to mix the two. After all, don’t we aim to be a global society? 🙂
I was really pleased with myself, I have to say. (Modesty is not my strongest point haha.) No idea why I don’t want to mix. Because it is not my native language and really wanting to do it right?
Your English is wonderful. Please do not fret about it … but I understand that urge to do it right. Just keep doing what you are doing, mixing clothes as well as words!
I will fret less, thank you. So you are one of those readers who comes back to read my reply to your comment! How wonderful. I am working on a comment system that emails my reply to the person who commented. Since the privacy regulations have tightened this is more difficult.
Thank you for such a fun post …love everything!
Thank you Evaline, so glad you like it. It is nice to see readers appreciating my efforts.
I love all of it! Beautiful!
Thank you. That is a very kind comment.
The red boots are absolutely perfect for this skirt!
And to think that I could never, really NEVER style these red cowboy boots.
Greetje, you’ve done brilliantly with the styling. And I love those red cowboy boots; they work so well with the skirt. Indoor lighting is a BEAR. Sometimes the color just isn’t right no matter what you do.
Missing you in Paris, hoping to see you in London next year! I’m keeping my eye out for that Derriere/Terrier. 😉
Glad you like it. The other variations with the skirt are less spectacular. One you already saw at the end of the previous post. In the office with my colleague, feet on the table.
Derriere/Terrier… that was a hoot !
Ok, first of all, I would have a very difficult time picking a favorite! Second, if your jewelry goes missing……love the way you paired everything with each outfit. How fun!
Accessorizing is something I am better at than styling an outfit. Although I make mistakes in that area too. Like using too dainty jewellery with a tough outfit. Never mind, I am having fun in the process. Glad you like my outfit styling.
Many daring, different, playful looks with bright red boots and lots of accessories. I’m loving this! Great location too!

And I thought it was really difficult styling both the skirt and the boots.
